Big Brother 17

Wow. Did Vanessa just get Austin to eliminate the one person who he needed to win to protect his alliance this week?

#Danessa

That was unbelievable. Plus, she has come out of it on the other side looking like the good guy. If Vanessa gets to the final two, she deserves to win.

Is she that smart or are the twins that stupid?

Regardless of who is smart or stupid, Vanessa deserves credit for taking a big risk and having it pay off.

Call me crazy, but I preferred Derrick's game from last year. He played it silently and no one had a clue he was behind it.

Vanessa has been target number one for weeks and has survived, I feel, because she was part of a power block, who were more concerned with removing lesser players, her constant commentary of "I'll say everything" with tears, while saying nothing, and because she has pretty much got Steve tucked in her back pocket.

Derrick is best Big Brother player all time, hands down. There were double nominations and he didn't get nominated once. Only other player ever to not get nominated once is Drew.

But Vanessa was the only player who showed up this year. And per playing style is very similar to Dan's. The twins are her Danielle. I guess if that analogy holds up Steve will win this season.

Yes, and yes.

Vanessa is a smart player. She mentioned last episode about staying unemotional when something good happens, so her opponents don't know what a poker hand she has.

And the twins need to realize that if Vanessa hadn't figured out how to put together this alliance that's held together for so many weeks, they wouldn't have made it anywhere near this far. The only reason they were allowed to stay is because they were a guaranteed two-person voting bloc.

While Liz has won competitions, the fact is that overall the twins have been coasters, allowed to stay because of the decisions and persuasions of better players.

And Austin sounds like he's about ready to audition for a soap opera, the way he was carrying on. Wow. "I ruined my life for you!" What a prince.

OMG I couldn't stop laughing! She is SO good. Played on the moment, Julia's gullibility, and totally turned that veto contest in her favor. In one subtle swoop, completely destroyed the Austwins alliance. The single most incredible thing I've ever seen on this show. Wow.

Okay, so at this point, if you're Vanessa, who do you want to be sitting next to in the final two? Because that has to determine who she allies herself with next week. Julia seems the obvious choice, but she won't be any help getting there. I feel like John is the biggest threat to Vanessa in terms of jury votes.

(Oh, and I love that hashtag!)

Steve would be the best choice. A jury voting with its emotions isn't going to vote for Steve because he wasn't especially close to any of them. And a jury that's inclined to reward strategy won't vote for Steve either, because this week is the first time he demonstrated any kind of real strategy.

Steve's a nice guy, but he's been a coaster who, I suspect, has been allowed to stay precisely because stronger players don't think he'd pick up any jury votes.

I don't know, I think a Vanessa/Steve final would have Dan/Ian comparisons. I think her best final two vote is against Austin. Austin thinks he played a crushing strategic game and he's going to act like an entitled ass in answering questions.

A Vanessa/Johnny Mac final two is a guaranteed win for Vanessa. Johnny Mac has no "blood on his hands" (that metaphor...ugh) while Vanessa can argue her role in most evictions pretty effectively.

That was a great game moment when Julia said in a whining voice, "I don't know. Vanessa told me I should pick Austin." Vanessa joined the ranks of Dan and Derrick in that one brilliant stroke. I wish they had shown it...

I don't know. I think Johnny Mac has played the only kind of floater game I can respect. While he wasn't ever really the strategy setter, he was integral to various strategies throughout the season. Think about the comps he threw in the beginning to put various plans into motion. I guess even though he has never been in charge, I feel like he's been present and playing the game throughout. I worry that the jury, feeling personal animosity towards Vanessa, might feel he played enough to get their votes.

^^ John was a part of everyone's plans at one point or another, unfortunately the majority of it happened pre-jury and really the only current jury member that may feel indebted to him on that level would be Shelli.

Vanessa wins this if she is sitting next to any of them at the end. The best plan for either side (Austin and whichever twin remains & Steve/John) would be to keep her for one more week and then cut her at final four. Hopefully, they all figure it out.

