We had some great Robotech discussion boards back on AOL in the mid-90's, before Robotech.com came along. There were definitely Macross purists, but we had more fun arguing between the Robotech TV purists and the McKinney fans and the comic books. Ahh, those were the days.
I don't really get all the hate towards the show itself. I agree that Harmony Gold should lighten up on the whole "we own everything Macross" attitude, but really, that has no reflection on the show itself. It was revolutionary for its time. At the same time that GI Joe had parachutes coming out of every airplane that was shot down, Robotech killed off background pilots, main pilots, and 70% of the Earth! Take THAT, Snake Eyes! Okay, so the anime was rewritten and protoculture was changed from the first society to an energy source. So what? Macross DYRL is a change from the Macross TV series too. Macross 7 shows flashbacks of Macross TV events that didn't happen in DYRL, but makes them look like DYRL! I don't see why the Robotech timeline can't just be another parallel Macross timeline. It's not like you can't get legal subtitled versions of all three shows now. So really, what's the harm in letting Robotech fans actually enjoy it? (No offense meant to
you,

Personally, the only thing I really didn't like from Robotech was Robotech: The Movie, and there's nothing from Macross that I didn't like (although I am a little lukewarm towards Macross II and Macross Zero). The all live happily together in my little world and I'm a fan of all of them, and I welcome all fans of all of them as well. Just leave the hate at the door, please!
