Best Buy has B5 seasons on sale for $20!

I still need the television movies set (well, I have the original DVD release of The Gathering/In the Beginning), Legend of the Rangers and Crusade (if I can get my hands on it, I'd want one of the ones with JMS's commentary on it tbat were evidently pulled).

Not pulled, the agreement was that any pressings after the first would not have the edited commentary on them. Somebody recently reported getting a new set that still had it so either it was a really huge first pressing or WB never made the change.

AFAIK, there are no records that still have JMS' UNedited commentary telling what happened to Crusade.

Or they just happened to find an old copy; the copy my local library owns doesn't have the commentary.

Thanks, that's good to know. I think you're the first person to mention seeing a set without it.

I know my sets have the commentaries.

One of these days I'm going to have to host a marathon where we listen to all of those, expecially the cast commentaries. "That's MISTER Morden to you."

I should probably listen to the cast commentaries again. I'm afraid that the first time around I tended to get annoyed, mostly with Jerry Doyle yelling "Flounder!" whenever Vir/Stephen Furst would appear on the screen. Also discussions about eyebrows and dents in Jerry's head didn't amuse me. I preferred the more informative commentaries.

I've always felt that with the B5 commentaries, you listen to jms' for the informative aspects. However, you listen to the cast commentaries for their entertainment value.

Thanks for the heads-up. I've always wanted to get a chance to watch the entire series on DVD. I went ahead and placed the order on-line; will pick up at Best Buy tomorrow. ;)

(unlike ST:TNG which will *never* see a hi-def release since it was shot on video)

TNG was shot on 35mm film. however it was edited and the effects were composited on video.

Trek is a much bigger cash-cow than B5, I'm certain that one day down the road we'll see it in HD. Especially if the new movie re-invigorates the franchise.

I stand corrected then! I seem to recall reading that somewhere, but I guess that source was wrong.

I saw the DVDs for 18.99 at Costco just two days ago (but, again, only the five seasons).

The best you'll do with the movies box set is wait until Deep Discount has their annual sale, and then pick it up for about 30.00. Which is still too much, in my opinion, for the content being offered, but oh well. At least each movie has a commentary and a short featurette. Imagine if WB had done that for every episode (they certainly must have the interview footage, judging from what can only be described as snippets in the "introductions" to each season).

I'll have to try checking out another BB, the one just down the road from us didn't have any B5 in stock, as I was ready to pick up Season 2 and continue watching. Hopefully, they'll continue to run this for a spell.

So we're about to buy an HDTV tomorrow (hopefully), so after seeing the DVDs on our standard definition set for so long I'll have to get accustomed to the CGI/aspect ratio issues. Do you any of you with HDTVs find the problems to be very distracting or is it more of a minor annoyance? I popped an episode into my iMac (which isn't high-def, but still digital) and found it to be passable, though I noticed the fuzziness more.

Yeah, I noticed that fuzziness... but it didn't get to me, because I'm already so deeply infected. :D

Same here. Though I don't like to judge people I've never met, I think Jerry is the kind of bloke I'd probably headbutt after a few minutes of irritating conversation.

As for JMS, if he REALLY wants to get the real story out there, I don't think there's anything (aside from his schedule) to prevent him from posting his own podcasts that people can synch up to the episodes.

Did I miss something or was ITB supposed to have a commentary too? I know my (R2) copy doesn't have one, though I'm sure I've heard one mentioned somewhere before.

I find it to be greatly annoying. The series, as it has been released on DVD now, is designed to be watched on a 4:3 standard definition television, even though it is in widescreen. But your mileage may vary.

Update: As it turned out, none of the Best Buy stores in the area currently have them in stock, so the DVDs are being shipped to me directly (at no additional charge).
