See this bothers me though, if you're saying that the Feds knew of or indeed made contact with Cardassians prior to TNG, I would have a hard time believing they'd allow the occupation to have occured.

Might not even know about it. The Cardassian Union might be a hermit state that has very little contact with the Feds, kind of like North Korea is now.

When you look at star maps, it always confused me as to why the Federation allegedly never made contact with the Cardassians until TNG, always struck me as dumb. I would've thought they'd at least know about them, but tended to stay away from them as they knew they were an aggressive race. I mean, they only went to war with them cause the Cardassians expanded into their space right? And even then, I never got the impression it was a full scale war.

In fact they said there was some sort of Cardassian War going on before TNG started in the 2350s.

I more meant around that era, it never seemed like that way anyway. I like to think they were around during Kirk's era, but the Cardassians never bothered with the Federation cause they didn't really want to give them an excuse to come in and free races that they subjugate.
