Bar and Grill 4: The Conversation Pit

I spend most of my online time at Wordforge nowadays. But I still like to check in here occasionally.

How are y'all doing by the way? Vash, how's life? Been a while!

I'm one year away from being a fully licensed dentist!

Kind a funny that you mentioned root canals a few posts back... ;)

Oh, and just to keep this on topic, I finally finished my DS9 DVD collection and watched the whole series from beginning to end for really the first time.

It's so true that it only gets better and better each time!

What killed me about Season 6 and 7, among other things, was that it was way, way overplayed on syndication. I got very tired of watching the same episodes over and over. And I wanted to chuck the Doctor out the airlock most of Season 7. :scream:

My feelings exactly. Every single word.

Well, I'm very pleased that when you do come by, you swing in here and see us.

You are always very welcome here - you were very much a part of the 'good 'ole days' in this forum...and I am always happy to see folks from those times.

Please stop in to this thread whenever you can pull yourself away from Wordforge. I'm sure everyone would love to have you around again. :)

All this talk about Voy has driven the thread off track ... Less talk about painful memories. I don't have anything constructive to add at the moment, as my DVD collection contains just the first season (broke, and jobless college graduate) and I am without cable TV. Of course if you want to babble about the DS9 literary relaunch, I would be more then happy to indulge.

I think I just saw the best episode of the last Fall Season and it's a show I wasn't going to watch. Yeah, I've been watching Heroes, and Oh my God Episode 17 was amazing.

The thread lives! :D

Heroes is the best new show I've seen in years. I think only B5 and Farscape hooked me so completely in so short a span of time. It's hell having to wait a week for new episodes. :scream: Here's hoping it continues to be this impressive for as long as it's on the air.

I'll be good and not respond to the various remarks about Voyager. :p :D

Heroes is definitely a good show. Will it ever be a great show (on par with Farscape and DS9)? Well, I guess we'll know in a couple of years. :)

The relaunch was really good to start and still is to some extent, though I'm a little wary of the Mirror Universe stuff. The MU is to DS9 what the Borg is to Voyager... damnit, sorry. ;) It is true to some extent though, I think there's a danger of overusing the MU for storylines in DS9. Though that ship may have already sailed during the last couple seasons of the show.

But that didn't stop me from enjoying the recent MU trade paperbacks.

As for Heroes, I figured I would give it a shot at the start of the season but I really wasn't expecting it to turn out so well. Awesome show, I think it may be the first DVD set I've bought in a while.

Yeah...this is where I'm at also. Same ole thing around here - BEST SHOW EVER, blah, blah, blah. Firefly all over again. :p

It's a great show. But I am REALLY curious to see what will happen after the resolution of the initial crisis is a wrap.

It could continue to be great...or it could be another Desperate Housewives and jump the shark to wander aimlessly once the original story is a wrap.

Only time will tell.

I haven't read the MU stuff yet, I suppose I should. The next book keeps being pushed back though :(

I never got into Heroes, but I suppose that's because I never had time to watch TV during normal hours while at university. Apparently I should make an exception ;)

Well, thank you for that kinda spoiler. ;)

I am enjoying the ride now. Hopefully it will continue to be good, but right now, I'm loving it. Of course I loved BSG in it's first season and it's been getting progressivly worse so only time will tell.

Exactly. So far, very good - for mine, it's managed to live up to the hype, and that makes it a rarity. But whether it will continue to be this good is another matter entirely. As I said...here's hoping. :D

Alright, for the TV impaired ( I may have owned one and shelled out money to have cable, but it was rare that I found time to watch it in the evenings.) So can someone tell me what/why we liked/enjoyed Heroes?

How could it be a spoiler?

I am only on episode 15 myself so I HARDLY think I could spoil you. :p

However, you have to assume that at some point they are gonna resolve the story that consumed season 1, right?

Or do you think it can go on forever?

