Bryan Fuller Stepping Back From Showrunner Role on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’

As much as I love "The Naked Time", this is the ultimate facepalm moment. There's also the time travel that makes zero sense. Then, you have an Engineering deck with only one entrance, and a Chief Engineer and his assistant both leave the area while in a tight and dangerous orbit because "they are wanted on the bridge", when they simply could have called up.

Lots of Star Trek over the years have plot holes and stupidities that should break the space-time continuum.

Agreed. We're suspending disbelief in order to be entertained - all of the ST universe has counted on the ST fans ability to suspend disbelief to one extent or another.

What an utterly superb experience it is though if you can do that. Suddenly that whole fantastical Star Trek universe comes to life, you're in another world, and you have a bonafide cultural phenomena on your hands.

Of course the writing and characterisation have to be first rate for the general public to be able to make that leap. TNG had it, By 60's standards so did TOS. DS9 too, but too late for in its run for it to catch on. VOY and ENT most certainly didn't, and we see what the end result was for the franchise.

Make Discovery to the standards of the first two shows from the start though, and Star Trek will be back where it belongs; top of the ratings, and considered once again the definitive television sci-fi concept.

Fingers crossed!

A great observation and I absolutely concur.

I would respectfully disagree here. Proclaiming every ST series was flawless would be indefensible, however there were horrible episodes in each series - each had their stinkers if we're being honest. In the same breath each had wonderful episodes, some actually worthy of your first statement, including Voyager and Enterprise.

The internet really has changed how we watch shows. With screw-ups in the old days, we might think "Huh, that was odd," and then let it slip to the back of our mind, but now we can discuss minutiae endlessly, which makes these issues seem much more important than they used to. Imagine if TOS was being made now - the fans would be so hostile that it wouldn't get a second season.

I think we all have this double standard, really. For the series we love, the bad episodes are regarded with humorous affection, and thought of as endearing flaws which don't undermine what makes that series great - whereas the bad episodes of the series we hate are proof positive that the entire thing was unredeemable garbage.
We are not logical creatures, after all....

Some ST series produced after 1987) were more stinker than good....

. I'm not really surprised about the news that Brian Fuller after reading several articles I've read online.. It sounded like he had too many irons in the fire so to speak when it came to working on too tv many projects at the same time. I still wonder what this means for the series in general and the problems of casting the lead female character for Discovery. And CBS wasn't happy about the delays when it comes to the series pilot will start filming.

I don't necessarily see the casting delay as a problem - it means they are trying to get the casting right. That said, I hope we will see an actor with a lot of personality in the part, and not just the "pretty face, adequate acting, forgettable presence" type that we too often see in Hollywood productions.

I dare you to watch "Sub Rosa(TNG)" and "A Night in Sickbay(ENT)" back-to-back and tell me you didn't cry while hunched over your toilet.

Sub rosa isn't a great episode and certainly not great for TNG but the atmosphere and mood I enjoyed. You want unwatchable try most of DS 9 Ferengi comedy hours or DS9 romance episodes or most of VOYs third season

I just knew it wouldn't be long before someone provided a proof to your theory ;)

A discussion is always improved by snark.

And even most uncivilized ones.
It was the copies of TV shows that they refused to send to Guantanamo because the President felt sorry for those guys.*

I agree on the Ferengi part and VOY, but I'll take DS9 romance over Sub Rosa any day, and twice on Sunday after a dental visit.

Favourite Son is the only really bad episode from that season which I can recall, and I can think of a number of good ones. I quite enjoyed a recent rewatch of Voyager, and didn't have to skip nearly as many episodes as with TOS or DS9.

With you on the DS9 Ferengi episodes, though, aside from The Magnificent Ferengi.

'TV these-a-days revels in excess. They should go back to making primetime series like Dynasty.'

:p

Admittedly, they don't make title sequences with such...'subtle' symbolism anymore.

Not enough metaphorical penises on tv today, that's what I always say.
Hey, I forgot all about Abe Lincoln on Dynasty.

Yeah, I need to amend my too. Magnificent Ferengi is probably one of the best episodes that highlights several aspects of Ferengi, Vorta and the such. A fun episode.

I think there is a big difference with trekkers, trekkies and generation trek...I love ds9, hated first 2 seasons of tng, and Voyager was supposedly was to empower us women but I hated the writing and how they made capt J a joke with feelings.

As a younger gen trekster I expect real problems not the federation is perfect and makes everything and everyone better. Ds9 wasn't popular with trekkers and Trekkies because they want the fantasy of everything being perfect. I hope discovery will give older gen what they need but push plots into real problems for the real world for us. The new treksters are older and will be watching closely.

I would also like to say I am worried CBS doesn't believe in SD pushing it back "for good wife series" and charging for subscription service to watch. How will it get popular if most people watch TV through cable. Will they say there is no ratings because of the media format and cancel it never giving new gen kids in families that can only afford normal tv the chance to learn, love, and maybe become treksters or treks?
