Brian Brophy didn’t return?

This thread is really enjoyable to read. I actually found this thread after I watched the episode. Yes, I found myself looking real carefully to see if this was the Bruce Maddox I remembered. I was really disappointed when I realized it wasn’t the same actor. When they mentioned Bruce Maddox in the episodes I immediately thought of the original actor. They seem pretty good a researching some other things. It seems like they messed up on this one.

no, but I maybe could come up with a limerick...

let's see...

There once was an actor named Brian,
Whose fans are all nearly cryin'
He wasn't asked,
And simply recast,
And Maddox was soon enough dyin'
Awww, mischaracterization to say nearly cry in’. I know it’s a shock that maybe Star Trek fans would think about canon and details, but heaven forgive the intelligent and sentimental.

And, let’s be honest, as written, this Maddox could have been anyone and wasn’t necessary to be Maddox, specifically. They maybe should have gone with another cyberneticist who succeeded at the work if all he was was a way to get Agnes on the ship. But, if they were going to tease us with a specific character from a famous episode, for five episodes, since the pilot, it would just have been cool if they got (or asked) the original actor for it. Especially as his version might have added another layer of depth to the character that the new one didn’t — the layer of a previously unlikable character now with time or circumstance interestingly less so.

Every few years, the board has a burst of energy for some obscure character.

After '09 it was Robau (who was on screen for like 7 seconds).

Long before that, there was a brief but glorious outpouring for St. John Talbot. I can't even remember why, but it was fun for a couple of hours.

The internet's ability to take something silly and run it into the ground is constantly impressive.

IIRC, that was because someone started a thread claiming he had the "most ridiculous name in the entire Trek franchise" and then everything spiralled from there.

What do you mean IT WAS Robau?

Walk with me.

So to sum it all up, all recasts are bad... except for the ones I approve?
W’w’w’w’wait a minute. Re-what now?

But, no, seriously, who said anything about “their own personal approval“ of recasting? Sounds like a straw man argument to me.

If an actor is unavailable or declines or whatever, okay. But that’s different from, meh, we didn’t consider it. Or, meh, we just wanted to use his name for continuity porn or whatever, but nothing else. Uh, no thank you?

mischaracterization maybe, but
