BK Impossible Whopper....

Yeah, I am the same way. I eat meat. And I actually *enjoy* meat. I crave it. But I also love animals, and I could never kill one myself (yes, I am a hypocrite) and I hate the mistreatment of them. So this is causing a lot of conflicting feelings in me. A lot of cognitive dissonance.

So if I could still eat meat but not hurt animals, I would sign right up! I am all gung-ho for tissue culture meat.

I read a lot of scifi, and in some of John Varley's short stories they have meat plants...genetically engineered plants that can grow various types of meat (and eggs...eggplants grow real eggs)...and in a couple of Stephen Baxter stores, there are "cow trees", and they have blood for sap but also make milk, and they grow meat and cheese in bulbs you can pick off without hurting the tree. And the bark can be peeled off to become leather (it grows back.) So maybe that's in our future someday, when people get over their squeamishness over GMO foods...
Exactly! If I could have a pepperoni pizza without having to kill piggies, I would be all for it! When it comes to things like milk and cheese, I actually enjoy almond milk, and almond cheese. Of course, almond farming is heavy on the environment, so I can't win there, either.

I have not tired the Beyond product, but it's made with "pea protein isolate", so I am not surprised that some people notice a pea-like taste and smell. The Beyond "meat" is also only colored with beet juice.

The Impossible burger, which I have had, used to be made with wheat protein, but to make it gluten free they changed to a mix of soy and potato protein. But what really makes the Impossible burger taste closer to real meat, is the addition of heme, which is literally plant based hemoglobin. The iron compound that is in blood. It's also responsible for the "bloody" red juices in rare meat. And it's a large part of what gives red meat it's flavor.

EDITED TO ADD: Impossible foods is currently working on an Impossible Burger 3.0, which will contain a plant-based fat, to give it an even more hamburger like flavor and texture.

I have avoided this because South Park said it tasted like shit but I wouldn't mind mooching a bite if someone offered or I asked. Jason

Which one? The Impossible Burger, or the Beyond Burger?

Because I gather from this thread that they taste quite different from each other.

If anyone has Netflix, there's an episode of their program Explained called "The Future of Meat", and it involves a taste test with kids involving real beef hamburger, Beyond Burger, and Impossible Burger.

Most of the kids seemed to prefer the Impossible Burger even over real beef...but most of them (except like one kid I think) seemed to hate the Beyond Burger.

Maybe if Beyond found some other source protein besides peas, and added some heme, it would taste better.

The Impossible Burger is delicious. I had another BK Impossible whopper the other day (sans mayo), and I got a better taste for it, and I think if they switched all meat to the stuff they use to make the Impossible Burger, it wouldn't bother me one bit.

Look up the effects that cattle farming, especially factory farming, is having on the environment. It may shock you.

No to mention it's barbaric, it's incredible we can turn a blind eye to such cruelty and claim to be civilised at the same time. Especially when we don't need meat.

I've had the Impossible whopper with cheese twice now, and it's really good. I hope they'll soon have them everywhere for the same price so they're real replacements.
