Nathan Fillion's first show to reason season two that he was also on for season one!
Castle has a lot going on. He's trying to finish his new novel Heat Wave and trying to figure out how to fix things with Beckett. They find themselves working together to solve the murder of a man found tangled in tree limbs.
It's not a show that provokes much thought, it's just another police procedural from a basic plot point of view .... but I very much like watching these characters.
Actually, several Castle episodes in the first season had mysteries that were as strong and interesting as their character stories. Others have had strong character stories with weak mysteries. This episode was in the latter category, probably the weakest mystery they've ever done. Castle didn't deduce the murderer's identity so much as goad him into revealing himself as the killer.
I thought it was humorous enough. The mystery was indeed on the weak side, but I too like the character interactions. I'm glad to see some of the background characters getting some jibes in too. I found it interesting that the premise of the mystery had similarities to a certain Firefly episode.
I watched the first few episodes last season, but I missed the last few. Would someone mind maybe summarizing what happened at the end of the season, please?
I like the characters and dialogue a lot and sometimes the mysteries. If they lightened up on the 'writer gets into jeopardy' schtick I'd like it better. As it is, it's all too often a male version of 'perky sidekick gets in trouble but ends up solving the crime'.

There's really nothing to summarize since they all seem to be a bunch of self-contained episodes so far. The only thing of note is in the final episode of last season, Castle grabbed the case file on Beckett's mother and took it to someone he knew that pointed out everything that was mentioned in this episode.
I have to admit, I didn't give this show much hope for a Season 2 since usually everything Nathan Fillion is in only nets him one season at best. But I love this show, I love the characters. His daughter is pretty cool, his mom's a hoot, I love the Beckett/Castle dynamic. Even the other cops are fun but not overly funny.
And for the record, Beckett wasn't wearing a skirt... she was just wearing a long sweater oh yeah. How I wished she would have bent over
And that Russian accent... grrrroww... okay get this woman in something sci-fi so she can be a GBOW.
The episode was slightly weak in the mystery department, but hey at least it got Castle and Beckett back on speaking terms.
I liked last night's episode. I didn't get to see the whole thing. But it did make me laugh. And it was nice to see things turn out ok there in terms of him and Beckett.
I really loved how his daughter set him straight . That was cool. I'm wondering how they'll handle solving her mother's murder in the end though. That should be interesting to see.
Yay... just figured out how to make a spoiler tag. I wasn't sure it was the same way as it is on some other forums that I've been on.
Oh yeah duh forgot about her in the Spirit... didn't quite realize that was her. Then we need to FIND Pictures of her! Screen cap her in this eppy! LOL

The writers and actors are really starting to find a voice for this show. The things that really make it work for me are the Castle/Beckett relationship and the Castle family dynamic - particularly the latter. Nathan-as-father-figure just works, especially with the delightful young woman they cast as his daughter. That girl should have a long and vibrant career ahead of her. She lights up the screen whenever she enters. And I love the way the three generations are written. It is unbelievably refreshing to have the teenager be the sane, mature one, instead of just believing she is.
Shame on Owen! I liked him.
I had to really think to remember the mystery. I don't know why they wasted the body-in-a-tree gimmick on this episode, since this one was so clearly a re-establishment of characters and relationships for new viewers.
A couple things they need to address:
Dick and Harry need a little more attention. I have no idea what the two detectives' names are. Not to be crass, but they're basically white-wise-guy and black-wise-guy. It would be nice to see them get just a little meat in a plot or two - just to give the characters enough definition so that I will remember their names. I realize their importance lies almost completely in their commentary on the Castle/Beckett dynamic, but they're beginning to verge on Statler & Waldorf -ness.
They're going to need to quickly start dealing with Castle's notoriety vis-a-vis using him undercover. We should be reaching the point where criminals should either recognize him and remember he's working with the cops, or upon hearing his name and/or occupation remembering there's a writer working with the local police department. They should be either immediately running the other way or targeting Castle for elimination.
I know bangs/fringe are in, but I don't really think they suit Alexis. I hope they modify her hairstyle going forward to something more attractive. Her eyes are one of her strongest tools - hiding them behind her hair is not the way to go.
I'm so excited for the new season. This show was one of my surprise loves of last year - to the point that I put the closing credits whistle on my phone as my ringtone. I'm hoping the show gets popular enough that one of these days my phone will ring and someone will actually recognize the tune.
I really like this show - like the concept, like all the characters, and like the stories.
I gave last night's episode an 'above average'...but it would have been even better if not for 2 things -
1. Beckett's ridiculous Russian accent was TERRIBLE
2. I would have liked for them to have focused more on last season's ciffhanger - Beckett's mother's murder. They dealt with the issues between Castle and Beckett on that topic very well...but I would have liked to have found out more about the information he actually discovered.

Good point - I was thinking about this also. On the one hand they are talking about this wonderful news spread with 'Castle As NYPD' as the feature...and then they expect him to be able to go out in the world and not be recognized.
If they kept him on the back of a dustjacket, that's one thing...not all authors are recognized on site IRL. But once you start putting him on TV, in magazines, in the paper, etc....it's tough to buy him being able to come and go at-will without being recognized.
^ Hey, in the 80s, Detective Sonny Crockett could run around undercover with fast cars, fast boats and fast women, arrest the bad guys and continue with his same undercover name Sonny Burnett without the bad guys ever ratting him out.

Congratulations, but A, you don't need to spoiler-tag details of an episode in the review thread for that episode (since it's assumed anyone reading it expects spoilers), and B, Castle's daughter is always setting him straight, so it's not really a spoiler anyway.

Uhh, he's Hispanic. Javier Esposito, played by Jon Huertas. The other is Kevin Ryan, played by Seamus Dever.

This is New York. There are millions of people living there. They can't all pay attention to everything that goes on.
Besides, most of the people they deal with on this show aren't career criminals, so they wouldn't be in the habit of keeping track of police activities. Also, if you did commit a murder and someone starts asking you questions about it, either running the other way or shooting at the questioner is going to give away your guilt pretty quickly, and thus is not a particularly smart move.
Also, keep in mind that Castle went undercover as himself -- a crime novelist researching a book. Getting recognized actually helped him here. So it's not an unrealistic situation where a famous person can go incognito. He's disguising his intentions, but not his identity.
(I'm reminded of the Mission: Impossible TV reruns I've been Netflixing lately. If Rollin Hand is this big famous actor and Cinnamon Carter a world-renowned cover model, how come they can go undercover on a weekly basis without being recognized? That one really took the cake. Maybe it made sense when they went undercover behind the Iron Curtain or in South American dictatorships, since American media culture wasn't as global in the '60s, but it didn't make sense in their domestic capers.)

Stana Katic was born to Croatian immigrants. Maybe it was a Croatian accent she was trying to pass as Russian?
