Can anyone direct me to a good Robotech forum?

Also, the length of the SDF-01 is 1210 meters. I don't think that's ever been in true contention, so I'm not surprised your thread lasted all of 15 posts?

Mark

The problem is that the visuals and dialogue don't support that figure. They indicate a much larger ship.

If this were the Trek Tech forum, we'd have several pages of people using reason and logic (and the occasional WAG) to try to suss out a better figure, but on the RT fora, people don't seem to want to engage in either reason OR logic. They just quote the "official" figure and leave it at that.

I'm used to a higher caliber of debate from all the time spent here...guess I'm spoiled...:)

meh, just the different way fandom think. Robotech/Macross fandom really has never been overly hung up on the details, in my experience. Trek fans could take a lesson from that: don't get hung on the details, and just enjoy the ride.

I don't know of a good Robotech message board. The general membership of the forums of Robotech.com seem to complain and whine in an even more juvenile fashion than the worst of this message board's members.

True.

Didn't used to be that way though. I was one of the earliest members on that site, and in the beginning it was fun, it was just people talking Robotech and being friendly. But in the last few years it's just been utter shite. I left there a couple years back.

There's also the common "...but it's animation " attitude a lot of people have too though. They aren't willing to have an intelligent discussion about a "cartoon" show, even if the show is sufficiently complex and deep enough to be enjoyed by adults like many Japanese animated shows are.

Oh, I've seen in depth and intelligent discussions. But on my experience have been that Macross fandom-- and Robotech as well-- trends towards talking about the characters or the story, the mecha is just eye candy.

Actually I've been enjoying the discussion over at Macross world. I do think that people need to understand that there are a lot of people angry at Harmony Gold for their business practices. Its inexcusable to think that we cant Frontier over here. And that we cant get a decent DYRL dvd. Macross is one ot the great anime franchises nd the west should be able to partake of it.

I am a lurker but let me tell you here I stand on the whole Macross, Robotech fight. I watched Robotech the day it came out. My mom and I were addicted to it. It became my favorite anime. But I knew that it was greatly changed from the original.A year later when I was 13 I had Japanese friends who showed me a picture book of Macross Love do you remember. I actually got a copy of that movie from a Japanese toy store somewhere in LA. It was not translated but I watched that thing 1000's of times.

Year's later I finally watched the Macross t.v. show. I saw that the characters in Macross are more mature and storyline is better. The idea of the Protoculture was a great civilization who created the Zentraedi but also helped engineer us was interesting. We really were brothers with the Zentran. And the idea that the Macross was an ordinary Supervision army gunship instead of the pride of the fleet was cool. Macross was outgunned and outclassed by everything. So I fell in love with the Macross a second time. I even watched it with my mom who believed it was an allegory about post WW2 japan. I dont know if I believed that but its an interesting idea.

I would suggest to Darkwing to try to understand the reactions of hardcore Macross fans. And please do watch both DYRL and Macross Frontier ( skip Macross 7 LOL) Because they are both important parts of the puzzle and show why Macross is a huge franchise. it is a pity a I have to watch both on You tube or bootleg when I would love to spend money on them, and support the companies that made them. Its also a shame I cant get the Macross video games which I heard were extra cool.

As for the size of the Macross I always believed the official number a mile long. But I guess it is 1200 meters. Yes It would be impossible to get a city the size of Macross city inside that. I always felt the real measurements were about the size of B5. But this is just my personal Fannon.

So don't doubt get to discouraged that you are a Robotech fan. A lot of people over at Macross world have been personally hurt by Harmony Gold and that's the reason for the severe reaction you are getting. I personally feel that Macek intended to bring Macross over whole and complete. But this was 1985 and the anime craze of the 90's had not hit yet. I think Robotech gave a lot people there first taste of anime ( not me mine was Star Blazers:)) So Robotech has to be commended for that. But Harmony Gold since the 2000's has been a waging a full scale war against Macross fans. And I think the Yune brothers are to blame for a lot of it.

So that's my lurker take on the whole situation. I always tell people this. I dated Robotech, but I married Macross. I hope to keep reading that discussion over at Macross world.

I love everything about Robotech/Macross. I'm not a purist who believes something has to be a certain way or it isnt real. As long as the concept is close to the original then I am happy.

Minmay is annoying. The creepy thing was the bit about her kissing and falling for her cousin Kyle. The Zentradi weren't repulsed by her kissing. They were repulsed that it was incest! :) I figured they would have at least made him a really good friend of the family.

