Buffy Animated

EJA

Fleet Captain
All these years later, I'm still quite disappointed that the cartoon spin-off of BtVS never got going. It would've been really interesting to see that. But alas, it will never be. Is anyone else as pissed as I am about this?

After seeing the bits of the pilot that were on youtube...yes. It looked like fun. Even not having Sarah voice Buffy was acceptable. It's too bad that it never was aired.

What were the exact reasons it was never produced though? I heard one of the reasons was it was considered too adult to air on a children's network. WTF??!! Whoever thought that has obviously never seen the massively successful Batman: The Animated Series, which was frequently dark and moody and could even be a little bit scary on occasion (Just watch the feature-length movie Mask of the Phantasm, or the episode were Ra's Al Ghul goes in search of an ancient Egyptian queen). Hell, the new series of Doctor Who is marketed as a family show, and that's featured more than its fair share of frightening moments.

They had problems finding a network that would take it. Here's a quote from Joss that is taken from a Q&A he did with the Hollywood Reporter back in 2003.

We just couldn't find a home for (it). We had a great animation director, great visuals, six or seven hilarious scripts from our own staff—and nobody wanted it. I was completely baffled. I felt like I was sitting there with bags of money and nobody would take them from me. It was a question of people either not wanting it or not being able to put up the money because it was not a cheap show. One thing I was very hard-line about was, I didn't want people to see it if it looked like crap. I wanted it to be on a level with Animaniacs or Batman: The Animated Series. And that's a little pricier. But I just don't think it's worth doing unless it's beautiful to look at as well as fun.[3]

^Truly tragic. :(

I'd still love to see the show get made one day, but I strongly doubt it ever will, which makes me sad.

I've always felt that had the cartoon been made, it would've been nice for the actresses on it, such as Alyson Hannigan and Charisma Carpenter, to be able to watch it with their kids.

My one fan boy wish is to see a "Fray" movie starring Natalie Portman...since she's the basis used to created Mekala with. It'll never happen, but I can dream.

@Mr. Light...it's in the back of the TPB. Karl Moline says that Natalie was a basis for Fray's model. Obviously she turned out in the final product to look much differently but there is a really cool comparison pic that he provided.

I was more impressed by that clip this time than the first time that I saw it, which was several months ago. With some minor modifications, the show could have been great. I think that it was a little too over-the-top in terms of things like 30-foot leaps and making casual quips while looking into a dragon's maw. Not sure about the lead actress, either, but with a little work on the comic timing side she probably would have been really good.
As regards marketing the series, a show with a title like "Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Animated Series" was probably always going to be a hard sell. It was intended to be like its parent show but with the angsty bits cut out or removed, so a snappier title might have been better.

It was certainly a prospect that captured the imagination.
