Spoilers Batwoman - Season 1

I was able to watch the new episode on Showcase this past Sunday.

the local news is pretty much the only thing I watch live and leave the rest to the TiVo so was expecting it to be there for me to watch later.

and it is showing an episode for recording this Sunday night.

Batwoman
Season 1 - Episode 18 - "If You Believe in Me, I'll Believe in You"

Kate/BW/Luke: Organ harvesting...interesting change for this series roster of criminals.
Kate and Julia going on a clubbing mission--could do without the jealousy bit, as they work better based on their shared background (to all things Wayne) than anything else.

...and because Kate had to get some ass, Lucius' journal; was stolen. Luke had every right to be pissed at Kate's utter lack of responsibility.

As for Julia...she's working for someone else interested in the journal...

Tommy Elliot: So far, he's only of interest with what he knows about Lucius' journal (beyond the tech needed to pierce Batman's costume). He should have a greater advantage he can use to twist Alice's screws.

Jacob / Alice / Mouse:
Well, he tried to reach her with the truth, and it did not work. Not that he really expected Alice to do anything other than spit out her loony view of the world. Now that she's pretty much admitted she has revenge on her mind, he will have to make a decision, since he can expect she will eventually make her break from Arkham. I would like to see him drop all sympathy for her once she's back on the streets--a position he took at the midpoint of the season, but backed away from it.

Mary: Kate was right frim the start--Mary has no business being a part of the danger-filed Bat-team, and her so-called list of credits "proving" her worth were all examples of Mary needing to be saved by others. She's a needy drunk. The character continues to be the series' Unnecessary Burden, but to give her some sort of value, the showrunners hurt the series with Bad Plot Convenience 101--dreaming up some reason for this unskilled character to save the day....only she did not, since she stood there while BW and Julia did all of the work. ...and then the idiot tries to take selfie in the cave. That was pure BS, and the series' first serious misstep.

NOTES: As the season finale is just around the corner, things are (if spoilers are true) going to say...go south, and if that turns out to be true, someone should take a fall...

Next week--hmmm...

GRADE: B-

I was surprised by the bit about the guy pulling on the wig and almost pulling Batwoman's cowl off. In the comics, the wig was designed to break away from the cowl when pulled on -- that was part of the thinking behind using it in the first place, that opponents would try to pull on "her" hair only to have it break away and surprise them, a misdirect that would give her an edge.

It's odd, also, that the bad guys didn't try to take off her cowl when they captured her. There should've been a line explaining it, that the human trafficker was auctioning off the privilege of unmasking her to the highest bidder. Maybe there was but it was cut for time.

Thought the direction was sharper than normal. The opening sequence was early Arrow good.

The director was James Bamford, Arrow's stunt coordinator. Those long single-take fight sequences are his trademark. I knew it was him even before I saw his name in the credits.

Speaking of recognizable things, I usually don't notice fashion that much, but Mary's black dress with all the zippers is one I knew I'd seen before in some other production. I did a bit of research, and I found it's the "Sunburst Zip Dress by Alexander Wang," which I'd previously seen worn by Poppy Drayton's character Abigael in a recent episode of The CW's Charmed. It's pretty expensive (at least by my bargain-rack shopping standards), so I imagine Batwoman borrowed it from Charmed.

Maybe they figured it was rigged to give them 10000 volts...:)

Speculation: Julia's working for Bruce? I have no evidence for this. None.

A Pennyworth working for a Wayne?

Although from a scurrilous read on the tv show Pennyworth, Bruce and Kate may both be Alfred's children, and maybe Prince Edward the Earl of Wessex too.

She was a bit too "no one can know my secret" neck-snappy so it's more like she's working for season 1 Oliver...

How many time traveling blond kung fu lesbians can you fit into one universe?

I forgot about Mia Queen.

Which is a possibility.

35 year old Mia on the Waverider giving Julia missions.

My money is on Julia working for Safiyah, a BATWOMAN villain from the comics who has yet to appear on the TV series, although she's been name-checked at least one --- by Alice, as I recall

She was, and that'd be my serious guess as well. ;)

Not willingly most likely, maybe Alfred's a hostage or something.

I was thinking last night that I would like for them to take inspiration from Beware the Batman and have Julia and Tatsu be childhood besties. Really, I just want an excuse for more Rila.

I'd be happy to see Katana return to the Arrowverse, but I think it would be more likely to happen in Black Lightning, since that's the show that's drawing the most on Outsiders characters and continuity (BL, Markovia, Helga Jace, versions of Looker and Geo-Force, the Masters of Disaster).

It's all the same Earth now so she can do both :)

I'm not saying a Batwoman appearance is impossible, just that Black Lightning's makers are the ones already embracing Outsiders lore, so if there were a desire to bring Katana back, it'd more likely be on their end. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Halo show up there next season, though Metamorpho might be a bit of a reach.

In any case, I'm finding that the shows are doing a poor job of taking advantage of post-Crisis connections so far. Outside of the odd throwaway reference, they still stay in their own lanes rather than making use of the shared reality. I'm hoping that's just a consequence of the change happening in the middle of the season, when they already had their own story arcs underway and couldn't veer too heavily away from them. I'm hoping that when they plot out next season (whenever that might eventually happen), they'll take the time to develop storylines that make use of the new reality and feature more crossover elements.
