Big Brother 17

I've met people who love Survivor and hate Big Brother but never met people who love Big Brother and hate Survivor. Huh. They're really similar shows, just Survivor tends to cast more likable people and in BB the minority has more power. Last two seasons BB did a good job casting but before that it's usually had terrible casting.
...
If I were to rank victory preference right now.

1. Vanessa
2. Liz
3. Steve
4. Austin
5. Julia
6. John
Both shows are social experiments, but my take is that while Survivor is more physically grueling, anyone who lasts the full time in the Big Brother house is going to need serious mental therapy after being locked up in such an artificial setting for 3 months with all those people, with absolutely everything they do and say being fair game for public broadcast (the only thing that's seemingly not on display is certain bathroom matters; they're even shown taking showers).

At least now they provide more mental stimulation in the Big Brother house - no more special competitions to see if they get any fitness equipment or permission to use the swimming pool. And they're provided with a chess set and, if I'm not mistaken, a copy of the Bible (saw somebody reading one a few seasons back).

Given a choice between the two, I'm not sure which I'd choose (assuming I was 30 years younger and much healthier). Some of the night sky views from those Survivor locations must be amazing, so southern hemisphere stargazing would be a powerful inducement for me. But of course the flip side is that while I grew up in a time when not everyone I knew had indoor plumbing and running water (when we went to our summer cabin for holidays, that was the case, not to mention no electricity; any light at night was provided by a coal oil lamp), I've since become accustomed to city comforts.

But if I had the chance to do the Amazing Race, I'd grab it.

On the issue of who should win this season, I think Vanessa should. Regardless of her penchant for throwing crying tantrums, the fact is that she engineered every single ouster, and when it looked like her time was up, she pulled out enough reasons for people to keep her there. She hasn't coasted or floated, and I think she's been as loyal to her allies as she's been able to, under the circumstances. The only real things about her that annoy me are these:

1. The phrase "blood on my hands." Somebody should go back and count how many times she's said that; it's a dumb phrase to use in this game and it's been overused to a ridiculous extent. Vanessa: Nobody is being physically attacked this season!

2. Those silly hats. What is up with those toques she wears? Is the air conditioning turned up that much that she's cold and has to keep her ears warm?

3. Are those suspenders she has hanging around her knees? If she's not going to wear them properly, why wear them at all? She looks ridiculous.

I can't stand Survivor and its artificiality, whereas Big Brother at least has the transparency of the feeds to get around any accusations of creative editing. (There is still some artifice in its casting and in the setting itself, but it doesn't pretend to be in a "real" house the way Survivor pretends its casts are actually isolated from the rest of the world.)
At least Survivor actually happens outside. On Big Brother, I can't actually tell if the "back yard" is really outside or if it's just another room in the building that's lit to look like outside. The grass isn't real, the weather is always perfect, and nobody seems to spend any time there after dark.

Oh, and when they showed the Moon on Thursday, the phase was wrong. It was a half-moon on Thursday, not a full one.

I like them both but I like Survivor better. I agree that it's easier for people to learn 'The real story' with BB because they have less control over what people see. But in my opinion, BB had good casting this year and the previous one, but before that usually had terrible casting. Survivor has median age in the mid thirties and BB has median age in mid twenties, and BB tends to have more superficial, more openly hateful people. (Although some of that may be editing. On BB Hayden seemed superficial and hateful and on Survivor seemed like a cool guy.)
Unless someone stands out right away, I don't even bother trying to remember peoples' names for at least the first couple of weeks. Same with Survivor. I think they were down to the final 8 or so this time before I could finally be bothered.

Contrast this with the very first season of Survivor. I still remember most of that cast, even the ones voted out in the first few weeks.

There have been plenty of Big Brother seasons I've missed either because I forgot or just plain didn't like the people on it, but I've seen most of the Survivor seasons. Next to the first one, my favorite is the pirate-themed one that was Rupert's first time playing.

I think Big Brother finally learned what makes the show work and what makes it unbearable, and only because they were forced to by a racism scandal.
What happened? I never heard about this.

Survivor IMO also tends to create more interesting strategic plays with the hidden immunity idols. More surprises and reversals at the last minute because at TC everyone is vulnerable and anyone could have an idol.
I still snicker over that smug idiot James, so sure that he was safe that he got voted out with TWO immunity idols in his pocket!

