Board games!

I've been a regular at my local gamestore for quite some time, and in the basement they have a space where you can play lots of different (new and old) board games on every wednesday evening.

My personal favourites:
Arkham Horror, a cooperative board game where the goal is to prevent an ancient evil from entering our world. You do this by closing portals in the city of Arkham with your companions.
Axis & Allies, play the axis or the allies in this reenactment of the Second World War.
Battlestar Galactica, also a cooperative board game. Everyone plays a different main character from the series and the goal is to reach Kobol. But one of you is a Cylon, so you have to figure out who that is before you run out of resources and mankind is doomed.
Diplomacy, the game without chance. Every player plays one of the major powers during the first world war. Your own bluff & diplomacy skills determine if you will have any friends left after playing this game .
Twilight Imperium, basicly the board game variant of Master of Orion & Birth of the Federation. Very good. Highly recommended.

And lots more, Dominion, Race for the Galaxy, Tide of Iron, Power Grid, Carcasonne, Fluxx, etc

What board games do you like and do you recommend?

My favorite board games are

Monopoly, Acquire, and Scrabble. Though Scrabble is the only one I prefer to play on an actual board (as opposed to electronically).

i play boardgames with other people usually @ two places on the net http://superdupergames.org that site needs a computer upgrade or two but the games and such are in beta and the ai is usually programed by some of the players there or the games are developed by the players themselves I am xoet at this site.. the other RT board gaming site besides boardgame geek thing is .. http://www.boardspace.net/

Good old Monopoly has kept my family together so we can have arguments over who's been hiding the £500 notes for years now.

Ditto Scrabble, a family lifesaver whenever the TV is broken. :bolian:

I just played one at the last family party I was at called "apples to apples" which was really fun. Better I think with adult aged because of how the game works (it doesn't play so well when young teens don't know or grasp certain terms or older pop-culture references). Very fun though.

i really like Heroscape. i wish i had a bigger place, just so i could keep a board constantly set up for play.

there is some Knights of the Round game that i had a lot of fun with. it's kinda like the BSG game described above. everyone is a knight, working to save Camelot. One player might be a traitor, trying to sabotage the other players.

I never get to play board games anymore. Some of my favorites though:

Monopoly
Settlers of Cataan
Scrabble
Backgammon
Scattagories (Awesome game)

I love some good ol' Trivial Pursuit, Twenty Questions, Monopoly.
I'm usually a big fan of board games, so whenever I have an evening with friends and someone brings one, we happily play well into the night.

I played Heroscape for a while, but when I moved I left all of my stuff in storage. I just bought a few Master Sets to start playing again.

Other games I like are...

Axis and Allies--my fav, created many maps and house rules for it

Fortress America

Blokus--fun new tetris like puzzle game

GI Joe the card game

Ticket to Ride

Dark Tower was great, but only my buddy had it when we were young.

Scrabble....

My husband and his friends are all HARD CORE board-game geeks, so I've been lucky to play quite a few of them.

I LOVE Settlers of Cataan. I could play that all night. I almost always lose, though.

I also like Power Grid, Ticket to Ride, Blue Moon City and Carcasonne. I can seriously kick ass at Carcasonne.

There are lots of card games that are great, too. BANG! has got to be one of the greatest party card-games ever, as it becomes LOADS more fun with 8-12 people. I really like the "building" card games like Citadels and San Juan. 3 Dragon Ante, Bohnanza and any of the Munchkin games are among my all-time favorites.

Ahh, board games. I'm a big fan, but generally more of the Eurogames variety.

My current favourite is Agricola! A game about farming in 12th century Germany, it's killer. ;)

I forgot one board game and I am shocked it hasn't been mentioned here:

RISK

That's a game that makes 6 hours feel like 6 minutes.

Auntie, I can really recommend Dominion, its a really cool card game. :techman:
What Power Grid gameboard do you have? The US/Germany one I presume?

Monopoly is pretty fun. I recently started getting into Stratego as well. However, my big game is definately RISK. Played a game that was so intense and so close that by the last two rounds of turns, there was still 3 of us still in perfect position to win the whole game.

Noooo!! Not Carcasonne :( My man stops my meadows and steals my rivers :scream:

He has just got back into these types of board games and I am guinea pig. Naively I still think of board games as fun entertainment ~ not the total destruction and humiliation of your fellow players. :klingon:

He has spoken of Settlers of Cataan do you recommend it Auntie and Tomalak? What is it similar too?

We also have Stone Age :wtf: but my favourite is Lost Cities ~ a simple in appearance card game but with lots of strategy play.

And old favourites, Alaska and Contraband.

I would recommend it. I wouldn't say it's similar to anything, but it's still quite a fun game. The good thing about it too is that the board always changes since it's something you create before play begins.

I recently played one called Last Man on Earth. It's a zombie board game; it was almost like a board game version of Left 4 Dead. You chose, at random, from a variety of different characters with various abilities on a board that was randomized every time and there are a ton of scenarios. It was a blast to play! Anyone else heard of it?

<--Is in the top 200 in the world on Xbox Live Carcassonne (out of around 100,000 if I'm not mistaken).

I play that game WAY too much!
