Can you tie a tie?

Wore a tie each day of the week through high school (damned dress codes), and occasionally at work, nowadays ... generally depending on if clients are coming in, or if I've got meetings to attend.

Can't say they've ever bothered me. :)

When I was a girl at high-school there was a strict uniform code and we had to wear hat, gloves and a tie. I remember my mother teaching me how to tie my tie in the weeks before I started high school.

After leaving high school I never wore a tie again. I know that a few times I tied my husband (now ex-husband)'s tie when he got dressed up for a funeral or wedding. However it has been more than 25 years since I have tied a tie at all and I don't think I actually remember how to do it.

Are there any people here who have never worn a tie and therefore not learnt how to tie one, or have forgotten how to tie one? And who here still wears a tie on a regular basis?

Last time I wore one was when I got married. I know how to tie one, but I refuse to wear them.

I wear a tie about a dozen times a year. I can tie a full windsor without much difficulty, but getting the length right is really tough.

Of course i can.. learned it from my dad ages ago as well as tying my shoes, shaving and standard home improvement stuff.

Oh yes, definitely. :D

Count me in!

Only: I won't burn my musical christmas ties!!!! They're just too much fun; both ugly (in any way you look at it) and obnoxious (LOUD)!

Maybe, just maybe, they should be the first ones on the bonfire ;)
You can keep the musical socks though :)
But... but... I only use them as an ironic comment on the total uselessness and ugliness of ALL ties! -Mo-om I need to keep them!

I have to wear one for work on most days, so I've learned how to tie them...

The best part of the tie is getting to take it off at the end of the day.

I can tie a tie, although I actually don't know the name of the knot. I've worn it to school uniform parties. It was fun, because I never did have an opportunity to wear a school uniform.

I learned how to tie a tie from my dad, as well, only to find out a few years later that he does it completely wrong.

^ Even Fred Flintstone in your av can tie a tie. Any man who can't belongs beyond the Stone Age, back in some kind of primordial soup. :p :D

Today's effort, since I have a snap handy:

I kind of agree. If you're a man older than 18 and you can't tie a tie, well, then you've failed at modern Western civilization.

I wore a tie to work until 1992. Now I just put one on for formal occasions and I always have to think about how to do it. It just doesn't seem natural any more.

I don't know. If you never have reason to wear a tie, there's no reason to remember how to do it. I've seriously only worn a tie twice in the last 3 years, and both times were for a Halloween costume.

The way my dad ties a tie works all right. I mean, it looks fine, but his knot is almost impossible to undo.

You know what's really nice? A girl who knows how to do a tie up "in reverse" i.e. able to do your tie up for you while you're wearing it. For some reason I find it the absolutest sweetest cutest thing when a girl does that for me. Makes me want to kiss them right there and then.

(if I could find a girl who could do a bow-tie up on me, I'd probably drop onto one knee and propose right there!)

This reminds me: the first time I had to tie a tie for myself was when I was about 6 years old. Up to then, dad did my tie up for me in the morning before school and whenever I had to take one off at school for games or whatever, I'd undo it enough to slip it over my head without it coming fully undone. Trouble is, this time I undid it a bit too much and had to redo the tie after we went swimming. Didn't have a clue what I was doing and the knot looked horrid. In the middle of the next class, my teacher actually told me to take it off and redo it properly. I remember thinking "I have NO idea how to do this and now I'm going to look a complete idiot in front of everyone in class".

Somehow, through sheer fluke, I managed to create an approximate facsimilie of a halfway-acceptable knot. But believe me, I learnt how to do a tie up properly after that close shave! :D
