Spoilers Building to a 'mega crossover'?

The latest season of Discovery is set a millenia after any Trek we've ever known. There already elements form Picard (the Qowat Milat,, uniform) appearing.

A major theme occuring through the season is the Temporal War. We know that it spanned centuries, and time travel technology was outlawed afterward. The Picard teaser hints at more timey-wimey.

We have Strange New Worlds in the 23rd Century, Discovery in the 32nd Century, Lower Decks and Prodigy in the 24th Century, Picard about 20 years later on the cusp of the 25th Century - could they be building to a mega-crossover event?

Lower Decks and Prodigy are animated so they might have to be separate, but on screen Trek never attempted this beyond three guest characters (and Trials and Tribble-Ations) Another complication is that shows film in different cities (Picard in California, the rest up in Canada) but television and film have changed dramatically since Enterprise ended back in 2005. We have Marvel's Avengers, The Defenders; DC's Justice League. Even Doctor Who crossed with it's two spin offs in the Series 4 finale.

Would you like to see this? If not in a movie then in a Paramount+ mini series (I'd say 60th Anniversary but that's over 5 years away!) - maybe it could be a chance for other Trek vets to reappear?

I suspect that any "timey-wimey" that goes on in season 2 of Picard will be the result of
Q taking Picard on a tour of his life. At least, that's my speculation based on the teaser.

And at the moment I don't see anything that suggests all the shows are building to some sort of Avengers style crossover. As for would such a thing even be desirable, eh not really. Maybe if this were like the nineties where we had three series set in the same time period (TNG movies, DS9 and Voyager) but even then, rather than some sort of ultimate crossover where everyone tag-teams to save the day, I'd rather it be handled the way many of the novel crossovers are done, in that we get one ultimate mega event and follow the individual ships as they deal with aspects of this event. IE, the miniseries The Fall begins with the assassination of the Federation President while attending the ceremony for completion of the new DS9 station, then we follow the Enterprise E getting into trouble at Cardassia in which Garak gets involved and a piece of the conspiracy to assassinate the Federation President is revealed. Then Ezri Dax's ship must apprehend Dr. Bashir as he goes against the interim Federation President's unethical orders. Then, believing something rotten is going on on Earth and the Federation government, the Starfleet Chief of Staff recalls the Titan to Earth to promote Riker to Admiral so that he can do some digging into the matter. Finally, Riker's investigation combined with evidence Picard has uncovered on a separate matter, combined further with testimony provided by Garak reveal the Federation's interim President had in fact orchestrated the previous President's assassination so that he could take over the Federation for his own evil deeds.

Certainly a lot more preferable then some sort of event with profound implications to time and space itself resulting in Disco showing up from the 32nd century, the Cerritos from 2380s, La Sirena from 2390s, whatever the ship from Prodigy is, Pike era Enterprise, Georgiou with the Section 31 series cast along with, I don't know, the Enterprise NX-01 and the Kelvin timeline Enterprise A to all work together and save the day and all time and space.

Sir Patrick has said repeatedly that one of his favorite ideas for Trek is for all the captains from all eras/shows to come together and unite for a fight. Given the fact that he's kinda involved with Trek at the moment... I wouldn't rule something like this out. ;)

This sounds fun - each episode acting like a part of a jigsaw puzzle being a part of a bigger story And of coruse, it would be able to include the animated series without much complication

Very interesting! Plus he is an EP now on his show

Also worth mentioning, al Ultimate Crossover was an idea pitched by Brent Spiner for an eleventh movie, in which all the Captains team up to defeat all their respective enemies. Paramount abandoned the idea after Nemesis bombed.

Yup, that's where Sir Patrick got the idea from. Both he and Spiner were very much into it, and he recently repeated the idea in an interview and remarked that he always liked it, so it still seems to be on his mind.

Some of the shows are highly serialized, so the options for a crossover would be an Avengers-style buildup over a season, or having it as a three-episode/-hour movie special that tells the whole story from start to finish.
Either way, it would work best as a TV/streaming event rather than a cinemovie.

