If this film becomes popular with the masses, there is destined to be a group of people who will point to that fact alone as the reason they think the film is a failure.

Heaven forbid Star Trek becoming popular with the "average person" (again).

Indeed.
Past failures for which almost all the same people were responsible, all of who have been fired and have nothing to do with the new movie.

But they haven't learned their lesson. Star Trek IS NOT COOL. It doesn't matter if it's popular. Star Trek at it's best is thought provoking and intellectually challenging. If the original fall short by today's standard, that's a product of our increase sophistication NOT of Star Trek (which is responsible for some of that sophistication). When ST becomes mass entertainment, that's a sign of FAILURE because mass entertainment is about surrendering to the lowest common denominator. We should be weeping at ST's degradation, not celebrating it.

That approach, with respect, is idiotic as it presumes that the new picture is a pile of shite just because Paramount wants a bigger audience. That doesn't have to be so. Dark Knight wasn't campy or silly, despite appealing to a wider audience. Casino Royale wasn't full of silly jokes and nonsense despite looking for a new audience. I think that we need to be patient and see what comes our way. Then we can judge.

I was very annoyed at JJA telling us repeatedly that this was a movie for non-fans, but you will note that in recent times the makers have changed their tune and said its for both so lets make our minds up when we see it. If it keeps to the core values of Trek, with intelligence and emotion, then theres not reason for it to be a failure....and there's also no reason why it can't still be popular with the masses. Not all cinemagoers are of the American Idol moron generation you know.
