Borderlands. Anyone getting it?

OK the new DLC is great, if you're a fan of the game (and Zombies) you'll love it.
the opening narration had me cracking up.

Yeah, I'd pick it up if it weren't for all the other games I'm playing. I didn't even finish the second playthrough yet.

I'm thinking about getting this game for my roomie for Christmas. He was a huge Diablo fan, and from what I've heard this game captures that spirit pretty well.

If they like loot-whore games but prefer the direct action of FPS games, this is really the perfect game. Also, none of that pesky "story" to get in the way. ;)

He's definitely a big fan of loot. He played through Fallout 3 pretty much just to get all the unique weapons that are available. Thats good to know. This is looking like a solid pick for a Christmas gift.

I thought Borderlands' weak-ass story was better than Halo3's weaker-ass story.

Then again, I could be mis-remembering Halo3 since I played Mass Effect right before it and Mass Effect's story is one of the best out there.

Well, Mass Effect is an RPG after all. Take away all the cutscenes and you're not left with much.

I must say, other than the 5 minute unskippable intro (I guess the band paid for that :p ) and the short ending video, Borderlands doesn't have much of that either.

I was thinking more in terms of the audio pieces and text information you get about Pandora and its inhabitants as you progress through the game. Those were more interesting than just about anything in Halo3.

I enjoyed some of the logs, but the overall fiction of the world was mostly non-existent. But that's how ARPGs work - you're just a random character who is told to kill 10 rats to collect their fur.

Halo 3 and ODST had their own logs as well - and those were the best parts of those games, really. The actual Master Chief story? I agree... not so much.

I'm on my second playthrough now. I emptied literally all the ammo I had in to skagzilla and I couldn't kill it. It was pretty fun though.

Yeah, you really need high damage weapons in playthrough 2/2.5

As for the DLC, I think I'm passing. They made the game harder by making the "raids" take an entire afternoon. Which is fine, unless don't want to sit and play a single game for 5 hours straight - let alone convince 3 other people to do it with you.

As for the viability of BL as a singleplayer RPG, it really depends on your personal preferences.

Myself, as an RPG, I find it to be lacking in terms of NPC interaction (or rather, NPC *presence*, I mean, there are hardly any NPCs to speak of in this game) and depth, story-wise. Also, the setting tends to get very samey very fast.

Just based on pure gameplay fun and gun collecting, it's more than okay for one, maybe two playthroughs and some toying around with the character classes, though.

The insane amount of side quests and any dialog from Patricia Tannis and Scooter is always fun. The game is great in that respect.

I have noticed though that the loot drops will sometimes get "stuck" so you end up fighting increasingly difficult enemies while your weapons/shields/mods remain very underpowered. It creates little bottlenecks in the game because I'm spending a lot of time killing tough enemies (even when using appropriate elemental weapons) and ending up with nothing to show for it.

Also Bloodwing is horribly bugged and only seems to work right half the time. When he does his job it's spectacular but too often he gets stuck on obstacles or circles and refuses to attack any enemy that's even slightly obscured.