Personally, I don't feel a need for a mega-crossover.
Rather, I'd like to see references (e.g. USS Boimler in Disco) the way we've seen already (reunification and Qowat Milat in Disco).
The only "big" crossover that could really be interesting is seeing the USS Shenzhou and Discovery in the Kelvin timeline, and experience what their lives are like in a world of where the Klingon War of 2256-57 does not occur.

when you take into account various stuff mentioned in this thread it feels like it might building toward that.. maybe Trek XIV will feature a variety of characters from all eras ..basically BBK The Movie (not necessarily with Shatner - and if was in some capacity/not lead would be deaged/deepfaked). thatd be one way of making it an event

It's inevitable they'll do a Defenders/Crisis on Infinite Earths mega crossover miniseries at some point. And it'll be ultra contrived but hopefully a lot of fun.

Would anyone outside the die-hards pay to see a movie starring any of the Paramount+ Trek characters when they already pay a monthly subscription to see them? Trek is way more niche than it was in the 90's when the TNG cast transitioned to the big screen. As a Long Treks I'm on board. As a cinematic movie it's doomed to fail.

Nemesis follow-up
An eleventh Star Trek film was initially planned during production on the tenth film, Star Trek Nemesis. Nemesis co-writers John Logan and Brent Spiner intended to follow that film with a "crossover" sequel. After Nemesis failed financially, however, this plan was abandoned. [4] Patrick Stewart clarified that the film was intended to be the fifth and final TNG film. He also commented, "It was a very exciting idea for a screenplay. It would have been a real farewell to Next Generation, but it would have involved other historic aspects of Star Trek as well." [5] Spiner himself explained, "“One of the ideas that John Logan and I had about what the next film would have been was a Justice League of Star Trek. Something would bring all the great Star Trek villains together, from Khan to Shinzon, and Picard is the only person who could stop them and he actually has to go through time and pluck out the people he needs to help him. He goes back to the moment before Data blows up and takes him back to get Kirk and Spock, and go even further back and get Scott Bakula's character, Archer. The problem with that more than anything is cost – how do you pay for that?" [6]

The bad reception and dismal performance of Nemesis at the box-office, conclusively put an end to all notions of doing a Next Generation follow-up.

Star Trek: The Avengers
A similar film concept (reported in SFX magazine) was devised by Brannon Braga and likened by him to an Avengers story, because it took a "superhero teamup" approach. (SFX: The A-Z of Star Trek, p. 107; [7]) The story would have collected Starfleet's greatest minds to defeat a terrible threat. ("In Conversation: Rick Berman and Brannon Braga", ENT Season 1 Blu-ray special features; SFX: The A-Z of Star Trek, p. 107; [8])

Braga recalled this concept in a discussion with Rick Berman on 12 December 2012. ("In Conversation: Rick Berman and Brannon Braga", ENT Season 1 Blu-ray special features) "We were gonna get Picard, Data, Odo, the holographic Doctor... all the Star Trek characters on one ship, like a think tank," commented Braga. He went on to say, "It was like Star Trek: The Avengers." ("In Conversation: Rick Berman and Brannon Braga", ENT Season 1 Blu-ray special features; SFX: The A-Z of Star Trek, p. 107; [9]) Braga couldn't recall at what stage they had discussed the film idea, and Berman couldn't remember having spoken about it at all, but they both agreed that it was still "a good idea." Berman also suggested, "You might as well throw Kirk in there as well." ("In Conversation: Rick Berman and Brannon Braga", ENT Season 1 Blu-ray special features)

I really don't want to see something like this happen. It's convoluted fanwankery. I'm happy to see small crossovers and callbacks when it makes sense for the plot. But there's no story that you could create for a giant everything-crossover that would make it seem like anything but a stunt.

The vast majority of things discussed on this site are convoluted fanwankery, haha.

Such an idea will ultimately come down to the execution. Good execution fixes a lot of things. The MCU is actually flimsy when you think about it but it almost doesn't matter because it's executed at least pretty well most of the time.

The MCU is a mixed bag at best, and Star Trek doesn't need to follow that model. MCU worked because it just kept moving on despite missteps and poor performances. Star Trek is not at this point as they second guess everything.

Good execution of the MCU does not change the fact that I find it convoluted and tiresome and don't want it any where near a franchise I actually like.

The MCU was built from the beginning with the possibility of a mega-crossover in mind. It comes from the source material. Star Trek is, if anything, the opposite. The producers have long gone out of their way to keep the shows separate. TNG was set a century after TOS. Voyager was thrown off into a distant part of the galaxy. Enterprise was set a century before TOS. Discovery is now almost 1000 years into the future.

Sure, it could be done, but the universe isn't built for it.
