Batman: Year One...

I'm glad they are going back to adapting specific storyline into animation but I wish they would do it with some characters other than Batman & Superman. (Would still love to see that Judas Contract movie they talked about years ago).

Yeah, as good as Year One looks, the fact it's just the latest in a long line of Batman animated movies does diminish the appeal just a little for me.

At the very least, they could have him team up with another character like Green Arrow or Flash, to make it feel a bit different.

^ Except DC Animation already has a Batman team up cartoon. Yeah I understand what you mean but Mike Farley pointed out earlier in the thread DC now has a policy that they'll be concentrating on Superman and Batman mostly. There was an entire thread discussing these supposed changes a few months back and most fans were disgruntled about it.

I'm a huge Batman fan so I love that we're getting a continued focus on him. There has been talk about doing "The Dark Knight Returns" for next year (don't think that has been confirmed yet by DC Ent). I suspect that we'll get a full confirmation and possible previews for their 2012 slate at comic con.

I can't wait for this. There's a pretty good chance this will be the first time I've actually read the comic before the movie, if I'm able to get Year One in the next couple weeks like I plan too.

Batman Year One is arguably the best Batman story ever. Better, in my opinion, than Miller's more high profile Dark Knight Returns. Way better than The Killing Joke.

Killing Joke almost feels like more of a short story. I'm not sure how they would flesh it out to 90 minutes.

Anyway, loving the animation on Year One. I've been rewatching some of these movies, and when the animation looks cheap and simplistic, or doesn't capture the comic at all (as in New Frontier or All Star Superman), it can REALLY undermine the story being told.

So is the movie pretty close to the animation style used in the comic arc?

I've also been rematching them over the past few weeks, in fact I just watched Under the Red Hood Again today, and I've really liked the animation in them.

The art style isn't as close as they would like to claim, but it isn't bad at all. My only issue so far is with Ben Mackenzie's attempt at a Batman voice.

They get the designs as close as they can to the art in the comic books they're adapting, but they have to simplify things to get smooth animation. Some art styles are of course much harder than others to translate into animation.

Much more angular is the first thing that comes to mind. Mazzucchelli has a much more old-school comic style to his work, whereas this is much closer to stuff like The New Frontier or some of the other recent DC animated movies.

This isn't to say I don't like it (I do), or that they aren't doing a great job translating the Year One character designs to this style (they are), but to say they're emulating his art style is just not true.

...but to say they're emulating his art style is just not true.
I think that's overstating things. The animation designs are clearly based on his work in the comic. But the necessary simplification - particularly in decreasing the amount of line work - limits how closely they can emulate his art. They would need much bigger budgets to more closely emulate the art in some of the comic books they're adapting.
