Be Forever Yamato REBEL 3199

I resubscribed to Crunchyroll and I'm all caught up on Yamato now. They have the recap film of the first two seasons, which was handy for reminding me of stuff before moving on to seasons 3 & 4.

I'm not particularly impressed with the new seasons, though there's some decent stuff here and there in season 4, at least in the third arc. It's odd that they did such a superb job with season 1 but nothing since has reached the same level. At this point, it feels rather soap opera-esque, and there are so many characters that I have trouble keeping track.

But what happens when a mature woman appears, acting like a mature person in a position of leadership?

Well, we are told that this is BAD. AND EVIL.

Case in point:

no gif
Todo Shino
She is the head of the Earth Federation Forces Intelligence Bureau and also the younger sister of Minister Heikuro Todo.

Let's start with all the problems that are explained to us in detail.

She has CONSCIENTLY chosen not to have a family (I don't know how many times we are told this in all the episodes). This is BAD, because we are repeatedly told that having a family is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING IN THE UNIVERSE and is also a moral duty.

So some of her questionable choices are explained by the fact that she doesn't HAVE A FAMILY.

She has the highest position of power held by a woman that we have seen in the series (I mean among the earthlings, the aliens have queens, empresses or whatever). Let's say that between her and the woman immediately below in the hierarchical chain (a captain of an experimental ship who we are told got the position only through nepotism) there is an abyss.

And how is such a thing possible?!? Because she chose NOT TO HAVE A FAMILY, so her position is derived from a morally depraved choice, so is the role she holds.

In fact, all the women in the series, whatever role they have, immediately abandon it at the birth of a child to become full-time mothers.

Men can also be admirals, presidents or Masters of the Universe and be fathers at the same time. No problem for them.

And what has this abyss of depravity led to? THAT SHE IS A DIRTY TRAITOR, who sold the Earth to Desirium.

What else can you expect FROM A WOMAN WHO PREFERRED CAREER OVER FAMILY?!?

(There's basically a dialogue that goes like this: "Oh no, she betrayed us!!!", "Well we need to understand her, she doesn't have a family!" - I'm paraphrasing.)

I saw this post before I watched, so I was looking out for this character and the part where they brought this up, but I can't remember a single mention of any of this in the scenes where she appeared. There's no mention of it in her wiki entry either.

Still over two months from the next chapter release. Waiting to get some more meaty moments with the Bolar and see how the Galman-Gamilas Empire is settling while under seemingly constant attack from said Bolar.

Plus see if the Gamilas have come up with a counter to the Dezarium subspace tentacles.

Just a week or so more before we find out

Though I would think that would be later in the series as it take a bit for Arizona to catch up with Yamato.

I really hope we get a Yamato, Arizona team up this chapter.
We're only a bit past the halfway point for the 'Season' (26 eps.) with this chapter (eps. 11 - 14); and the Arizona had a cameo of sorts in Chapter 3 - so with the way SBY usually goes, if they bring in the Arizona, it won't be until Chapter 6 or the final Chapter 7.

We'll see.

That the Bolar fleet at Berth is featured at the start suggests to me that we will finally get to see more of their weapons. Legendra has a wider than normal Bolar Gun port on the bow and they show us that right at the start next to standard battleships. So this will be interesting.

Well chapter 4 is out now in Japan, just got to wait until Crunchyroll subs it. Hopefully that won't be too long.

Yeah, I really do have to agree with you there. With 2199 it felt they got pretty much everything exactly right. 2202/2205/3199 felt like a substantial drop in quality in terms of the writing. It feels like they're fixing issues with the original, while adding some more of their own making.

As for the female characters, 2199 got it just right, but then that was a different writer to 2202+. Yamato 2202 onwards is no where near as bad as the original, but then that's a low bar. That said, I feel Saki Todo is a decent female character, but the Ginga feels like a support unit in a RPG tactics game.

Ginga, the Flying Incubator.

I already wrote what I think about female representation in Yamato. I consider fan service a necessary evil. It's anime, after all. But all the sexism in Japan is duplicated in Yamato. The only two women in positions of power are a captain who got his position through nepotism (and still has to wear a tight latex catsuit) and a traitor to the human race (obviously unmarried and childless, to round out her crimes).

IDK - Overall SBY2202 was way better than the original. For me, the ending had issues, but given that they were still trying to be somewhat faithful to the orginal story; but yeah the whole "let's turn everything over to AI and become Cyborgs to survive, and just use females as incubators..." was a bit much.

The mecha and character pages have updated for Chapter 4. I image it will be out on Crunchyroll very soon.
The attitude toward women in Yamato strikes me as that of a 1950s person who believes himself to be enlightened and egalitarian. They aren't locked away in the kitchen, but they aren't on equal terms with men either.

Practically until 3199, we have never seen a woman among the top brass, (and the only one who appears is a traitor to humanity). Italy is not a particularly egalitarian country, but even we have more female pilots in the Air Force than the entire Cosmo Navy (which has ONE!). And even this one had to fight to be able to fly a plane. Isn't there a single female character who has an active role and is older than, I don't know, 20? The only one is the aforementioned traitor. Ginga has a female crew only because they are considered two-legged incubators. And by the way, the series is full of brave male soldiers fondly gazing at photos of their sons as they go off to battle. The only female characters who have had children have had to retire to be full-time mothers. The message is clear.

Dear Japan, we're in the 21st century. I know you have a major birth rate problem, but continuing to tell women, even in anime, that they're only valuable as reproductive beings won't solve it.
