Board games!

Since I changed states I don't have anyone to play with!:(

But it used to be:

Axis&Allies/Fortress America(painted my pieces-into it a little too much there!)
Diplomacy
RISK(the game of games)
Stratego(until I figured out the can't lose opening)
Buck Rogers(actually fun despite stupid premise)
Dragonlance(see comment above)
Monopoly
and if it qualifies: Yahtzee!
Scrabble
Trivial Pursuit
Lie, Cheat, and Steal

.. Naively I still think of board games as fun entertainment ~ not the total destruction and humiliation of your fellow players. :klingon:

Silly you. :p I love strategy, building and completely destroying my fellow players--especially if it's my husband.

And, yes, Settlers of Cataan is a GREAT game, but you MUST get the Cities and Knights expansion to make it worthwhile. Cheap, it is not.

<--Is in the top 200 in the world on Xbox Live Carcassonne (out of around 100,000 if I'm not mistaken).

Dude, I am seriously impressed!

Yahtzee is the best game ever! Scrabble is my second fave.

We also play, Trivial Pursuit, Risk, Life, and lots of card games.

If strategy includes sulking, stomping off and tears then I have mastered it  I seriously didn't realise how bad a loser I was :scream:
I think he has secretly bought it but is just waiting until I am in a very good mood to bring it on.

And yes AdAstra my man uses that site, which I count as cheating :p Especially when half way through a game he will come up with new rules... :scream:

Back in the day it was cutthroat Monopoly for me and the crew. As the evening grew late, we'd roundly curse each other, and question one anothers parentage with each roll of the dice or exchange of money. Most fun ever.

Oh Monopoly ~ bliss :) But did you play 'the money from Chance and Community Chest goes into Free Parking spot'? T'is a bone of contention amongst 'Monopolisers' ;) We did, but the purists disagree

I recently played one called Last Man on Earth. It's a zombie board game; it was almost like a board game version of Left 4 Dead. You chose, at random, from a variety of different characters with various abilities on a board that was randomized every time and there are a ton of scenarios. It was a blast to play! Anyone else heard of it?

Not heard of it. Sounds cool though! I've always wished someone would make a zombie survival computer strategy game. This might be the closest thing.

Yep, that was one of our rules. :)

Now that I think back, though its not a boardgame, the one game that made us even more foul-mouthed and abusive than Monopoly was UNO :)

*sigh* Wish I had someone to play with nowadays.

^ Ever played MegaMonopoly? It takes the "cut-throat" style to a whole new level.

One of Hubby's friends combined his MegaMonopoly with the Millennium edition and it was one HELL of a game.

Oh yeah.......for those who like zombie games, I got a real kick out of "Give Me the Brain!"

Ah ha! I knew it ~ he has secretly bought 'Settlers' already (but apparently got it at a bargain off Ebay Auntie  ) and let me lose by only 260 - 240 points in Stone Age tonight thus using strategy to introduce another bloody game. Never tried MegaMonopoly though.

Interested in any other good 2 player games (we have no friends:confused::lol:) if anyone has recommendations? Anyone heard of 'Odin's Ravens'

and Cutterjohn you can play lots of board games online. Try http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/77942

I love how half the people in this thread are just throwing out vanilla bullshit games because they're completely unfamiliar with the german/euro/designer scene. :)

I love me some Power Grid, Agricola, Pandemic, and of course the way-too-awesome-for-a-licensed-game Battlestar Galactica. :)

I love how this is pretty much the only topic in the world that can pull me out of lurker status.

Board games?
What are board games ;)

Risk btw is my board game of choice ;) That future one with the mechs and command cards and stuff. I think its called Risk 2120

Ha, I thought the same thing. But I used to be like that once, and over the last couple of years have gotten into the good board game scene.

My favourites:

Battlestar Galactica
Powergrid
Chinatown
Arkham Horror
Pandemic
1960: The Making of the President
War on Terror
Age of Empires 3

Have also played a few others, but the above are ones I like a lot.

Battlestar probably is my favorite.

I was thinking something similar, but I'm glad people are participating in this thread. If anything they might pick up some of the less known board games as well. :)

See that's the nice way to say it :)

And not 'the people that enjoy playing popular board games to spend time with their friends and family are inferior to us' way.

Any chance to get people around a table for a common cause is good, but let's not quibble about whether it's 'Family Fortunes' or 'Puerto Rico'.

but Omnius you're right, hopefully others will go on to try different games after reading this thread:techman:

A few other games worth mentioning, Puerto Rico, Tigris & Euphrates...

...and a gem of a party game that anyone, eurosnob or naive monopoly fetishist can appreciate:

Cash n Guns.

In a nutshell, everybody gets 8 cards. Two are "bang" cards, i.e. bullets. One is a "bang bang bang" card which trumps regular bullets. The other five are "click" cards. You load your foam gun (yes, the game comes with six foam guns) before each round, and then on the count of three everybody points their guns at another player. Then on the count of three, anybody who wants to set their guns down can, but they don't get their share of the loot. Everybody left who isn't shot or out that round gets to split the loot. The goal at the end of the game is to have more loot than anyone else, but if you get shot three times, you're dead.

You're welcome.

Oh, and anybody play Twilight Struggle? It's next on my list of games to pick up, it looks really cool. War games are fun, yes. But a cold war game? Fuckin' A.

Ditto that. But I can have fun with some of the Vanilla party games, too. I like 25 Words or Less or Catchphrase --because the competitive streak in me just HAS to play! But nothing is like kicking ass at Power Grid. Battlestar was fun (hubby is a nuBSG fan), too--but I find it somewhat tedious after we played it 3 or 4 times. Agricola aggravates the hell out me, because I can NOT beat my husband at this game to save my life---but I keep trying. I find it challenging, and I like that. He loves the game; he even bought the "meeples" for it--little wooden sheep, carrots, bread, fish, logs, etc.

I enjoyed Pandemic, as well. It is a surprisingly complex little game; at a game party, while the men were playing Twilight Imperium for the umpteenth time, the women took Pandemic out (a brand new game) and figured out how to play. It took us three times through to really figure it out, but by the third time, we had it completely whipped.

I have played Puerto Rico a few times, but I find the set up to be a pain in the ass. I much prefer the fast and easy San Juan; I'm becoming less and less patient in my old age.

Has anyone here played Kill Doctor Lucky, or the even harder (IMO), Save Doctor Lucky?

There's also a fun Munchkin-type game called Ninja Burger. Like the Munchkin games, the cards are pretty damn funny. But I'll always have a place in my heart for Star Munchkin.

Monopoly is awesome. The next one I want to get is the Nintendo Monopoly. I have the original, the Canadian one, the Simpsons one and, my favourite, the Corvette edition.
