BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUICE (2024)

From Bloody Disgusting.

We've got an official title, poster, and release date of 9/6/2024 for the Beetlejuice sequel.

I'm still not sold on the need for it, but I'm looking forward to watching. Even if it's a train wreck, I hope it's an interesting one. And Keaton is always enjoyable.

Damn, I was hoping for a trailer, but at least we have a title and release date!

I agree on the necessity of a sequel but it'll be worth the adventure with Keaton, Ryder, and O'Hara all returning. And that's before you get to new cast members Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, and Monica Bellucci.

It's nice to get an official title and release date. I'm cautiously optimistic, I usually like Tim Burton's stuff and it's a great cast, both returning and new.

Given the timing, I wonder if we're getting one during the Super Bowl.

Oh, I disagree. In some aspects, at least, it's one of the most influential movies of my lifetime.

That doesn't make it 'needed'. If it had never been made, something else would've had that influence and no one would've ever known what we were missing.

The first was a lot of fun, so I'll watch the sequel when it hits streaming services. I wouldn't say the first was influential though. I honestly couldn't name one movie I've watched since that had any kind of tip of the hat to it.

Well, it was influential in that ITS success led to Tim Burton getting to direct Batman, and that one was influential. I was gonna say it started Winona Ryder's career, but then she had starred in Squaredance with Rob Lowe and Jason Robards the previous year, had already filmed 1969 opposite RDJ and Kiefer Sutherland and been cast in Heathers by the time of Beetlejuice was released, so she already was having a good career. Beetlejuice boosted her career, though.

It's influential mostly in terms of aesthetic. It was the first to really give us Burton's look, which all sorts of artists in film and other media have spun off into their own things.

It's sort of influential in the same way that Die Hard was to action movies. A lot of ideas can be traced back to it. In the case of Beetlejuice, that mostly comes down to appearances. It's hard to explain to a modern viewer just how unique that movie looked at the time, because so many things in media have springboarded from it.

Just so that I know how to argue against the idea, first I need to know what the definition of a "needed" movie is, with examples.

Regardless, I'm excited for this one.

Peewee's Big Adventure? You could see his style emerging even there, and you could see he really ran with it. But in terms of aesthetics, I think Edward Scissorhands solidified it in my eyes.

I think the last Tim Burton movie I've really enjoyed was Big Eyes.