John was fun to watch but he never once influenced anyone to do anything. He astutely observed things that were going on but was never able to do anything about it.

It does seem like Vanessa is in a position where if she doesn't win HOH-Veto-HOH nobody will willingly bring her to final two. She might be able to rig something up so next week's veto holder has a duo to be afraid of. She just has to convince everyone that if she wins final HoH she takes them.

What Dan did his first season was annoy people just enough to make people think they can beat him but not so much that he couldn't fix it in the goodbye message. If she can build John and Steve up as the lovable guys vs the crier maybe she can pull that off.

So. Liz as a redhead, and Vanessa wearing a purple mop. Were they really surrounded by that many regular people that they needed to be disguised?

^ I think it's just an obvious precaution. Drivers, ticket handlers, concession folks, etc. Don't want anyone spoiling the game by sharing what they'd seen on TV.

What does everyone think about Vanessa's nominations? I'm kind of at a loss. Tough spot she's in right now. I think Jirin is right, she can't rely on anyone taking her to final two at this point, she's too big a threat. She'll have to win her way there. Given that, I'd just be playing to take out the biggest threats with the jury votes. And based on competitions, that's Liz, isn't it?

Vanessa's damned no matter which way she goes.

Her biggest physical threat is, of course, Austin. Unless it's something like one of those 'precarious balance on some tiny perch' thing that favors smaller people; in that case, she or Liz would have the better chance.

In a mental challenge, her biggest threats would be either Liz or Steve.

John seems capable in a veto competition, but for some reason he either chokes or messes up somehow in the HoH.

OTOH, if it's down to 3 and she's not the one deciding who to take, the other person might decide to take her precisely because she had a hand in everyone else's eviction and they might be counting on them not voting for her because of that. But Steve would tell them that hey, she may not be a nice person, but she's played a hell of a game, and it's the gameplay that should be rewarded.

Now you can't count out the power of charisma. The only two people left who have any are Vanessa and Austin. Liz by herself is basically a nonentity, John's laugh is profoundly annoying, and Steve might as well be invisible.

The combinations that I think least deserve the final two would be:

1. Liz and John. Liz would have been booted weeks ago if not for the "twin twist" and John has floated and cooperated his way through the game (granted, he won several veto competitions and saved himself), and is still in it only because of the second-chance twist.

2. Liz and Austin. As mentioned, Liz was kept only for the twin twist, and Austin hasn't made many independent decisions. Most of the choices he's made have been after discussing everything to death with Vanessa, and she factors into all of his decisions anyway.

I think Vanessa turning on John and Steve was a mistake. She can beat either one of those two in the finale for certain, but Liz and maybe Austin would be better competition for the half a million dollars based on their game play.

I think Vanessa made the right move for herself though I agree the odds of her surviving without winning competitions isn't great anyway. I think Vanessa's greatest final two risk is Steve's adorable factor. That's why Vanessa wanted John out, so Austin would be more likely to take her to the final three with Steve as the other option.

Also I think, if John or Steve goes and Austin and Liz have power next cycle, Austin and Liz have been allied with Vanessa since the beginning and even after what she did last week will have more residual loyalty than Steve and John.

Thing is, both John and Steve think they're just a pawn and the other one is the target, or that neither is the target and Vanessa's counting on either herself or one of them to win the veto so she can backdoor Austin or Liz (and since they're the only options, she can excuse her choice by saying, "sorry, there's literally nobody else, it has to be one of you").

So her actual target may very well be Austin or Liz, and she's taking a hell of a gamble that neither of them will win the veto (since obviously neither would use it).

I was thinking about it last night, and wondered if it would have been smarter to nominate one person from each pair. I mean it doesn't really matter to Vanessa which pair survives this week. She's in a pickle either way. So why make enemies? By nominating one each, she can sort of step back and let them fight it out, claiming neutrality. Or, with the veto, she could make a real move and pick a pair to target at that point.

The thing with that, is she'd have both sides mad at her, and the half of the pair who wasn't nominated/evicted would be out for revenge.

Better to have just one person after you at this point than two (or three).
