Big Brother 16: Gentlemen, commence your appallingness!

If you're a cocky homophobic douche, yes. ;)

We're going to have to sit through this again next year with Brenchel, aren't we?

CBS does seem to be obsessed with Jeff/Jordan, Brenchel, and that idiot "Mr. Pecs" Jesse. I would be surprised if their combined IQ reached double digits.

I feel sorry for Jordan's future children.

Rob & Amber certainly ate up the exposure CBS gave them, but once they had children, Amber had the decency not to let CBS shove cameras in their faces (Save for in the audience of the Survivor reunion show). I'm not sure Jordan or Rachel have the same decency.

Okay, Frankie is just disgusting, and Victoria must not have packed her brain when she originally came on the show.

I want Derrick to win. He's the least obnoxious of the bunch.

So, the rewind happened. And now ...

Frankie is no longer HoH. Caleb is. And the Feeders say he's been waffling back and forth, whether he wants to put up Victoria and Cody, or Victoria and Frankie.

Whoever it is, someone is leaving on Sunday's live episode, and then a second eviction will be next Wednesday.

If any of them want a chance at winning, they need to get rid of Frankie. He's been too good at the competitions. I hope Derrick wins.

Anyone care to speculate that next year's show will feature Jeff & Jordan's wedding? :vulcan:

Year after that, Jordan goes into labor and the paramedics rush her to the Big Brother house!

Then year after that, Jordan Jr and Rachel Jr fight to the death!

And year after that, the winner becomes the first two year old cast member ever, and there's huge controversy when he repeats something Jeff said about how Dumbledore shouldn't be allowed around children if he's gay. Twitter is abuzz, 'Homophobic toddler expelled from preschool over remarks'.

The only person in the house right now I personally dislike is Victoria. I think in general there was a really strong cast this season, it's just a shame there was such a huge gap in gameplay skill between a handful of people and everyone else.

Did I hear that ad correctly? Did they really put John Rocker in the Survivor cast? The year after Big Brother took racism heat they cast a person most famous for racist and homophobic remarks?! What, did they hire the Celebrity Apprentice casting director?

Didn't Survivor used to at least try to be more classy than other reality shows?

Yes. I see that Natalie & Nadiya from The Amazing Race are in the cast. They're strong women and not afraid of "icky" things, so they should do fine at challenges. As long as they don't yell "Twinnie!" they have a good chance at this.

Do we want to start a general "Reality game show" thread instead of making new threads for every season? It seems like most of the same people post in the Survivor, Big Brother and Voice threads.

Natalie and Nadiya are a good choice for casting. You know why? For one, they never had a famous interview with Sports Illustrated where they made racist, homophobic, and anti-immigrant comments. That, in my opinion, should be a minimum qualification to be on the show.

That's a good idea, except it would make more sense to me to have a reality game show sub-forum. There are so many shows now, that just having a single thread would make it confusing and frustrating to follow some conversations. For example, I've never heard of Voice, and I've yet to see anyone post about The Quest, which is a terrific show.

A sub-forum could have a dedicated thread for each show, with the understanding that some overlap might occur with the veteran CBS ones that have been around so many years and sometimes have the same cast members.

I thought about watching The Quest, I guess I didn't just because I just don't watch anything on ABC so I wasn't exposed to the ads to be aware enough of it. What's the format?

If we don't want to use one thread to cover all reality shows, how about just one that encompasses Survivor and Big Brother?

The Quest is partly a scripted fantasy show and part reality show with contestants that do challenges and one person is eliminated in each episode. However, it's the most civilized example of this genre I've ever seen; even The Amazing Race has more negativity.

According to ABC: "The Executive Producer of The Lord of the Rings has joined forces with the creators and producers of The Amazing Race to conjure a land of magic and malevolence, where mythical creatures lurk in the woods. For 12 lucky souls, a fantastic world will come alive in a unique competition series where players will engage in epic challenges."

According to The Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/valerie-tejeda/the_quest-_b_5626094.html

The premise is that the land of Everealm is about to be completely conquered by a really evil warlord named Verlox. Eleven kingdoms have already fallen, and the last one standing has put out a call for 12 paladins (the contestants) to train in the arts of war, observation, intelligence, and so on, to become the One True Hero who can wield the Sun Spear and defeat the enemy. The contests have included horsemanship, archery, combat with sword and shield, other kinds of target practice, using siege engines, escaping from captivity, building barricades, observation of the enemy's movements, finding hidden objects, assembling and using equipment, and so on.

The non-contestants are characters played by actors. There's the Queen, the Vizier, Crio (who's a kind of liaison between the paladins and the others, and who escorts the paladins to and from the Fate Challenges), Sir Ansgar (who trains the paladins and administers the main challenges), and the Fates (three mystical women who preside over the final challenge of each episode to determine which paladins get a second chance to continue the quest to be the one true hero, and which paladin is to be banished [eliminated]). The paladins who end up doing the Fate Challenges are the ones who perform the worst at the earlier challenge that's presided over by Ansgar.

