Bob Orci and the lost Shatner scene

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

I disagree. The scene, handled properly, would've satisfied all fans, all around.

Yeah, I'm all for out-of-nowhere, stunt cameos As Long As They're Done Well.

;)

I still think they should have gone with Sam Cogley's Boston Legal Style Ending. :p

According to the writers, they had a scene of Spock playing the Vulcan lute, and his mother, that got axed.

I would have liked to have seen Spock playing his mother, if it was done well.

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

They could have re-worked the cave meld scene somehow so that when young kirk asks about his father, Spock melds with him and gives him a flashback of Shatner's Kirk talking to Spock about his father, it may have made the 'Kirk without a dad' plot line more meaningful. This would have also made the part when nero tells kirk he will kill him just like he did his father more noteworthy as well.

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

2 words: Director's cut. (not likely, even with a quickly slice of old footage into the mind meld scene)

I think it would have been a nice cameo if done correctly, but it would have been pandering to fan nostalgia. It may have tied up the alternate universe connection nicely.

I also think Pine should have read the last line too. If they really wanted to cheese it up, they could have had the Shatner version fade into the Pine version.

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

I don't think that would have worked.

Especially for the new audience; they would all be wondering "who the hell is this guy?"...

Even for people who never watched Star Trek, almost everyone knows about William Shatner and his connection to Star Trek. Shatner and Nimoy are cultural icons.
No, I don't think so.

They know Spock (with the pointy ears and the handsign) and Kirk (with the ragged shirt). There's a difference.

Everybody knows that the guy on Boston Legal and in the Priceline commercials was Captain Kirk. Shatner is as much an icon, at least in America, as any famous actor.

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

There wouldn't have been a single person in the audience that would've said "Who's that????" when it showed Shatner.

As for the scene, I think it would have been cool. It would have been a nice little goodbye scene for Shatner's Kirk, and it would have put him in the movie, which would have been great.

Everyone is saying that it wouldnt have worked and they are glad it wasnt in there, but if it had been included, I bet people would be saying "What a great little scene! It worked really well!"

Re: Shatner Scene Revealed

I just read an interview in Wizard with Shattner that says they were talking to him about the film but then just dropped off, pretty early in the planning. I'm guessing they just decided it wasn't a good enough idea to follow through with, though he does wish he could have been in it.

Here's something we haven't really mentioned. Maybe it was a budget thing? I mean, I know they dropped millions of dollars on this thing, but maybe his price tag was just a little too high? I mean, he can't possibly come cheap. He's William Shattner. Maybe they just thought it was too much to pay for such a small thing that would have been cool, but not altogether necessary?

But we've already said good-bye to Shatner twice now . . . in UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY and GENERATIONS.

Only Cher gets that many farewell tours. . . .

Re: What the Shatner scene would have been

I think it would have worked really well.

J.J. has already said that there is a chance we will see the Shat in the sequel. "There are always possibilities"

Shatner's cameo!!!

had he been in the movie, and he was approached for a cameo, so JJ says, where would that have been? As Kirk's father? With Spock in the ice-cave? Has this been leaked yet???

Re: Shatner's cameo!!!

What what been leaked? Something that never happened?

Re: Shatner's cameo!!!

Shatner is only in the movie if you consider the tribble in Scotty's desk cage on Delta Vega. And even then it's only his toupee.

He was never actually offered a role in the film. JJ, Orci, and the gang tried to write a scene for him, but they couldn't come up with something that worked given the huge continuity hurdle of his Kirk being dead. The scene was nixed early and Shatner was not offered a role. We may never know what idea they were briefly kicking around.
