Perhaps their first attempt to restore the timeline fails, but creates a new alternate timeline. Hilarity ensues as they recognise the mistake, (sky is green) then take steps to try, try again.

That's exactly what I thought of when the suggestion of different timelines was made!

I don’t think the non-totalitarian future we’re being shown is an alternate one. From the interviews and BTS segments it seems like where the characters are came directly from where we last saw them at the end of the Season 2 finale, and from Terry Matalas’s BTS photos, the Stargazer seems to be continuing into Season 3 as it is here.
I might be wrong, and even if I’m not, and where they are at the beginning isn’t an alternate future, there could still be multiple attempts to correct everything, and/or multiple timelines.
Either way, I’m really looking forward to seeing it unfold over the next few weeks!

Is Soji meeting Deltans? Is Rios actually smoking a cigar on the bridge? Did the Borg Queen create the "subspace anomaly"? Ahh I want to see it now!
Like many have said, it's a big jump from the end of S1 to half of them being in (back in) Starfleet in any capacity.
I do not disagree, but it also has Soji saying that she and Jurati have been ambassadors for the Synths for over a year, and over a year is a lot of time for things to change.
I’m not discounting the possibility it’s an alternate universe at all, but I don’t think it’s what seems to be happening.
Interesting factoid: Picard is now Chancellor of SF Academy, and Patrick Stewart is a former (emeritus) Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield!

From what the trailers have shown, they're on a mission to capture her? Ballsy as fuck, but that's what it seems like to me.
From the preview scene, my guess is the timeline shifts immediately after the Stargazer self-destructs.
I'm guessing she was in the anomaly they're investigating.

I believe so? Especially considering California gave Picard season 2 a $20m tax credit so it probably wasn't even an option to use the Toronto sets.
There's never been any consistency with the self-destructs. Sometimes it requires codes from multiple officers, sometimes just the Captain and XO, even others the Captain can enact it alone.
Every ship Rios serves on has a fast-activating self-destruct system so that a single higher ranking officer can blow it up at a moment's notice.
