I have a theroy why jj has changed the canon .its because that failed show enterprise screwed up our beloved trek history ,just joking . As much as i'm a fan of tos up to yoyager trek canon is all over the place , but at the end of it you enjoy watching what ever trek you enjoy and not go, oh that's not canon ,yes we do look deeper into the show after it and pick it to bits , and how much canon affects our trek .My point is i love my tos but i'm willing to watch the new movie as newer vision of gene's trek .

Finally another sane person!!!

I'm of the opinion that, in order in increase ticket sales, Jewel Staite should be cloned and have a copy sent to every theater, offering an after-movie bukkake party for all who attend.

Not the best grammer, but still about the most brilliant post I've read here since this all started.

Of course, canon is dead. It had to die sometime and rather as you say, it just got incredibly jumbled over the many 'new' Star Trek productions. Like anything in the universe, things fall into entropy. They get more and more messed. That's great when you're moss or an exploding star, but for any human endeavor it's always the sign of the coming end.

Trekkies have been complaining that 'canon' is hopelessly screwed since VOY at least. Thus, I find it  worthy that people cry about canon for the new Trek film. Especially since all the productions have been terrifically 'consistent' with the setting, but fast and lose with it's history and details. Enterprise changed loads of facts. Some films did. The list goes on. Time travel alone has screwed any consistent history in Trek so badly Trekkies today universally dislike time travel storys!

And it's all for naught. The new film looks wonderful. And that's all it needs to be.

I'm just gonna say now that this will probably be the most unTrek movie out of them all.

And thats a good thing. By ignoring canon when it suits them, the production team will be able to make a movie that would be able to appeal to a wider audience.

When the movie comes out, whether its good or bad (hoping for good here), it won't be just a Trek movie. It will be a sci fi movie.

Sorry about the grammer ,If they story is good and it can be enjoyed , it will not ruin my tos as i can watch it anytime and enjoy it, i'm sure gene would be first to say canon is not important, but the story you are telling .

Of course story comes first, but it isn't that simple. You're dealing with a franchise that has 40+ years of history, and if someone doesn't really care if the story fits into what has been established, why do they have to tell that particular story in someone else's sandbox?

"Story is more important than canon" is a strawman; no one argues for crappy stories that are merely consistent with what came before. Rather a lot of fans who, let's just say as an example, love the original Enterprise wonder why someone would make something called Star Trek with the original Enterprise in it and not be a big enough fan of the design to retain more of its styling.

^I like the "new" Enterprise, it's my opinion. You can't make anyone happy, and I think they did a good job of it. I think more people should wait to see it in motion on screen before passing judgement.

Opinions over something like artistic direction are the most pure form of opinion; you're entitled to yours but I'm not going to sit here and say they must not be "real fans" because they butchered "my" starship.

Should have done a full-on reboot.

Throw all the canon baggage out and start again.

Keep the Enterprise, Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Starfleet, Strange new worlds etc, and throw everything else out.

Internet would have imploded, and the film would have probably bombed under a wave of nerd anger - but that would have been my way. No grey area. Just reboot the fucking thing. Start over.

That said, I'm still enthused about this project. I'm a Star Trek fan. Paint Star Trek on the side of a turd and I'll get excited. :D

I disagree. It's fiction. It doesn't need to be rebooted even if everything looked different.

Well said Buck......:techman:

And considering nobody way back in the making of TOS had any idea the show would have lasted so long, and spawned so many shows and become such cult following, its a miracles that the shows have managed to keep so much cohesiveness concerning canon across the entire franchise.
