CBS "Guidelines" Should Be Ignored - Proceed With Your Productions

I think many people overestiamte the value of fans films to the franchise. Do they help with the hard core fanbase? sure. However in the general public they mean nothing. You go ask 100 random people on the street about STC or STNV and you'd be lucky to find 1 that knew of the. Outside of mainstream fandom they are not known about and do nothing to keep the general public engaged in a franchise.
I don't think the value of fan works is to energize the general public. I think the value of fan works is to keep the diehard fans energized so that they will evangelize for the franchise, and to grow that diehard fanbase by increasing fan engagement with the franchise. This is key to cultivating a lasting cult following for a series after its initial popularity has waned.

Star Trek's a slightly different beast, though, as it's had a lot of spin-offs and is more of a cultural phenomenon. It would likely take decades for the franchise to die under the worst of conditions.

Looks like Spock Guy made a run for the hills...
I meet people like this all the time, they become involved on some fan page, once armed with some newly discovered knowledge, are convinced we haven't reviewed the subject and make it their mission to tell us how to run our business.
It's kind of cute when you think about it.
