Batman: The Killing Joke animated movie from Bruce Timm

I imagine the New 52-ness of the in-continuity DCUAO movies (we really need to think of a simpler term for those) will be reduced a bit following DC's Rebirth initiative.

There will probably be a version of "rebirth" in production soon.

I don't see why. Rebirth isn't a continuity reboot, just a new marketing phase and a reshuffling of titles and characters within the "New 52" continuity, the same way that the previous "DC You" initiative was.

Hm.... I'm not sure about the animation style. It's been years since I read the graphic novel, can't remember if this is very similar to the it or not. But right now, this looks a bit bland.

I think it looks great. The art is effective at adding to the overall feeling of discomfort that they're going for.

I wasn't expecting Bolland-level art, but that animation is barely a step up from shit that you'd see on Newgrounds.

And Hamill really, really can't do the Joker voice anymore, he needs to follow through on the promise -- that he's made multiple times -- that he's going to hang it up.

It sounded pretty good to me. And this is a more multilayered and thoughtful Joker than we usually get, so it's appropriate that it isn't exactly like the B:TAS Joker voice. It should give Hamill some interesting range to explore, especially in the flashbacks.

I guess I was more than happy with the work that John DiMaggio did in Under the Red Hood. Hamill has been saying for years now that he wants to stop doing the Joker because it wrecks his vocal cords, and it's showing -- those clips in the Killing Joke trailer were pretty weak, and while he was giving it his all in Arkham Knight, he just wasn't up to what he was able to do 25 years ago. And that's no criticism of Hamill; Conroy can't really do the difference between a Bruce / Batman voice anymore, either.

Between the weak voices and the janky animation, this is really feeling like something that was initiated by someone who grew up on The Killing Joke and wanted to see it in a movie format, much like many such nostalgia projects are.

Well, perhaps the motion comic I watched was edited, but that stuff happens "offscreen," so to speak. It's mentioned later, and the photos are shown to Commisioner Gordon at the carnival (with no nudity shown for Batgirl, and "007-in-Casino-Royale" nudity for Gordon), but it's something that is implied and not shown. But I haven't read the comic...I just saw the hourlong audio/visual comic on YouTube, so I don't know. I assumed it included all the pages and panels.

My point is THAT, to me anyway, would be pretty much PG-13 today. Since it's mostly left to the imagination and not shown explicitly. The producers did mention in the featurette that by the standards of today, they might sneak by with a PG-13. But maybe it's framed or interpreted differently in the actual film that makes it hit harder psychologically, enough for the MPAA to deem an R rating was warranted.

IMO, considering all the nauseating bloodshed that previous DC animated movies already got away with on a PG-13 rating, this R rating is rather surprising. :ack:

Honestly, I was expecting more from DiMaggio there than he delivered. He'd done such impressive work in other roles that my expectations were very high, and the reality was a bit of a letdown. Ditto with Michael Emerson as the Joker in The Dark Knight Returns. He does such fantastic work in Person of Interest that I was surprised at how much less rich his vocal performance was as the Joker.

The trailer is reminds me of the animation style of the Super-Friends. I get that somebody wants to do a stylized animation technique, but I'm not really convinced that it meshes with the seriousness of the story line. Only somebody like David Lynch or Tim Burton might be able to pull that off, I think.

Pile me in with the group that is disappointed with the vocal work and the animation style. Given the talent involved, I guess I was expecting a bit more. Alas.

I'll put money down that the jerkiness of the footage isn't in the movie itself, just that they slowed the shots down for the trailer. Mark my words. :)
