Biggest "Tear-Jerker" Moments in Trek

Captain Clark Terrell

What moments in Star Trek bring tears to your eyes just thinking about them? I've got several. In no particular order...

Voyager Makes Contact With Starfleet Commander in "Pathfinder:" A nice ending to a great episode. Especially liked that Admiral Paris' character was introduced here, too.

The Character Montage/Memories From Deep Space 9:
What a great way to end a series! It was cool- and incredibly moving- to see the most significant moments of DS9's crew replayed as each of them headed off to his or her next assignment. The only downside to the scenes is that there are no images of Terry Farrell due to a legal dispute over the previous use of her voice, but the scenes are otherwise fantastic.

Prime Universe Spock's Appearance in Star Trek (2009): I remember seeing this in the theater and hearing a collective gasp when Leonard Nimoy appeared. I'd known he would be in the film, but seeing him and hearing his voice brought tears to my eyes.

Spock's Return in The Search for Spock: The scenes with McCoy, Saavik, and the entire ordeal of stealing the Enterprise to save Spock were great. The moment that Spock and Kirk stare at each other is the culmination of everything the latter did for his friend. And of course: "Jim. Your name... is Jim."

The Standing Ovation for Kirk at the Khitomer Peace Conference: A nice send-off for one of Starfleet's finest as he's joined by Scotty and Sulu. The TOS films dealt so much the concepts of change and aging. It was nice to know that in the end, Kirk was the same hero he'd always been. Older and slower perhaps, but still as dedicated to duty as the young officer facing the challenge of his first command almost thirty years earlier.

Kirk Exonerated and Demoted to Captain: I talked about this in the movie thread. President Roth's line gets me every time: "James T. Kirk, it is the judgement is this Council that you be reduced in rank... to captain. And that as a consequence of your new rank, you be given the duties for which you have repeatedly demonstrated unswerving ability: the command of a starship."

I always thought the most moving moment in Trek was the end of the Visitor when the alternate Jake dies to save his father and the younger him.

When:

- Spock dies in TWOK.
- Jadzia Dax dies.
- The episode "The Visitor".
- When Kes leaves in "The Gift".
- The episode "What You Leave Behind".

It's funny, the only time Trek ever made me come close to being emotional was during Tasha Yar's funeral at the end of "Skin of Evil". And I don't even like the character.

Yeah, Star Trek has never been very good at tugging the emotional strings. Hell, there are moments of Smallville I found more emotionally trying than anything Trek ever did. And even than isn't anything compared to some of the really emotional powerhouse genre shows (Whedon stuff, B5, etc.). Yikes!

Spock dying
Spock's funeral
The Visitor
The montage and the ending of WYLB
And I think there were one or two moments in ENT that caused a small tear to form.

TOS:

TWOK, we all know which scene!

TNG:

When Data and Lal are saying goodbye. GOD, it KILLS me every time.

The Inner Light for obvious reasons.

Picard's scene with Crusher after he mind melded with Sarek to help him finish one last mission.

Spock's face at the end of Unification.

DS9:

Kira talking about her father after Tekeny Ghemor passed away. My own father is in failing health due to Parkinson's, and today that scene gets me more than it did when I was a teenager. I know how Kira feels now. Growing up sucks.

Just about ANY TIME Odo gets that heartbroken look in his eyes. Doesn't matter what the situation is.

That hug at the end of The Begotten.

The poor baby Changeling...

Kira telling Odo she doesn't care how he looks when he's all sick with the morphogenic virus and Odo saying he doesn't want her to see him die. (So glad he didn't!)

I WILL ALSO ADMIT...I cried for joy when they finally kissed! And that aurora borealis moment in Chimera is another happy tears moment.

VOY:

Neelix forgiving Jetrel at the very end.

The Doctor's holographic family...zomg.

Kes leaving.

The only thing in Trek, and I've seen every episode and movie and least once, that's ever brought a tear to my eye is Spock's death in TWOK. It was just done perfectly, two friends, the love, the loyalty, separated, unable to even touch... Just perfectly done.

Edith Keeler's death in The City on The Edge of Forever, the interactions of Kirk, Spock and McCoy in that scene are the best of the entire series.

When Neelix left.

Nah just kidding.

The Visitor, The Inner Light, Similitude got me too, those are the main ones i remember

I posted these in the "Top 10 Moments..." thread, but some fit here as well.

The destruction of the Enterprise in ST III. (I said "My God" at the exact same moment as Kirk there. My wife whispered, "How did you know he was going to say that?" "I didn't." I told her with tears in my eyes. I actually didn't think they would do it).

Kirk being made Captain again at the end of ST IV. (I was cheering along with the crowd). It was tears of joy here.

Kirk falling upon hearing of David's death in ST III. (Another tear jerking moment for me, and I did not even like David, but I really felt Kirk's pain there).

Kirk's "I lost a brother once..." conversation with Spock at the end of ST V. (Very nicely done scene).

George Kirk's death/Jim Kirk's birth in Star Trek

Kirk's death in Into Darkness (immediately ruined by Spock's "KHAAAAAAN!"

I'm sure Wrath of Khan death scene would have had more of an impact if I hadn't seen Spock alive and well in Star Trek V before seeing it!

DS9, Emissary:

Wormhole Alien (Jennifer): "So you choose to exist here. It is not linear."
Sisko: "No. It's not linear."

Not the biggest, but pretty big to me...

The cast sign-off just before credits rolled in TUC.

The movie was already wrapping up with a final farewell in Kirk's last log entry, already an emotional good-bye.
After the Enterprise sailed off into the sunset, I was expecting the usual "roll credits" ending.

Seeing that unexpected and glorious good-bye from the cast really got to me.

Being on old fart from TOS early days, these folks had been a part of, well, my whole life. That last good-bye to them brought tears.
