Well if he's supposed to be like a Super Soldier... he'd probably have ammo in some of them. Flares. Maybe some paper, a small pencil or pen. Money in a couple of currencies, depending on the countries he's in. A compass. A lighter. Possibly even ciggys to trade - hey every soldier was issued a few packs of cigs in their kits, basically for their use or to trade for other things. A couple of cigarettes could get you through a guarded door, or an extra bullet or two, or a ration. Maybe even some small tools, oil and cloth for cleaning his weapon.
And yes, probably some snacks of some kind, like hard candy or chocolate or jerky.
Although I'm sure a few of those pouches contained bullets for his gun and probably some extra ammo for enemy guns and/or machine guns.

Though I really don't see a problem with him carrying one. He definitely has no philosophical objection to doing so, and it's just a sensible thing to do given the environment. Though it's not his main gimmick, so he's not going to rely on it either way.

I don't know whether someone else has already suggested this before, but is it possible that this is the outfit he wears during the War and in modern times he wears red boots and gloves and 'ski mask' type headgear with wings on them? By the way I'm really looking forward to this film. And what with Thor and Green Lantern out next year and Batman, Spider-Man and Superman all out 2012 (and the Avengers?) its looking great for superheroes on the big screen.

How are those costumes remotely the same? It looks much more like Steve's costume than it does James'.

Your link is broken. I assume it was a picture of the Ultimate Universe Captain America? Different Cap than the one in the Marvel Universe. ( And not one I care for)

It's also kind of a strange complaint given that the Marvel movies have already incorporated several ideas from the Ultimate universe, most notably the Ultimate Nick Fury...

The average moviegoer doesn't know that, especially if they casually walk past a comic rack and see Cap toting a hand gun.
