Books about Voyager's Journey

I think everyone agrees that "Before Dishonor" was not PAD's strongest work. In fact, it was downright weak. If Janeway had met a similar fate in the Destiny trilogy, there would be far fewer complaints; that would be a worthy storyline to go out on. Much of the discontent arises from the fact that she went out in a relatively weak book that wasn't even under the Voyager banner.

While PAD certainly deserves criticism for the weakness of the book, he should not be blamed for the event in question in general; I believe the decision to take that step was handed down from the editors, or somewhere higher up anyway.

Personally I would have complained if Janeway had been annihilated in "Destiny" too. I don't like to see my favorites destroyed. First Kes, then Data and now Janeway. Who will be the next victim for the "creative destruction" of great characters. Maybe we should start betting?

Why read a novel where the characters explore extremely dangerous territory (ie. uncharted space) over many, many years - but you are guaranteed that no one will ever die or change?

If you know your favourite characters are sacrosant, nothing can ever really threaten them. It lessens the drama. Part of the impact TNG's Best of Both Worlds cliffhanger when it first aired was due to Patrick Stewart being involved in contract negotiations at the time, and thpse negotations apparently going badly so fans had a real sense of fear that Picard might die.

Those who bought into Roddenberry's vision till expect Trek to give a hopeful view of the future. I personally don't watch Trek for death and destruction but rather to see a hopeful future where humanity has learned a thing or two and our heroes triumph.

That being said I'm also a huge fan of nuBSG. While I loved many of the characters through the show's run I never expected all of them to make it through to the end. That was never the premise. However, the writing was so good and the characters so interesting that I stuck with it anyway.

That would certainly describe the final volume of the "Destiny" novel trilogy. And JJ Abrams' 2009 movie, too.

Everyone tells their personal anecdotes around the campfire, but Neelix has to magically channel the Kes POV story, as well as his own. And Seven doesn't get to contribute hers.

It's been a while since I've read it but I thought 7's story was very poignant and fitting because of its astonishing briefness. As I recall it went something like this..

"My parents were explorers. The schooled me on the ship. I had cake for my birthday. And then the Borg came."

It was quite wrenching after everyone elses suitably long and involved lives to feel how cut short her whole life had been.

I LOVED "Mosaics"(actually have the book on tape with Kate Mulgrew as the reader..she's awesome!!!) and Pathways...both very interesting reads and kept me on the edge of my seat reading and listening to them!

Also early Voyager reads that I adored: "Ghost of a Chance", "Ragnarok", and of course, "Caretaker".

As for the relaunch books, I have only read an excerpt from the "Full Circle" novel, and it was the first six pages of the book. It was the most beautiful six pages as well as the most difficult six pages to read. I got teary eyed because that's when I felt like Voyager had died as well. But you all know what? I don't think Janeway's really dead! I think her subconsciousness is still around..and the crew has to look for it. Kinda like the episode "Cathexis" where Chakotay's subconscious was bouncing around the ship and you thought he was dead.

I agree with you, kimc. I'm also a very big fan of nuBSG and I loved many of the characters throughout the show as well. I had a feeling also that many of them were gonna die and wouldn't make it through so I had to prepare myself for the unevitable. I also watched Voyager not for the destruction, but for the journey and the desire to get back home to earth. In many ways, Voyager does indeed coincide with nuBSG. I found it fascinating how both ships are trying to head towards earth(even though BSG is actually looking for the place and Voyager is stranded in DQ). I guess that's why I liked nuBSG in the first place..because it reminded me alot of Voyager.
Lynx: I must warn you..Star Trek is not all about heroes and adventures..it's also about destruction of homeworlds and other places..I take it you didn't like the new Star Trek movie as well? You'd be surprised on that one. Not gonna give it away in case you haven't seen it..but I must warn you..it's not always what you think it could be.

I don't care how cliched it is to bring her back I expect it to happen eventually. And I don't want her brought back as some half mystical glowing woowoo lady either. I want the real woman, drinking coffee and barking orders at people.

! Sorry, but your comment made me laugh in the end. Anyway, I hear you on that one. I didn't necessarily read to see HOW she died(I preferred not to as I thought it was tragic enough to learn that she DID die!) I just read online that there was a rumor going on that she had indeed died. I honestly don't believe she's dead either. She just disappeared somewhere or went off doing something else. But your comment gave me quite a laugh..especially the "half mystical glowing woowoo lady" and the "real woman, drinking coffee and barking orders at people" comment! That was freaking hilarious! I swear!! Most of the Voyager fans here do indeed have a funny sense of humor! Cracks me up! That's the second time today I've had quite a laugh!

uh as good as it was there was massive amounts of death and destruction in destiny..
add in i dont think the former drones really had a fair chance to decide their destiny.

LOL!!!Love that woo-woo/coffee/etc, too!!..AND AMEN TO HER RETURN! (She never left in Voyagerian's fanfic, yo!)I would add that 'Pathways' as far as the past books is a favorite-especially for its showing, thank you Jeri Taylor, Kes' past, however brief, but very eventful, before finding her way into Neelix and Kathryn's lives. She did a good job with all of them. I have 'Mosaic', as well, and all the earlier STV novels, except 'Seven Of Nine'. 'The Black Shore', and 'Marooned' are also faves, off the top of my head.The 'Dark Matters' trilogy, too.

I know that one missing character is supposed to make a guest appearance but that doesn't mean that the character will re-join the crew and therefore I don't care that much about that guest appearance. I do know that there are a lot of grieving for another character and that scenario doesn't interest me either.

What I do know is also that the main character is killed of and three others are missing for different reasons and since I see no hints or don't find any information that any of those characters, especially the main character will be brought back as permanent members of the regular cast (without further destruction of the characters), I see no reason to read the books or try to like the scenario in them.

as much as i didnt like some of the things done to voyager and her crew in both before dishoner and in destiny itself..
full circle and unworthy really brings about a lot of redemption.

and the four so called missing characters play a far bigger role then you have been told.

Can you please give me something that would make me change my mind about the current Voyager books, something that outweights what I find negative and destructive.

We all know that

janeway remains killed off in those books.

Kes isn't present (and I can actually live with that because if they did bring her back, then they would probably continue with the "Fury" crap and destroy the character even more).

Tuvok isn't on board Voyager anymore.

Neelix makes a "guest appearance" but no indications that he will stay on the ship.

Not to mention that I suspect that they will pair off Chakotay and Seven again in some not too distant future.

So what's so positive about those books?

i dont see this at all. they come across more as friends and probably will evolve into one of those brother / sister type things.

Chakotay at the end of unworthy gets a fair bit of redemeption and is back in command of voyager/

neelix seems to be fine even though not back on board.
and i am fine with tuvok not on voyager since the titan books are now my favorite book series.
