Bryan Fuller Stepping Back From Showrunner Role on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’

I wonder how much the "new" Discovery will resemble Fuller's Discovery? Considering the lack of news, I wonder if Fuller leaving didn't have more to do with creative differences between him and CBS?

Eh. They have a fixed airing-date. It's simply too late by now to change the basic concept.

What thex DO need to do is design and get approval for every. fucking. single. prop. Unlike Fullers previous shows where they could just grab background props they liked, this is a science fiction show, and every single little detail, from the clothing to the damn vase with an alien flower in the background needs to be designed from scratch. Something that simply is not possible while working on two other shows as well.

And considering how people complained about theit half-assed cgi teaser, I'm pretty sure they're never going to show us unfinished work again.

I guess the next thing we will hear is when the main character will be cast, and then a full cast list. I don't think we will get to see the new ship design (or, literally anything, like the corridor sets) until after filming will already have begun and shortly before the show airs.

Many shows are messes behind the scenes, I tend to think Discovery will be fine.

I was bummed to hear about Fuller leaving. I saw him at a panel at San Diego Comic Con this year and was impressed with what he had to say about the state of the world and how he hoped that things would get better. I definitely had s level of confidence in Discovery with Fuller as the show runner. I am still hoping the show will be good.

Star Trek TV series: Bryan Fuller says he won't be involved

When the shocking news broke that Bryan Fuller was stepping down as showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery, some fans held out hope that by staying on as an executive producer the Hannibal writer-producer would remain actively involved in the production.

But that’s not how showrunner changes tend to really work behind the scenes (usually when you’re out, you’re out), and now Fuller himself is confirming that, yup, he’s out.

“I’m not involved in production, or postproduction, so I can only give them the material I’ve given them and hope that it is helpful for them,” Fuller tells Newsweek in a new interview. “I’m curious to see what they do with it.”

Yup, that's what a lot of us figured from the initial press release announcing his departure. There are pages and pages of people arguing it wasn't the case but here we are, straight from the horses mouth.

Honestly, as big of a Trek fan as I am, there is simply other stuff I'm more looking forward to than Discovery. Maybe my anticipation will amp up the closer we get, but right now? There's nothing that has me anticipating it. Nothing that has hooked me thus far.

With Fuller gone, who knows if it is even centering on a young female Lt. Commander anymore?

The main thing I'm worried about is whether it will remain as part of the original universe, but I expect everything will continue as it has been.

There's been a lot of good news to go with the few cons, but this is so far the first thing from behind the scenes to give me pause. I can certainly buy the idea that a huge trek fan wanted to be involved with the new show, but just had too much to do with his other shows. Fine. I still seems as if CBS may have disliked his slow handling of the show and influenced him out of the loop.

I was listening to the excellent if sporadic Transporter Room 3 podcast, and the hosts suggested that the reason for Fuller's departure is because CBS is still "your grandfather's network," meaning it could be they didn't agree with Fuller on elements they may have considered "edgy" or "out there," like the gay character and, if I'm not mistaken, a rumored Muslim character.

I tend to think this is the reason Fuller left and/or was booted. Supergirl has become a show that doesn't hesitate to feature a recurring storyline about the coming out of a main character and a very preachy episode about climate change. CBS owns The CW, but they care far less about the content on the latter than the former. They likely felt Fuller was going "too far" with certain elements and they didn't want to risk anything with their streaming platform's flagship show.

The problem is, they may have very well doomed Discovery to failure by trying to be too careful. Time will tell, but the hope that was restored when we learned this was in the Prime Universe was all but completely eroded when the show got pushed back and when Fuller's departure was announced. I didn't think Fuller was the best guy for the gig or the only guy who could do it (would've preferred Manny Coto or, best of all, Ron Moore) but the creators of Pepper Dennis helming a Star Trek show doesn't give me much hope.

It is possible of course that he was going too far with some aspects. Almost everything he's said about the show was to do with the politics and diversity of the show, and while I get the importance of that, it's not a soapbox, it's a TV show. Was he translating his enthusiasm for Star Trek being his vision of a perfect future into entertaining scripts? As Joss Whedon understood, social points are made and status quos challenged by making compelling stories with strong characters first, who through their adventures pushed the boundaries of feminism, depiction of LGBT, etc. I was honestly becoming a little concerned that Fuller had swallowed the Genes Vision stuff a little too hard. But of course, I don't know that. It's pure speculation. But it does mean I'm not too upset someone else will get to tinker with the show before it's filmed, just to make sure there's a show there as well as a manifesto.

You're confusing writing quality and stability with ratings . Stng was never in any danger of cancellation.

Yep, TNG got great ratings from the time it first premiered.

That was why it was renewed. The fact that it took three years for some trekkies to warm to it had nothing to do with its commercial success or failure.

If Discovery drives enough subscriptions CBS won't be real concerned with whether fans are satisfied with it or not.

They are not putting money into this. They have shown no interest in 'Trek' for a decade.

The JJ Abrams Star Trek film franchise would like a word with you (4th JJ Abrams Universe Star trek film in pre-production too) - as would the TNG Blu-Rays, the TAS Blu Rays, etc.

There's also the Star Trek Online MMO - which launched in 2010 and has had many Star terek actors come in and voice their original characters, and it's in it's 6th year of operation and is overseen by CBS with regard to content addition and approval. (And yes, CBS has said NO to some content that was being planned over the years.)

I have three shiny new Bluray boxsets with well made bonus gifts attached that calls bullshit on Paramount not marketing Trek anymore.

They have new BR and DVD sets of most of the Prime verse lined up, TAS converted to BR for a start, to show they want this new wave of releases to carry them over for another few years.

Then we'll see the new scans or 4K, etc