The show was filmed in Austria, at a castle and in the surrounding fields and forest. It's very nice scenery there. There is very little discussion of the modern 21st century among the paladins, and none at all from the non-contestants (because they're not from our world, of course). Essentially the 21st century intrudes very little, and what with the amazing job the producers have done to make the castle look like a fully-functional medieval-style castle, complete with servants and other workers, merchants, and even a few children, it's easy to just get into the story. At some point I did find myself cheering on one or another of the paladins, and hoping they'd win in the end. As far as I know, they're not competing for anything as crass as real-world money, just the honor of being the hero who will save the kingdom from Verlox.

American viewers can watch the episodes here. But don't wait too long; most of them will be available for less than a week. And if you do watch the whole series, please don't spoil it for those who haven't seen all of it, since it's not all available to Canadian viewers yet (I can't watch on the ABC site).

As to the thread you propose, I'd add in The Amazing Race, since they're all on CBS and have often shared cast members.

What's the elimination criteria? One important aspect of these sorts of shows for me that can be a deal breaker is if the eliminations don't have some semblance of fairness. Like, a couple years ago there was this 'Ultimate video game player' reality show, only it was clearly not fair because it all came down to arbitrarily chosen duels at the end where things could happen like the sports game expert being knocked out because he wasn't good at Guitar Hero. Does it feel like the people who made it to the end are convincingly the best at the game?

Keep in mind that these competitions take place as part of an overall scripted story and are part of it. That said, the competitions themselves are not scripted; the winner is not predetermined in any way.

For example, one of the competitions last week was between two teams of three people (by this time there were only 6 people left of the original 12). The competition involved finding the correct flags amidst a basket of similarly-colored and patterned flags and tying them in their correct places on a pole that would then be hoisted up so as to send a message to distant soldiers concerning the enemy's movements. The team leaders were chosen by drawing lots, and they then chose who they wanted on their teams. It ended up that one team was all female and the other was all male. That didn't matter in this instance, since it was a competition that relied on observation, not strength.

Sir Ansgar (one of the characters played by an actor) is the one who trains the paladins and administers their tests. In this case, he was the one who told them whether or not they'd found the correct signal flags and put them in the correct order (each flag corresponded to a word and if all the flags were correct they would spell out a sentence pertaining to the enemy's movements). It was a close finish by the men's team; the women's team could have won, except one of them got confused between pentagons and octagons.

Since the women's team lost, they're the ones who had to participate in the Fates' Challenge. This is one additional test that the losers of the first one have to take in order to be allowed to continue their quest. The winner of this test gets to continue. The others have to wait to see who among the remaining non-banished paladins will vote for them to stay. They have to stand in front of the Fates while their fellow paladins go outside for a few minutes to discuss the merits of each person and what they did or did not accomplish and how they handled themselves. There's very little negativity in these discussions; nobody seems bitter or mean. Then Crio comes and escorts them back in where they are directed to "stand behind the paladin you think should continue the quest." One by one, they stand behind the person they choose, and when that's done, the Fates tell the two paladins to "turn around." The paladin who has the most people standing behind them gets to continue. The other one is banished. Only once was there a case where the losing paladin had zero supporters, nor have there ever been ties.

The tests/challenges are fair; all of the contestants have a decent chance of winning. Some of the tests administered by Sir Ansgar are team challenges and some are individual, but the Fate Challenges are always individual.

The Fates' Challenge they'd had to do involved being taken out into the forest, and climbing a tree to spy on the enemy's movements. Again, it was a test of observation, but this time they had to memorize the details of the enemy - how many there were, what weapons they had and how many of each, what kind of armor they had, what their heraldic devices were, and so on. This was done at night, btw. After they were given time to observe and memorize, they were taken to Sir Ansgar, who asked them questions. This was done one by one, so none of them knew what the others were asked or who got how many questions right. They only found out after Crio escorted them back to the Fates and revealed who got the most correct answers. As it turned out, one got more than the other two, so they then had to wait to see how the other paladins voted.

I think that for the most part the best person does win, although I have to admit that I was disappointed with how last week's vote turned out. I'd expected a different outcome, and my favorite isn't there anymore.

I'm more interested that the methods to determine elimination pertain to a general skill set instead of just some random different thing every week. Maybe I'll check out the first episode.

Apparently, they've cut the live feeds for the year. They're doing "best of" feeds through the finale next week. But, somebody slipped up and there were 4-5 minutes of feeds that went out, which show ...

Frankie's out of the house. Derrick is HoH. Victoria is nominated. Who is with her ... was not shown.

After about 39 weeks in a row of being on the block, I think it would be a hoot for Victoria to pull out and win this thing.

Each competition does test a general skill set. They just vary it. Last week it was observation and memorization, both very valuable skills for medieval-era (or any era, really) soldiers to have. And the tests follow the overall story in a logical way.

That would be hilarious.

As for the spoiler, I don't see how that could be a normal thing, since aren't evictions supposed to be live?
