Bob Orci and the lost Shatner scene

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

Pine should've don the final voice over, to be his opening/inductory entry into his captain's log.

I also thought Pine should have done the voiceover. I'd expected he WOULD. Was surprised over Nimoy doing it.

It's Kirk's lines. Should have been Pine, especially with Kirk just having been given the ship.

Maybe at the start of the next film.

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

I don't mind it except for the implication that young Spock would have needed more help to become Kirk's friend. By that point in the film he doesn't need any more convincing, and I think the scene would have undermined the respect that Kirk and Spock had already developed.

Yes well put, i tend to agree with this. Nimoy-Spock was essential to guiding Quinto-Spock away from the strictly vulcan 'Kolinar' route and into more acceptance of the potential of his human side and the benefits of friendship, but after that they should be left on their own to let it develop naturally.

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

IF Shatner had to be in it at all (and clearly, he didn't), I would have preferred something of a "flashback" during Spock's mind-meld with Kirk in the cave--something brief establishing that Spock was who he claimed to be rather than what I've read in here (I make no claim that my idea is objectively superior, I just think it would have been a bit more well integrated into the film--maybe splice in the "goodbye" scene in Engineering from TWOK). In any event, it is clear that the approach they took precluded an "altered" timeline that undoes Kirk's death in the "prime" timeline.

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

I don't think that would have worked.

Especially for the new audience; they would all be wondering "who the hell is this guy?"...

Even for people who never watched Star Trek, almost everyone knows about William Shatner and his connection to Star Trek. Shatner and Nimoy are cultural icons.

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

This scene possibly could have worked, but I think having a brief scene of Shatner with Nimoy during Spock Prime's mind meld with Kirk would have worked much better.

No, I don't think so.

They know Spock (with the pointy ears and the handsign) and Kirk (with the ragged shirt). There's a difference.

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

As much as I like Shatner and his portrayal of Kirk, I'm glad that the scene didn't happen. It's cutesy, stunty.

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

I disagree. The scene, handled properly, would've satisfied all fans, all around.

And the VO could have switched, from Shatner to Pine. Pine could say "to boldly go.." part, to cap the film off and all.

Glad I thought of it. ;)

Imagine the conniption fit though--the engineering section doesn't look like this one--CANON VIOLATION!!111!!1111111!!!!!1 NOOOO111!!!!!!111!!1!!

I don't think there's anyone who doesn't actually know who the original captain Kirk was, particularly not any of the people who went to see the film. Even I knew who Kirk was, and I'm completely new to the fandom.

That being said, I think having him in the film would not have worked. When you're reimagining something classic, you have to walk a very fine line between nodding to the original, and making your own work. I think small things like "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor" and the like were about the extend you could get without making new audiences roll their eyes. Even the aforementioned line got a reaction. I was in the theatre with my Boyfriend, who was there proudly wearing his own captain Kirk uniform shirt, and he gave that moment a nice little rim shot and a roll of the eyes. When it's a new medium, some things just have to be left behind.

Having Shattner in the film would have been great for the true die hard fans, but the fact is that the film had to be marketable to new fans as well as old. Having Shattner in there would have come across as corny to these new audiences and while we appreciate the legacy that comes with a movie like Star Trek, each new bit has to make it's own way. If it relies too much on what came before, it'll never be able to forge a new path, get new fans, continue that wonderful legacy.

I'm glad the scene was cut out. I would, however, love it if Shattner was approached to maybe do an alternate version for the DVD, for those die hard fans that have earned their nod and appreciation.

Nah, then fans would have wanted a cameo from George Takei, and Walter Koenig, and Nichelle Nichols, and Grace Lee Whitney.

That way madness lies . . . :)
