Best/Worst-looking alien makeup in all of Trek

I was getting into sci-fi as early as 1959. So to my 15 year old eyes in 1966, Spock was the worst looking alien I'd ever seen.

Based on what? Design? Application? How it looks on screen? It's not all that different than what we've seen in previous Klingon makeups.
All of the above really, they just didn't work for me. Along with the question of why they are now bald, decorate themselves with excessive jewellery, and have bumpy foreheads during that timeframe--things in the Alternate Timeline changed upon Nero's arrival, so how are they affected so drastically (unless due to non-interference from someone on the Kelvin the Klingons decided to go a new route with fashion).

Saying "they're now bald" as if every single Klingon now is, when we saw one bald Klingon, and others in the group had visible hair...

Klingons just look wrong bald, even more so when lacking all facial hair.

Was he half-Romulan as well? Can't think of why else he'd have pointed ears.

Sarjenka from TNG's "Pen Pals" is always at the top of my list for the worst.

Oh, yes, that's a bad one. Just all-around irritating in some way: the sorta-not-quite-leonine face and the elongated fingers. I give them points for at least trying for some originality with the fingers, but it didn't work. Maybe it was that girl's voice, too, the pitifulness of it was like nails on a chalkboard.

Btw I see earlier I mentioned CGI, sorry about that OP, guess I brainfarted.

So for best, I go with Sylvia and Korob--just kidding!!--I go with the Cardassians. They just look like they could be real for me more than any others. That may say something about the limits of my imagination, but it also may say something about how good the Cardassian makeup was.

Rethought my worst and it's Armus. Be careful, don't slip on the villain!

heh heh. He said Blingon.

He at least had a mo and also a little hair.
I see the mo, but what hair Bry? Guy could nearly give Prof. X a run for the money on the cue-ball index. That Klingon ridge actually accentuates the nakedness of his dome, like a mid-oceanic mountain range or stitches on a repackaged autopsy.

I think Chang is unique in having a human skull with such faint ridges. He doesn't fit into either the TOS or classic movie look. There's no way Worf, Gorkon or any of the other pie-headed Klingons of the classic movies or TNG/DS9 would look so 'normal' without hair. Imagine bald Lursa or B'Etor!:rommie:

He had a small ponytail attached to the back of his head that is not visible in this image.

The pig masks on the tellarites in Journey to Babel always looked terrible to me. When the tellarites reappeared in season three the make-up was much improved.

For best, there are dozens of examples in the Abrams movies. They had more money to go around and it shows (there's a reason it won an Oscar).

WHy can they or a group of them wear jewelry? We've seen a variation in accessories.

The bumpy and smooth Klingons co-exist in this time frame. The Augment virus didn't infect every Klingon.

The first Klingons ever seen on Star Trek had no beards

The Klingons have sported a variety of looks over the years. Some with long hair, some with short hair and some bald or with just a fringe of hair.

What was it about Spock that you didn't like? The ears?

At that time, I was used to aliens looking like those seen on the original Twilight Zone and Outer Limits, with some complex full head makeups. Two years after OL, Spock shows up looking like a human with painted eyebrows and the ears. The ears were fine. From background I'd read over the years, when Fred Phillips had to do David McCallum's hyper-evolved man in the OL: The Sixth Finger episode, he got in touch with John Chambers, who had been perfecting a foam rubber mold process. Phillips may have consulted him again for Spock's ears. Chambers of course later did the makeups for the original Planet of the Apes. Some of the more complicated makeups on Twilight Zone were by William Tuttle, who did 7 Faces of Dr. Lao.

How incredibly bad-assed, having his eye patch riveted into place! :techman:

Not only that- the screw heads had tiny Klingon symbols on them and one of them is not tight (Chang had a screw loose...)

My favorites are Sylvia and Korob from 'Catspaw' and the second appearence of Q as a three-headed Aldebaran serpent in 'Hide and Q'. Totally alien concepts.

Worst is ANY bumpy headed makeup from TNG/DS9/ST-V/E, - it just does not work for me.

Part of the reason for Chang's appearance is after the appliances were in place, Christopher Plummer decided that was the look he wanted, and didn't want the wig they'd prepared and hadn't put on him yet.

I think the only reason the ponytail is there is to hide a seam.

Also since ST6 was filmed during TNG you would think that the Klingons and that Romulan would have the same type of makeup.

I personally like the Borg, the Jem Haddar, ENT Andorians, ENT Xindi Reptillians.

Worst for me were an infinite number of funny forehead multi nostrilled bad dudes from mostly Voyager.
Bajorans were also a pain in the arse with their silly ear decorations.
