How do you rate "Black Panther"?

The film is now a hair's breath behind Titanic after Friday's takes and will pass it sometime today (and probably technically already has).

Some people were tweeting about this a few days ago, wondering if the Saudi government might require some scenes involving women to be edited or deleted. However, there was one tweet from a guy who said he lived there and he wasn't so sure there would be censoring. May be, may not be.

I would think that any movie released in Saudi Arabia after 35 years would draw a crowd, but BP is pretty special, so this should be interesting.

Article is pretty funny re: thoughts on The Emoji Movie. :)
I wondered the same thing about the roles of the women, but on the other hand, all of the of women in the film play such critical parts in the film, that there's no good way to cut it down (which is a testament of the film's strength). I am a bit surprised that Black Panther, a film about revolution and progression, would not only be allowed, but be the first film screened at a movie theater. But then, I was also shocked that they went for The Emoji Movie (what with the shit emojis and all), so what do I know?

Considering that many of the heroic figures of this movie are depicted as worshipping pre-Abrahamic deities...I wonder how well that will go over in the KSA?
Oh, that's an interesting point. Perhaps they don't have a problem with it considering the deities are so "absurd" and comes from a comic book that they don't feel threatened?

Also, some of the gods in that particular franchise actually walk the Earth and hit people with hammers.

Cool.

It'll pass Titanic domestically this weekend.

But people have to check with white folks about these things - can't just be going off making their own calls, right? ;)

As a white guy who is currently working in Western Africa, none of my African associates seem to feel it is racist. It is hugely popular here and many women refer to it as a symbol of female empowerment in an otherwise sexist culture. One of my teachers even did a Black Panther pose for our school yearbook.

Gave it a B-
It’s good but nothing special. Didn’t really bring anything new to the table story or action wise.
I wonder where Cap was?

Chadwick Boseman reprised T'Challa in the "Black Jeopardy!" sketch on Saturday Night Live last night.

The film has dipped to single-digit millions for weekend gross for the first time, on its eighth weekend. It has also officially passed Titanic as third highest grossing film ever, unadjusted.

The film only needs another $32.7 million to pass The Last Jedi worldwide, which I expect it'll reach by the end of its run. It's hard to make an estimate on when that might happen because estimates from each country comes in at different rates.

Also impressive is how the film is not only still outpacing The Avengers at this point, but The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, too.

I wish Box Office Mojo would create a showdown page with Black Panther, Avatar, and The Force Awakens. The pacing between Black Panther and Avatar in particular would be interesting to see side-by-side.

I'm surprised to learn that today is the first time the film has dipped below one million dollars in a single day. I was hoping it would last until this coming weekend before doing it next week. It also dipped a bit lower than both The Avengers and The Force Awakens at this point in the run, although both of them had already gone below the million dollar mark. Before this drop, I was beginning to entertain the idea that the film could reach $700 million but now I'm not so sure.

Trailer for the release, with an emphasis on purple and footage not seen in previous trailers:

On its tenth week, the film is still showing in 1,930 theaters. In comparison, at this point:

The Last Jedi: 351
The Force Awakens: 1,618
Jurassic World: 738
The Avengers: 1,125
Avatar: 2,581
Titanic: 3,006

I wonder if the film will get any kind of bump because of Infinity War. I'm seriously considering watching Black Panther one more time as a lead-in to Infinity War on Thursday evening, although I'm still waiting for my theater to post times online for showings aside from Infinity War.

The film has now grossed $681,084,109 domestically and $1,323,984,109 worldwide, trailing The Last Jedi and The Deathly Hallows, Part 2 by a mere $8.7 and 17.5 million, respectively, for global earnings. Unless it gets a bump from Infinity War, I don't see it going any further than those two films worldwide, nor do I think it'll reach $700 million domestically, but I would love to be proven wrong.

Fun bit of trivia: Black Panther has now earned more money than Iron Man ($318.4 m.), Thor ($181 m.), and The First Avenger ($176.7 m.) combined.

I have never purchased a blu-ray movie or TV show, but I'm seriously thinking of making an exception for BP. The Wakanda tourist adds before and after the nation's "coming out" sound like a hoot.

Thanks for the updates, EMH.

I've largely stopped buy DVDs because so many of the releases are bare bones, trying to force people to buy the blu-Ray (which I have no interest in). If the digital release does have all of these features available, I'll probably get that at least.

Thanks for the updates, EMH.
No problem! A direct result of just how much I loved this film and how it's made such a huge impact.

It's kind of crazy that we've come to the point where one of these movies is still in theaters when the next installment arrives.

I’d guess that in this instance they didn’t anticipate BP having quite this staying power.

Yeah, production studios usually plan at least a 6 month gap between related movies. Though, given the ability of shows like Game of Thrones to produce hours of high production content, we may eventually see a 2-3 month gap as normal for successful movie franchises.

I've waited forever to be able to update this lol. Yes, I need a life...

Black Panther has now moved to #2 all-time superhero movie when the US Domestic Box Office has been adjusted for inflation. I don't know if it has the legs to move to #1 and we'll see but Infinity War may well blow all these numbers away.

Oddball trivia, the film with the next highest adjusted gross over Black Panther is... wait for it... Thunderball. Yes, Thunderball was as big of a phenomenon as Black Panther is.

Code:
                    US Domestic
Black Panther $683,628,489
The Avengers $623,357,910

                    US Domestic (Adjusted for Inflation)
The Avengers $705,769,500
Black Panther $683,628,489
Dark Knight $683,575,000

                    Worldwide (US+Overseas)
The Avengers $1,518,812,988
Avengers: Ultron $1,405,403,694
Black Panther $1,326,910,387

The film got a small boost from Infinity War's premiere in the form of barely decaying from the previous weekend and Friday's take was slightly bigger than the previous Friday. Not bad considering the massive estimated opening Infinity War had. It might just get to $700 million after all, but it'll be close.

I wonder if some people who couldn't get into Infinity War bought tickets for Black Panther.
Possibly, as well as some uber fans like myself who watched it again before seeing Infinity War (and I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one who did that my showing).
