Battling apathy

I certainly hope that the current editor stays on the job long enough to accompany some projects from start to finish ( I doubt that that was the case with Costas.)

Yeah, I've been wondering if she was even there long enough to actually get anything started.

I believe that pretty much the entire announced 2011 schedule (everything from Indistinguishable from Magic in March '11 to Rise Like Lions in January '12) was developed on Jaime's watch. Remember, the whole thing was announced in Star Trek Magazine back in June, which was shortly after Jaime left for maternity leave, so the whole thing must've been worked out while she was there.

Damn, it's to bad she left then, she was setting up some really interesting stuff. Hopefully the new editor will continue that trend. Just out of curiosity, how long is something worked on before they make the official announcement?

Depends, since official announcements (when they happen) tend to be held until a time when they can be announced all at once -- at Shore Leave in past years and in the magazine this year (although unlike past years, this year authors were given leave to announce their own projects individually).

But generally, I gather, the schedule for an entire year is planned out all at once rather than month by month, which is how you can get the entire schedule through January 2012 announced in June 2010. I know that Jamie started work on the 2011 schedule around December '09, so I guess the preference is to be a year ahead of the game.

^ Oh, I think it's pretty universally agreed, as much as anything can be around here, that your prior two Voyager novels were the surprise hits of the 2009 schedule.

Aww...thanks.

Have any annoyingly nebulous hints to drop, or is that just David R. George III's territory?

Well...Spartan though it is, the blurb that accompanies the cover in the catalogue is accurate. Everyone who read Mere Mortals has seen the Children of the Storm but naturally there's a lot more to see. As I always intended, we're going fairly deep into fleshing out more of the fleet with this one, though Voyager and her crew remain at the heart of the story.

And I will also say that while in the past, writing the Paris family was always fun, writing about family once you actually have one is surprisingly fascinating. There's a lot that came through in this story that I just didn't know was true until I had my daughter. It was exhilerating to write and a happy coincidence that so much of the story, even beyond Tom, B'Elanna and Miral was thematically resonant with much of what I've been experiencing.

Otherwise, you'll just have to wait and see.

JD, Technobuilder and Bill...glad to hear you're looking forward to it. I hope it lives up to your expectations.

Best,
Kirsten
