Bob Orci and the lost Shatner scene

Re: Shatner's cameo!!!

Possibly some SPOILERS follow...

I had read over at Trekmovie.com that they had written a scene, where at the end when Spock Prime is talking to nuSpock, Nimoy would pull out a holographic recording that Shatner-Kirk had made. It would have been a birthday greeting for Spock and sort of a "goodbye" since Spock was preparing to go to Romulus at the time for Unification efforts and Kirk was not sure if he would see Spock again in his lifetime. It was said this would have been a lead-in for Shatner doing the "...to explore strange new worlds..." monologue.

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

They could have re-worked the cave meld scene somehow so that when young kirk asks about his father, Spock melds with him and gives him a flashback of Shatner's Kirk talking to Spock about his father, it may have made the 'Kirk without a dad' plot line more meaningful. This would have also made the part when nero tells kirk he will kill him just like he did his father more noteworthy as well.
And that excellent idea makes you smarter than writers of a major motion picture. Sad but true.

Re: Shatner's Scene could have worked!

I saw an interview with JJ where he said it wouldn't have worked and he couldn't make it work for the life of him, because everything they came up with was too contrived.

So there you go.

Re: Shatner's Scene could have worked!

The one I saw had Shatner only appearing in a birthday hologram message to Spock.

I think that would have sucked. "Hey, Spock! Happy Birthday, you old Space Dog! When you get back from Romulus, lets go chase some tail, okay!"

Feh.

Re: Shatner's Scene could have worked!

I think it would have been cool durring the mind meld for Kirk to see his future self. That's the only way I could see it working in this movie.

I think it could have worked. Based on what Orci described it wasn't a "Hey, Spock, Happy Birthday let's have drinks when you get back." It would have been a final message from Kirk to Spock after he took on the Ambassadorship position. Kirk would have known he would never see Spock again so he created the holo-image as a send off. Then Orci describes that Shatner would have done a voice over to overlay when young Kirk is getting command of the Enterprise at the end.

I think it really could have work.

That would have been soooo nuCool. :guffaw:

Re: Shatner's Scene could have worked!

Shatner wasn't in it.

I wish people would get over it already!

Re: Shatner's Scene could have worked!

To all you sceptics!!!

Tell me why it wouldn't have worked huh?

Give me a true and genuine reason why it wouldn't have worked

(and don't give any of that he's too fat and old crap)

Re: Shatner's Scene could have worked!

JJ should have shot that for the extended DVD variant. He would have sold an extra few million for sure. I'm surprised he didn't offer it to Shatner, unless he just felt it was too small a part for him to accept.

Oh well, off to multiverse where this is in the film, and Nero is female.

Re: Shatner's Scene could have worked!

I would have had Kirk come back (in some time travel device) to retrieve Spock Prime. Since this is an alternate timeline, in this timeline, he did not die. It's this timelines Kirk. He came to bring him back to TNG time (as he did come out of the Nexus and saved Viridian III with Picard but survived, maybe because Spock Prime told Kirk (Pine) to prepare for falling bridges).

It sounds bad, distracting and gratuitous. Like at this point in the movie Young Spock is looking at Old Spock and saying "huh, prove to me that Kirk and I are gonna be friends. Go ahead, I dare you!"

I think it would have been cool durring the mind meld for Kirk to see his future self. That's the only way I could see it working in this movie.

But that could affect Kirk's future behavior! Like:

MCCOY: Bartender, two Budweiser Classics!
KIRK: Uh, Bones, make mine a Lite.
MCCOY: What's with you lately? And what's with all the fussing with your hair?

But he is too fat and too old. He's fatter and older than he was in Generations and looks nothing like the Kirk of old who would have made that recording.

More importantly - he didn't need to be in this movie. It didn't need Prime Kirk involved in any way shape or form. Some people even say Spock didn't need to be in there.

It's contrived nonsense to try and push that in there when it's not needed.

Are you kidding? I wouldn't trade badass Eric Bana in badass boots and a badass coat for anything.

Well, I guess JJ spent quite some time trying to find a way to fit Shatner in w/out it looking stupid and contrived, but came to the realisation that when you try too hard, it's probably best to leave it alone. He said something to that effect a while ago.

Shatner's Kirk died. That he definitely did say. And he's right. As usual. :p

Besides being purely contrived, just off the top of my head it:
1. Doesn't advance the plot.
2. Doesn't add to the characters (by this time, the audience aleady knows Kirk and Spock are/will be friends).
3. It is too sentimental. It would bring the movie down. It focuses on the past, not the future. It would border on pure fanwank in a movie that was supposed to be avoiding it.
4. Shatner doing a voiceover during the promotion scene takes away from Kirk's moment. The focus should be on this Kirk becoming captain, not the blathering of another Kirk about how great his life with Spock was.
5. IT'S A HOLOGRAM! 'Nuff said about that one.

It would've been neat if Shatner simply would've agreed to end the movie with the, "Space, the final frontier...," monologue once more (instead of Nimoy doing it). Or, if his voice started it, and Pine's finished it. But as it is, the story stands on it's own without the Shatner's Kirk scene.
