Batman: Year One...

Simplification doesn't have to mean making it look more like Timm's style. Fleischer managed something about 70 years ago one could take a look at for an example.

The Fleischer shorts had much big budgets on a per minute basis than the DCU movies if you adjust for inflation. The type of designs you see in the DCU movies, as well as in Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Young Justice, is what works best these days for getting fluid animation at the budgets these movies and shows operate on. Bruce Timm's style fits within that design range, although I wouldn't say the entire line uses his style. He hasn't done design work on the movies in a long time. The other designers have styles that have some similarities to Timm's, but they're not all peas in a pod. Anyway, I think you can clearly see the influence of Mazzucchelli's art in the animation designs, albeit in a simplified form.

Agreed.

Agreed as well. I think the influence is pretty obvious in the photos and trailer that has been released thus far.

Anyway, I am really looking forward to this. Batman: Year One is my favorite graphic novel, and one of my favorite Batman stories of all time. It looks like they are treating this with respect and will do it justice. I can't wait.

The animation is not meant to be a direct copy of the art in the book. It is meant to reflect the art work used in the book by the artist. This has been their policy with regards to animation in all of their DTV's so far. The previous films adaptions haven't been total copies of those artists work but close enough to honor their style. Also I think Ben Mackenzie's voice for Bruce is fine. He's meant to sound young. He's 25 years old in "Batman Year One". That's how he should sound.

As for an adaption of "The Killing Joke" you could extend and tweak an adaption of the story just as they did with Judd Winick's "Under the Red Hood". You could show scenes perhaps at the end of the story with Babs rehabilitation, determination, and struggle to become Oracle. There was an issue last year of Birds of Prey I think where Babs flashes back to her time in the hospital recovering and feeling depressed. Bruce comes in pissed off at her (sympathetic to the max still but using his tough love approach) and essentially growls at her to not let this defeat her to become something more than she is. It is a powerful panel that Gail Simone nailed. Frankly if they do an adaption of "The Killing Joke" they should get Gail to write the script because no one else in my opinion has done a better job writing Barbara Gordon in recent years than her.

I'm 25 myself and so are quite a few friends, you can have a mature imposing voice at any age past puberty basically. Listen to the kid playing Havok in First Class, or Chris Hemsworth, or any number of young actors with powerful voices. The strength in Conroy's performance was that his Batman voice sounded just as natural to him as his Bruce voice. No hissing scratchy cartoon villain mucking about like here and to some extent with Bale.

Again over thinking going on. This is "Batman Year One" not "Batman" whatever established story. Bruce hasn't perfected his deep growling voice in this story. Kevin Conroy's Batman voice was of an established Bruce Wayne who had years of training behind him and years of being Batman. I think you're being too hard on Ben personally but to each their own and frankly we barely heard him as Bruce or Batman in that teaser so I'm not sure how you could have possibly judged his voice that quickly.

The full details of Batman: Year One have been released. The prior release date supplied to World's Finest of September 27th turned out to be incorrect (or was later changed). The release date is now October 18th. For the first time we're getting both a Showcase short and a commentary track as part of the special features. The commentary track is by Alan Burnett, Sam Liu, Mike Carlin and Andrea Romano. The featurettes are:

“Heart of Vengeance: Returning Batman to His Roots”: “The Dark Knight Returns” provided the denouement of Batman's life. Frank Miller's next seminal work would provide his near-mythic origin in “Batman: Year One.” This documentary uncovers the contemporary genius of Miller and the audience that was poised to appreciate the depths of his work.
“Conversations with DC Comics”: The Batman creative team at DC Entertainment discusses the personal influence of “Batman: Year One” on their careers. Batman producer Michael Uslan leads the chat amongst well-known writers, editors and artists of the Batman lore, focusing their dialogue on the darker, realistic interpretation of Batman’s origins by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli.
The other special features are a sneak peak of Justice League: Doom, the first chapter the Batman: Year One digital comic, and two bonus episodes of Batman: The Animated Series.

Cool. And now that I know I can watch Blu-Ray's on my PS3 with no problem, I'll probably be getting it in that format. I'm actually just as excited for this as I am for any of the theatrical releases this year.

Do we have any idea yet what this Justice League: Doom thing is going to be about? I don't follow the comics very closely, but the title certainly doesn't sound familiar...

Bryan Cranston talks a little bit about his voice over work on this at the A.V. Club, although most of the interview is devoted to the upcoming season of Breaking Bad (avoid it like the plague if you haven't seen season three yet).

I had a thread on Justice League Doom when the announcement came down. As mentioned it's based on the Towel of Babel storyline by Mark Waid and it is Dwayne McDuffie's final script he wrote before his untimely death.

I was confused about those special features? Are they for BOTH Blu-Ray AND DVD or just Blu-Ray? The Audio commentary for "All Star Superman" was just for Blu-Ray. I suspect this is the case again which pisses me off.

^^^
The extras are just for the Blu-ray release. Sorry, I should have mentioned that. I always buy the Blu-ray release so it slipped my mind to note it.

New Direct to DVD Batman:Year One Animated Movie this October

According to the CBR site; there is going to be a Batman:Year One animated film. It's based on the Frank Miller graphic novel. The article states that Miller's Dark Knight Returns is next on the list for an animated movie adaptation.

Frank Miller's 1986 Dark Knight Returns got me reading Batman again after several years of not reading comics. I hope Bruce Timm adapts the movie faithfully. I was hoping for a live action film. However after the Dark Knight with Christian Bale, that's not likely.

As far as the Batman: Year One adaptation is concerned; it's about time. I'm hoping it's worth the $15 or $20 price tag.:)

I'm kind of surprised they haven't gotten around to it yet considering Jim Lee's influence within the company now and given that he was the artist. I'm not a big Tommy Elliot fan but it would be interesting to see animated.
