Bringing back an old game - Name the TrekLit Quote

It's clearly Picard in the scene. My first thought was Masks, which was the first TNG novel where Picard got any action, but I think that was written before Picard's artificial heart was established, and the lady in question wouldn't have been familiar with cosmetic surgery or artificial organs. (And of course it isn't The Buried Age.)

It sounds like it's a young Picard, since the TNG-era version doesn't have a scar on his chest. Something in the Stargazer era, I would guess, but I can't narrow it down more.

It's not The Buried Age, although you and Christopher are on the right track.

Progeniter?

I was thinking Reunion but I don't recall that scene anywhere. It's been a long time since I read it so I could be wrong.

But I'm so sick that I'm not all there today.

I'm afraid I have no idea with this one. I will just pick a book at random. One that I haven't read. My chances of being right are about 0.2%.

um

Incident at Arbuk?

OT, I know, but that was the first Trek book I ever read. Was quite decent as I recall. I was quite small though

The Valiant? It's the only 'gazer novel where Picard gets any, as I recall.

True... but that's not the book the quote is taken from, and none of the others guessed are correct so far. [Hint: The snippet is italicized because the original text is as well.]

^ Nope. New hint: the quoted scene refers back to a previous book by the same author as this passage, illustrating something that happened "off-screen" in that work. The female participant in the above scene returns in the book from which the quote is taken, even though this particular section is a flashback.

^ Correct! When Picard is contacted by Serenity Santana again, he flashes back to the time he spent with her on Magnia during the events of Valiant, but which was never shown in that book. Your turn.

Well, I'm at work now, so you'll all have to wait until I get home and am able to consult my collection...

"And he'd seen the tapes. In the past few weeks, he was positive that everyone on board had seen the tapes, just as they'd read the reports about the Tubman's disappearance. Even the best of them was unclear, having been found in a jettison pod in Sector Eight; it had been made after the ship's power had blown, and the skeletal shape, the gleaming, squidlike head and dripping tentacles, had been lit only by the fires of the unknown merchant vessel's burning engine room. But the image itself--eyeless, hissing, swaying as it ripped bodies open with the neat ghastliness of a razor--was the stuff of nightmares, like an escapee from the blackest pits of Hell."

Got it in one. I must say, I'm surprised-- it's not the most well known of novels. Maybe I should have gone for one from Star Trek III Short Stories after all!

Randomly enough, that happens to be one of the first Star Trek books I ever bought. It was a long time ago, but I read it way too many times... (I didn't remember the quote, but I recognized the Tubman.)

Anyway, this I think might be an easy one:

Alone, he whispered a single word to the wind and the dust.
"Why?"
And for the first time in two decades, the Guardian of Forever answered...

Yeah, I thought that'd be easy. :)
