Why not decompress the main shuttlebay AND use the tractor beam?
Sometimes these stories don't make any sense.

Data does exactly that.

DATA: Captain, I suggest we use the tractor beam to alter the other ship's trajectory.

PICARD: Make it so, Mister Worf.

WORF: Engaging tractor beam.

(Data looks at Riker's three pips)

DATA: The tractor beam will not be successful. I am decompressing the main shuttlebay.

My point being that he should have done that, the first time around....

and then the point of the episode would be ............?

But how could we know? They tried this thing so many times over that the episode never really started. Maybe a mystery illness struck the Enterprise, maybe we missed a fun and exciting discussion about the Prime Directive in the ready room, maybe Ashley Judd appeared for a third time in the season, this time downgraded even further to Wesley's human relations tutor. Now we will never know because they kept trying to start it right.

Note the dialouge, it doesn't say the tractor beam alone will not be successful, but rather the decompression of the main shuttlebay would be successful. To me at least it means useof the later only, not a combination of both.

But in all honesty Data can't know that, can he? All he can say from past experience is that the tractor beam will not be successful. He doesn't know if the decompression will do anything because as far as he knows, they never tried that. For all he knew at the time they could have tried the decompression a hundred times and it failed every time, he can't send a message to the next loop because in that loop he doesn't have the device.

I thought Data knew everything about everything except colloquialisms, idioms, and amusing anecdotes.

Déja vu. Didn't we already talk about this.
Really Mike S, TrekBBS has been online for over a decade, few subjects haven't been discussed repeatedly. New people constantly become members and participate in these threads for the first time, old members come up with new thoughts and points of view.

:)

But it's more that we *literally* just talked about this, since there's an active thread right now discussing the episode.

That should be easily calculable for him though. It doesn't take passed experience to know the amoutn of air in the main shuttle bay and what will happen when decompressed vs. the trajectory of the other vessel and what angle the tractor beam would alter the ship toward.

He did say he has a storage capacity of 800 quadrillion bits and a total linear computational speed of 60 trillion operations per second.

For goodness sakes, to a lesser extent of his abilities, just cite this episode: in a matter of seconds of listening to poor-quality audio, he was not only able to discern over a thousand overlapping voices, but in those same amount of seconds was able to simultaniously able to to distinguish what the conversatiosn were about and what noises were occuring, when he explanined to Picard he analysis.