I know Macross is a fan fave but I personally love the 3rd Gen (Mospeda) episodes.
The Invid totally owned the Zentradi, The Masters, and the humans. Who wouldn't love to have their very own Cyclone? Now that is one bad a$$ mecha!

Honestly, I wish Harmony would just reboot the franchise with new animation; drop the BS about Macross, they're just in the wrong there and being pigheaded. I love Robotech, but come one people it's fun for the camp value, even when I was watching it growing up I found it hard to take seriously beyond watching F-14s transform into ass kicking Robots.

Now if you ever get a chance and a good comic shop, check out the short lived Robotech comic: Robotech: Mordecia. It's about a crazy cult, who's leader builds a dupilicate of the SDF-1-- with a very gothic church looking interior whose computer is bonded with a insane clone of the cult leader, sets out for the Andromeda galaxy with the plan to populate that's Galaxy's planets with clones of his selected "superior" humans and ends up waking up beings who are made of protoculture with a hate of organic life as we know it. Sounds odd and crazy, it only lasted a handful of issues but it was a good solid Robotech story that sort of explained the inconsistencies between the shows implied that the SDF-1 and Zor may have done more than just spark off a planetary war.

Look, I get it that people don't like HG's business practices. I really do.

But that doesn't excuse Seto and his clique of elitist...well, I won't use the word I'd really LIKE to use and say "jerks".

Mentioning even a single word related to Robotech and they act like it was High Mass at St. Peter's Basilica and you just jumped up and yelled "All praise Satan!" It's that bad.

I went over there hoping to find a few tech facts, even if I had to do it indirectly and interpolate it a bit. Now that I seem to have gotten all I'm going to be able to get, why the H*ll should I go back and be treated that way?

I've told them several times that their rabid Robotech bashing is costing them potential fans of the "pure" Macross, but they don't seem to get that. Their attidude seems to be "if you still like Robotech, we don't WANT you around".

And they continue to whine about how badly THEY'RE treated by HG and Robotech sites in general...the level of hypocracy is UNREAL...

Ah, yes, there is that whole deal about Harmony Gold blocking the Macross franchise here in the US. I acknowledge this as a perfectly good reason to hate the company, myself (not the product, Robotech, mind you). After all I'd love to own Do You Remember Love, Frontier, and Zero pretty bad, but I have to stick to my digital copies.

Well if you don't mind not having subtitles or a english dub, you can always buy the blu-ray version from Amazon Japan and port them into the US

Then I'd have to buy a Blu-Ray player too though, so there'd be some added expense in addion to the extortion of import fees and rip-off level episode counts per disc. Plus I only know about 50 words of Japanese with no grasp of the complex vocabulary so watching things raw usually leads to confusion. Either that or a comedy routine if I watch it with my brother as we tend to MST3K it. :p

There was a rumor running around a while back about a English Sub-title ending up on future Macross Frontier releases, and DYRL for release in English speaking markets outside the US. Not heard anything else about since Winter '08

I have a faint memory of, years ago, watching a copy of a copy of a copy... of some sort of Robotech movie where the male and female leads end up on a scorched planet Earth, like the oceans are mostly boiled off and stuff like that. I remember they were trying to eat the mutated fish and it was really bad or something.

Is that a Macross movie of some sorts or am I mixing memories?

Yes thats Macross Love do you remember. Misa and Hikaru end up on a destroyed earth and find a Protoculture city.

I haven't watched Robotech for a long time and in fact haven't finished any of the individual "series" except for Macross but I still want to go back and watch the "Southern Cross" series and finish off "New Generation". I've read some of "The Sentinels" books and "End of the Circle" and was very disappointed that "The Sentinels" was never completed beyond the "pilot" that they cobbled together from the first few episodes of that planned/failed series. I have yet to watch "The Shadow Chronicles" either based on the fact that I haven't finished the "New Generation" series and some disappointment that they are moving onward with an alternative storyline instead of going back and working more on "The Sentinels" storyline as IMHO they should have. I loved "Macross Saga" fondly and Robotech was my first foray into anime -courtesy of a friend of mine.

Personal Robotech ratings:

Macross Saga = * * * * *
Southern Cross = * * Weakest of the series, sort of forgettable, feels out of place.
New Generation = * * * Not as good as Macross, but a solid story in it's own right, I'd be interested in seeing the original unedited anime.
