Why not decompress the main shuttlebay AND use the tractor beam?
Sometimes these stories don't make any sense.

Data does exactly that. Why not decompress the main shuttlebay AND use the tractor beam?

DATA: Captain, I suggest we use the tractor beam to alter the other ship's trajectory.
PICARD: Make it so, Mister Worf.
WORF: Engaging tractor beam.
(Data looks at Riker's three pips)
DATA: The tractor beam will not be successful. I am decompressing the main shuttlebay.

My point being that he should have done that, the first time around....
All of this has happen before ... and will happen again.Déja vu. Didn't we already talk about this.

and then the point of the episode would be ............?

Note the dialouge, it doesn't say the tractor beam alone will not be successful, but rather the decompression of the main shuttlebay would be successful. To me at least it means useof the later only, not a combination of both.
Really Mike S, TrekBBS has been online for over a decade, few subjects haven't been discussed repeatedly. New people constantly become members and participate in these threads for the first time, old members come up with new thoughts and points of view.Déja vu. Didn't we already talk about this.
I feel like I'm in that episode right now.

Oh, wait...

But in all honesty Data can't know that, can he? All he can say from past experience is that the tractor beam will not be successful. He doesn't know if the decompression will do anything because as far as he knows, they never tried that. For all he knew at the time they could have tried the decompression a hundred times and it failed every time, he can't send a message to the next loop because in that loop he doesn't have the device.