My father refuses to even watch BB anymore because of how much he hates the Chenbot.
They should switch up the hosts. Phil had his few minutes of hosting Big Brother, so they should switch Jeff Probst with Julie Chen. Let him prance and glide around the studio, and let her actually get her hair and clothes and hands dirty in the outdoors. Kinda hard to sashay around a beach or diving platform in high heels and designer dresses.

The racist season was Big Brother 15, with Aaryn, Amanda, McCray, Gina Marie, the ginger-bearded guy, etc.

They tormented Helen by mocking her for being Asian. Homophobic slurs were commonplace. It actually made national news in the States. People booed houseguests as they were evicted and Julie Chen confronted them each in their exit interviews.

When asked about the numerous racist statements she made, Aaryn pathetically denied ever saying them.

Many of the houseguests that season lost their jobs in real life over what they said on the show. The ginger-beard guy kept his job only through union intervention, but his employer was talking to the police about having him investigated over something he said.

I've never seen such a large group of ignorant a-holes on Big Brother before or since.

Yikes. I'm glad I missed that one.

If I had to pick one of the three shows to appear on it'd be Amazing Race. I definitely wouldn't want to be in Big Brother because it's the longest time commitment. (Plus I'm 32 so I'd be the oldest one there.) Survivor, I don't know. I have to admit I sometimes daydream about being in the game in various situations, I would love to play it. I just don't know if I want the muscle loss from being on the rice and beans diet for over a month.

Really Liz, you can't handle being on the block? You're going after Steve for putting you and your "boo" on the block? You can't even sit at the table through nominations? At least Austin, dumb as he is, understands it's a numbers game. I can't wait to see her go out the door on Thursday.

Yep. After tonight, I'm hoping for Vanessa, Steve, or John to win.

As for Liz's "boo"... I'm wondering if she meant "beau" and is just clueless about how to pronounce it?

Based on the Sigmund & Freud discussion in last night's episode, she could possibly mean "beau," but I think it's likely she meant the urban dictionary definition of "boo."

I am rooting for John. He was the funniest houseguest this season, and it makes for a good comeback story.

John had the twins' number all through that "suddenly-we're-soooo-into-Steve-and-we-just-turned-into-dumb-dyed-hair-blondes" act they put on. That was so utterly pathetic, it was disgusting. And it killed whatever remaining bit of good will I had toward those two.

They must have thought Steve was monumentally stupid.

The only thing I don't like about John is his laugh. I wonder how his co-workers and patients put up with it?

For me to root for John to win he'd have to do something, ever, in the entire game, that proactively gets him further. So far he seems to have made two good strategic decisions the entire game. 1) Not complain when he's asked to be a pawn, and 2) Ally with Vanessa.

He also won some comps and had a good enough social game to avoid getting voted out several times being on the block.

Actually, he did a considerable amount of complaining when asked to be a pawn - he just kept it in the Diary Room, where nobody else could hear him.

That was wise of him. His complaining behind closed doors was comedic though.

Was anyone else confused as to why the twins thought they were totally safe with Steve as HOH? It's the top 6, and they have a three vote bloc. It's purely a numbers game at this point. Even Austin is starting to warm up to a twin going out. That they didn't see that is further evidence, IMO, that they're not really playing a good game. They've won comps at key times since the stronger players all exited, but there's not much real strategy going on. If they'd really been thinking, they would have kept James and taken out John or Vanessa.

Not that I'm complaining. Vanessa's game is sitting about as good as it possibly could at this point. Even if the Austwins win the veto, she might not be their primary target.

I've been back and forth throughout the season, but I'm now 100% Team Vanessa. It really is remarkable how much game she's played, and how many close calls she's survived.

I think they developed a false sense of security from running the house for so long.

1. They thought that Steve was still loyal to the "Scamper Squad".

2. In case the above might no longer be true, they made that blatant, completely over-the-top attempt at flattering him during the "who wants to see my HoH room" segment, in the expectation that this quiet, socially-awkward human just couldn't possibly put up either of the pretty, pretty girls ('cause they, like, totally paid attention to him, and he wouldn't be used to that, right?).

And while that was going on, John was sitting there, mentally eating popcorn, seeing right through everything. :D

Not to mention their horribly condescending questions to Steve in the kitchen. "Have you ever, like, been in loooove?" "Was it unrequited?" "Is your mommy the only female to ever, like, loooove you?"

That was just so damn condescending. I hope both the twins go out next, one after the other. They had no call to put on that disgusting performance.

Wow. Did Vanessa just get Austin to eliminate the one person who he needed to win to protect his alliance this week?
