My question is if you are a devout catholic, or just a catholic who does go to church every week or whatever, and you saw this movie, what did you think? Does it make me a bad person for liking this movie? I know it might sound like a silly question, but it's something I keep on thinking about and when someone asks me how it was, I'm not sure if I really know how to respond.

No, you are not a bad person. You're just using the brain God gave you to recognise that He created us all equal, and that we are what and who we are for a reason. I can't say I care for the church's position on homosexuality either, but having a different view doesn't make one a hypocrite; it makes one a human being with an open mind who lives that whole commandment about love. Don't feel bad about that.

I haven't seen the movie and I don't know if I will or not - personally I think Heath Ledger is overrated (and I'm Australian ) - but the gay issue is not a factor in that decision at all. I just don't go to many movies at all any more.

I was thinking about starting a thread about this, but there was already one and I'm not sure how to ask it. I decided to give it a try in here and see what happens.

Anyway, today I went to go see the Movie Brokeback Mountain. I know it brought up the controversial issue of homosexuality, and I know that my church (Catholic) has a hard stance against it. However, despite the fact that I am catholic, I don't agree with the church's hard stance on it. Maybe it is a sin, and I don't live that life, but I am tolorant of those who do and say whatever makes you happy, go for it.

Anyway, not to get too far off topic, I went to see this movie today, and I liked it quite a bit. I don't think it was as good as Walk the Line, but that isn't the issue right now. Half way through, I totally forgot this movie was dealing with the homosexuality issue and looked at it as a love story, much like I looked at DS9's "Rejoined" the same way. My question is if you are a devout catholic, or just a catholic who does go to church every week or whatever, and you saw this movie, what did you think? Does it make me a bad person for liking this movie? I know it might sound like a silly question, but it's something I keep on thinking about and when someone asks me how it was, I'm not sure if I really know how to respond.

Well, back in the day, when i was still Catholic, i saw a little movie called Dogma. Yeah, the Church was really against that one too. I really enjoyed it and indeed, the movie, in my opinion, pointed a lot of flaws in the church's ... well ... dogma.

If you enjoyed it, why would it make you a bad person? That just goes to show that you are open to other ideas than what the church says is sacrosanct. :thumbsup:

I'm not a devout Catholic, but my stepmother comes from a huge Catholic family and I recall when I told her I wanted to see that movie, she most seriously stared at me like I'd just sprouted another head, stating emphatically that she would never go and see that movie.

However, she is not homophobic; she has known people who are homosexual and they do not bother her as people. It was like the idea of this being a movie was too much or something. And she and my father are self-proclaimed pro-choice, anti-death penalty, taxes-for-all liberals!

I must say it left me a little confused...

Yup, still around.

Anybody here watching American Idol this season? It's one of my favorite reality shows. I love having little sing-a-longs with the TV. In the privacy of my own room, of course. ;-)

I never watched ANY AmIdol until this season, and I have to admit the auditions are pretty entertaining. I doubt if I'll keep watching now that they're starting to winnow the pack down to the good singers. To me, it's a lot more fun watching the horrible ones, and the comments that follow, than the passable ones.

Yeah, the horrible ones are pretty funny. I'd recommend sticking with the good singers for at least a little while though and see how you like it. Especially towards the end, the good ones are quite good!
