How do you rate Black Widow?

People who think the MCU is dying are the same people who tell us that Star Trek Discovery is going to be canceled every year, and they should be taken as seriously.
Don't you know? Discovery has been canceled, but they keep it secret so they don't scare shareholders away. So, to maintain the facade, every year they produce a bogus new season.

Belated thoughts (I saw the film a week ago). Normally, I would have seen it opening weekend if not opening day, but I had to travel cross-country for a wedding, so getting away to see the film immediately wasn't going to happen due to family obligations. But I had it in my mind to support the film by seeing it in the theater. I went to one of the pseudo-IMAX showing at my local Regal.

I enjoyed the film. Was it the best Marvel film? No. Was it a good action thriller? Yes (I mean, we already have much of the backstory for one of the lead characters). Was it a good character piece? Yes (the first half of the film). And it was well worth it for the climatic action sequence in IMAX.

Clearly, the film a lot working against it? Hesitant audiences due to the pandemic, the company that owns the film fighting with the theaters, audiences that don't believe in prequels or seeing the stories of already deceased characters, Ike Perlmutter, etc. I just hope the (perceived) lack of success of this film doesn't hurt Eternals, another character-oriented film that doesn't look nearly as action-oriented as the other MCU films. And I hope it doesn't hurt the chances of other female-led MCU films.

I feel that in regards to that latter point in particular that at least Feige has enough sense to recognize that there are a lot of factors playing for and against the film and realize that this one film shouldn't be the end all of how female-led films within MCU should be judged. And I would maintain that stance even if we weren't dealing with a pandemic and all of the issues that arise from that.

Now, that said, I realize that Feige isn't the only factor in the decision making, but I like to think he's an important enough of one with plenty of clout to back him up to argue against any kneejerk reactions some executives will undoubtedly have, especially regards to the second weekend earnings.

With the $60 mill ion taken in from the Disney+ concurrent release and $80 million for a total of $140 million opening weekend (during a pandemic that is still on many people's minds and is making a resurgence unfortunately); even looking at what happened on week two, the film has hardly had the lowest turning box office of any MCU film, nor is it doing that poorly. We don't know how much revenue Disney is continuing to rake in directly from the Disney+ $30 fees; so I'd say any attempts to claim this film is some sort of financial box office disaster is extremely premature; and not really supported by even the current data.

As always time will tell, But I think all this media coverage of "The death of Disney's MCU..." Based on Black Widows box office performance is just clickbait / an attempt to drum up newspaper and magazine sales online or otherwise.

Yup, agreed on all points.

But that said, this news doesn't help any: Black Widow will become available for digital download on August 10, followed by physical media on September 14.

Feige has dealt with worse. The death of the MCU is (sadly) greatly exaggerated.
Yup, agreed. But I'm also thinking of the dumbass high-ranking executives shitting their pants because they think they know best. And the disingenuous news coverage as noted by Noname Given.

I'm pretty sure there's going to be a lot of selective interpretation of events regarding the future of the MCU that will only have kernels of truth in it. IE, people are saying the because of Black Widow's low Box Office performance Disney and Marvel will be rethinking their approach to movie in coming years are probably correct, but only because all studios are going to be rethinking the entire movie industry in coming years due to the pandemic basically knocking the shit out of theatres and streaming services taking up the slack.

Ticket sales for Space Jam 2 plummeted in its second week as well. I think people just aren't ready to go back to the movies yet. I usually see Marvel movies opening night in the crowded theater and then see them several more times in the following days and weeks. I saw Black Widow at a 10:30 a.m. showing on Monday morning in a near empty theater and will now be waiting for Disney + for future viewings.

Marvel relies on people going to theaters multiple times to see their movies. With the pandemic still going on many people don’t feel comfortable going to see movies more than once.
