Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (trailer)

I'm not trying to troll here, I'm genuinely interested. I've never played a Call of Duty game so I'm wondering what it is that makes everyone gush so much. What does this series do so much better than every other FPS out there? Please, sell me.
Well, IMO, the Call of Duty games (at least Infinity Ward's entries) don't offer particularly revolutionary FPS mechanics, but the intensity and the atmosphere are beyond reproach. Call of Duty 4 was just so much fun to play; the story itself was a little over-the-top, but the production is very slick and the action is top notch. I also think that the Call of Duty games have the best control scheme of all console FPS games, but that's a matter of opinion I suppose.
IMO it feels like playing a movie.
they're extremely immersive and as close to being in a war as you can get without being in a war or at the very least a military exercise.
one of the key selling points on its immersion is that the series may take you from one character to another, but they never take you out of character, it's all FP view.
the WWII entries are/were also closely modelled on real events, so that helped too...

Basically, yeah. IW have become the masters of scripted events.
COD by IW (and even Treyarch, to some degree, in W@W) isn't revolutionary at all in terms of the FPS genre.
What it does is take every element of the genre and elevate it to the highest imaginable quality. The shooting mechanics and control scheme are simply the best out there, the presentation is top-notch, the multiplayer is deep and rewarding and never boring or tedious ... the single player stories are epic and character driven and brilliantly well-paced and varied (COD4 much more than W@W), etc. etc.
All of this and team trash-talking too!
Seriously, just when you think you're done with multiplayer, that its "same ol', same ol' " you see someone do something you've never considered-and it changes things for you, keeps you playing. I've got days(not hours, 24-hour days) in on the last two iterations-and I plan to put in an hour or two tonight. At heart, it challenges in ways few FPS games do-either personally or from a teamwork viewpoint. Also, the "arcade" play of the Halo franchise is noticeably absent. It's got a realistic feel and when you aim you don't have to worry about people walking thru your shots-if you hit them accurately they go down. When combined with the multitude of variations you can bring to your weapon schemes, COD gives depth beyond any of its competitors. IMO.

ha ha ha along with the stg. It is ridiculous that you can spray and pray me with a mp40. While it takes 3 carefully placed shots on a Arikska to kill you. You know a game is horribly unblanaced when everybody runs around with the same gun.

Everybody does? Oh, you mean in the Halo-er, sorry, Core mode! I've heard that. It's why I play Hardcore.

Really, only IW could do this because they're making the biggest (console) game ever. Any other company trying to raise any sort of moral or political message would have balked and gone the safe route.
The only real disappointment is that you can skip this section. I understand it's hard to play, but that's the point. Oh well.

If it's really important to you, you probably shouldn't watch it. I'm sure experiencing it yourself for the first time will be much more shocking.
Hah, yeah. Although this is just some dude stealing the game somehow and uploading it. It's funny, because you can see him reflected on the TV... so I wonder if they can find him.
