BBC One repeating all the specials

Disappointed they went from Planet of the Dead straight to End of Time today. Why did they do that? Especially since they even showed the preview for it after PotD (which was actually much better than I remember).

BBCAmerica ran all of Tennant's specials last night
I thought The Next Doctor was okay, Planet of the Dead was interesting (of course Michelle Ryan makes anything interesting), Waters of Mars was great how it showed the Doctor's struggle with his nature to help, and not interfering with set events
and End of Time was just great :D
and now I can't wait to watch Smith's Doctor

^The BBC America marathon was great. I actually just starting watching the show off and on in December, as they replay an episode each day. I was sold from the beginning pretty much by David Tennant, though I didn't start DVR'ing anything until the beginning of the marathon on the 31st though to all of the Matt Smith stuff on the 1st. I took one of the gift cards I got on X-Max to load up on the the 2005-2009 seasons (since I saw all of 2010 on TV on the 1st/2nd) since Amazon VoD has them for 9.99 a season.

Great stuff. Now that SGU is cancelled, I'd be hurting for some good sci-fi right about now if it weren't for the good Doctor. I burned through Season 1 in a day, and am half-way through the 2nd season.

I'm actually tempted to look into the original series. I understand it's a different show, but am open so long as it isn't campy. I hate camp.

Yeah, well, um... ;)

Seriously, though: Everyone seems to mean something different by this word but it's quite possible the old show won't be to your liking or at least large parts of it. The black and white era didn't strike me as a campy but I guess some of the later Doctors' runs could fall into that category.

They both give you glimpses into the Classic Era. If anything in there looks "bad" to you, you may want to stick with the modern stuff. If it looks decent or interesting, then definitely come back to us and get some episode suggestions from the Old-School fans here.

No matter your choice or tastes, welcome aboard! :techman:

Nothing looked bad, per se, but it was all 1 second clips taken wholly out of context and put to really bad music. Perhaps I didn't define "camp" very well. It's not production values, I've seen the original Cybermen in photos. I can deal with that. I'm talking about story. Nothing too kiddy, which I guess means that it's taken seriously enough that they put effort into the writing and characters and tell something that's compelling.

So I guess what I'm looking for is a good sample. Amazon appears to have only a selection of the original series for download (damn big media pushing dusty old DVD sets). Maybe one of those?

I would say something like:

City of Death - Written by the late Douglas Adams and filmed on location in Paris.

Caves of Androzani - A very serious story, and usually voted by fans to be "The Best".

Talons of Weng-Chiang - Gothic Hammer-Horror style "fu-manchu" murder mystery. More of a period-piece, but also considered to be one of the Great Classics.

Genesis of the Daleks - It's all in the name, and is considered to be excellent overall.

Those are just a few that I would bet you could get into... :techman:

Be wary of those Amazon downloads. They only play on their player/downloader and you may or may not get the portable DL version to work on anything.

I tried to get the 4 parts of the Three Doctors with no luck and demanded a refund.

^^^ My Kung Fu is strong, my friend. Do not worry.

Here are some Amazon Download links for some of the episodes I mentioned...

Looks like they're not offering some of the other ones like City of Death. You could also try iTunes if you're just into the download scene and don't want to get anything on disc...

Thanks! The disc thing is more about money than anything. Downloads are usually at a distinct discount to physical media.
