Bats in Space

I'm curious about this, there's no sound in space right? So presumably their sonar wouldn't work, so would they just basically fly around bashing into things having no idea where they're going?

There's no sound, but there also isn't a whole lot of stuff either for them to run into. Not to mention the breathing/not freezing to death issue, and then of course you have to consider that without air, their wings wouldn't really be able to work either.

Bats + Space = Bad plan.

This is what I was thinking.

So...

Bats in a vacuum with no gravity - they'd be blind and would be able to use their wings so they'd probably be pretty freaked out right?

Bats in a vacuum with gravity - they'd be blind but could still fly. So would they just fly around not really knowing where they're going?

And bats in a non-vacuum with non-gravity could see where they're going but their wings would be of no use, so they could tell where they were but couldn't really do much about it?

I think in a vacuum they'd die...

Eventually, yes, assuming they could get sucked inside in the first place.

I think they'd just flap around madly, pushed against whatever attachment was on the end of the extension wand.

Anything that flies aerodynamically -- birds, insects, bats, aircraft -- can’t fly in a vacuum. The only way a bat could fly without air (assuming it didn’t need to breathe) would be reaction thrust from very powerful farts.

Flight in vacuum is always awesome. You're heading straight for the ground, no walls to hit, and you're not doing it at terminal velocity!

Never forget.

The lack of sonar would be the least of it's worries.

Nah, she had instructions from her superiors on getting inside the shuttle and infiltrating the station, and she safely reported back to the bat ground control after the shuttle docked.

It's a misconception that bats are blind. They still have eyes, and they can still see, so they won't end up bumping into things. They may be a bit confused as to why one of their senses isn't working right, but they won't be much worse off.

Well, they'd overheat before they freeze to death. A vacuum is an excellent insulator, which is why a popular type of drink bottle is based on the concept. The EVA suits worn by astronauts are more concerned with cooling than they are with heating the astronaut, also why when in orbit they opened the cargo-doors of the shuttle, to vent away heat.
