Blackadder!!!

Hi all. So my friend scolded me a couple nights ago for not knowing about the BBS series Blackadder. Consequently I've been making my way thru them and I'm now on series three. Pretty hilarious I must say. Anyone else around here a fan of the series. From what I've read there will never be anymore for several reasons but that ok I guess.

Just thought I's share something newly discovered for me, the wife and I have been laughing our asses off!

I love Blackadder! The second and third seasons the most, then the fourth, and the first brings up the rear. And Blackadder's Christmas Carol is traditional Christmas Day viewing for me. :)

"Duel and Duality" is my favorite episode, followed by "Sense and Senility," "Ink and Incapacity," "Bells," and "Head." (Those aren't in any particular order, just how I remembered them.)

You're incredibly lucky.

You've still got the fourth series to watch.

For my money, one of the finest seasons of television that there is, comedy or otherwise.

A more poignant examination of the first world war you will not find.

Won't give anything away but the final episode and the final scene, are incredible.

I love Blackadder! Rowan Atkinson's just perfect...

I especially enjoy Series Three where Blackadder is the personal butler of Hugh Laurie's Prince Regent. There's this one episode "Ink and Incapability" where Robbie Coltrane makes an appearance as Dr. Samuel Johnson--Blackadder and Baldrick happen to burn Dr. Johnson's famous dictionary, and they must write a new one before the Doctor finds out--it is the funniest episode of all the Blackadders, imho!

(just thinking of the fake 'words' that Blackadder makes up to say to Dr. Johnson has me in stitches right now...:guffaw:)

Glad you started to watch the series, T J! You won't be disappointed.

Glad to hear it gets better because I've been finding it rather juvenile. In about the middle of S2 right now, which I like more than S1.

Funny that this thread cropped up, as it's been announced that Blackadder's famous codpiece is up for auction.

Speaking of codpieces...

BALDRICK
My uncle Baldrick was in a play once.

BLACKADDER
Really?...And what did he play?

BALDRICK
Second codpiece. Macbeth wore him in the fight scenes.

BLACKADDER
So he was a stunt codpiece.

BALDRICK
Yes.

BLACKADDER
Did he have a large part?

BALDRICK
Depends who's playing Macbeth.

I'm a big fan too. Whilst the 4th series is my favourite, I prefer Blackadder's personality in the 2nd series. He seemed to be at his acerbic best in that series.

Terrific show! Some of Rowan Atkinson's best work. Also, a great cast of (sort of) recurring characters, played by some very funny actors, most notably Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry.

I was especially amused by "Bob" in Series 2 and 4, and the fact that Blackadder's social rank dropped lower in each subsequent series.

The fourth series is by far my favourite, but I like the third series as well.

I show the first and last episodes of Blackadder Goes Forth to my class on War and Society in 20th-century Britain, to help them understand the British popular memory of the Great War, and in what ways this differs from the historical reality. It's always a big hit.

I gather there åwas some preliminary talk about a 5 season set in the 1960s. Edmund would of been the manager of a band called "The Black Adder Five" but it was canned on the grounds it would of been a bit to close to the modern day.

I used to have this as my avatar for a while:

Quite right. I believe Baldrick would have been known as "Bald Rick" had there been such a series. Shame it was never meant to be. :(

I like them in order of decreasing series. I love the first three but the fourth one didn't quite click for me. I remember when I first saw the ending of the first series when Edmund dies in the torture chair I was really sad and depressed!

There were a couple of ideas that Richard Curtis kicked around.

One was "Blackadder 005," which would have been a take-off of James Bond. (Atkinson's Johnny English is probably close to what this series might have been.)

Another was a Batman-inspired series, with an Adam West-esque Blackadder.

There was also an idea for a Russian Blackadder series. And about five years ago, a continuation of Blackadder Goes Fourth was floated, with Captain Blackadder in the 1920s or 1930s.

In other words, there's been a lot of thinking about another Blackadder, but no one's actually keen to do it.

And then there was the American Blackadder -- 1775, starring Ryan O'Neal and Adam West. (Read up on it here.)

^Personally, I would have loved to have seen one set in the future: "Spaceadder!"

The second series remains my favorite. Miranda Richardson as Queen Elizabeth is such a hoot. And, y'know, Rowan with a beard...he's actually quite good-looking! (Not that I butter my bread that way, but...)

These days, it's a struggle for me to watch House and think "That's the Prince Regent from Blackadder the Third!"

Another fan of Blackadder here.

The first series is the one I've probably had the least repeat viewings of, but they're all great:)