As of episode 15, they have about 2 weeks left before the big erm....'event' (which we learned about in episode ONE, so is hardly a spoiler - you can probably grab the fact that there is a big event out of watching the commercials alone :p )...and 7 episodes to go.

You do the math. :p

And once they wrap that story? Have they set up ANYTHING for afterward? Another story?

Not so far. At least not by episode 15.

THAT is what I'm talking about.

It could turn out to be another 24, where the season 1 storyline concluded, but they were still able to pump more adrenaline into the show and keep it good. Or it could be another Desperate Housewives...a show in which once season 1 was over and the storyline that drove season 1 was resolved, they had nowhere to go and the show disintegrated into just another nighttime soap.

As I said - TIME WILL TELL.

I love the show, but I am never one to jump on the BEST SHOW EVER bandwagon until well down the road: season 3 or 4. Or even later.

Well, for starters, the main characters - the 'Heros' - are all fairly likable...or at least interesting. Some we know more about than others - some are better developed than others. But none are poorly or inconsistenly written.

Second, the season 1 storyline is a good one. The whole season is driving toward the resolution of ONE storyline. There really are no others. This is a good thing because the show is very focused. But the risk, of course, is that it could come back to bite them in the ass once the season 1 storyline is resolved. Hopefully, they have something planned...but for the time being, I'm happy that the show is focused and fast-paced. In short, the show knows where it is going - or, at least until the season 1 storyline is resolved. There is very little in the way of meandering into boring pointless crap. They keep it moving.

These factors are fairly rare in a scifi show these days. And thus it's popularity on this board.

Just my 2 cents.

Oh, don't worry about that. They'll set something (or a few somethings) up. ;)

And that's all I'm going to say. (Maybe.)

Silence, Steven. :p

The characters are (mostly) fascinating, the overall arc is intriguing, a lot happens in each episode (so boredom isn't likely), and unlike Lost answers are provided on a regular basis (so you don't feel as though you're being jerked around waiting for answers that either don't arrive or turn out to be...not answers).

Mostly, it's the characters. :D

Time will indeed tell if it's going to rank up there with my own favourite shows. It's certainly off to a promising start, but I for one am not proclaiming it's the Greatest Show Ever And Everyone Must Watch Or They're Stupid (or whatever). I don't care for that attitude when I encounter it - it's ensured that I'm unlikely to watch at least two rather well-known shows again - so I'm not likely to inflict it on others.

Give it a go, mcmac. It can't hurt. ;)

You know what, I don't know why I put that there in terms of spoiler. I didn't see anything. My bad.

Yeah I'm on episode 20 right now. I guess at this point any plot point you give me would not be a spoiler.

^ No worries.

I haven't watched any further episodes yet. I have them sitting on TiVo, but I got caught up in The X-Files over the weekend.

Every time TiVo records an episode of that show, I end up pulling out my DVDs. It's incredible.

Like OZ, I am very leery of the whole BEST SHOW EVER thing that seems to go on around here with a fair degree of frequency - especially as it relates to fairly new shows that haven't even had a chance to sustain characters over the long haul.

IMO, that is a critical factor - and the most difficult part of a TV series. Not that the show and characters are good in seasons 1 and 2...but how interesting they are after 3 seasons...or 4.

THAT, to me, is the true test of a TV show.

Not the latest fad at TrekBBS.

I was really soured on Firefly for many months because of the attitude around here. I actively AVOIDED it, in fact, I was so annoyed with Browncoats and their attitude about the show. And I was most assuredly NOT the only one.

Eventually I finished watching it...but that BEST SHOW EVER after only 13 episodes thing was just absurd, in my mind.

The same thing happened to an extent with Battlestar Galactica (although I actually liked season 3 ALOT more than seasons 1 & 2, which I thought were boring, unless you were part of the Caprica Six target demographic :p )...and it is DEFINITELY happening with Heros.

It is interesting to me that many of the BEST SHOW EVER folks as relates to Heros at one time thought Firefly was the BEST SHOW EVER. Then they thought BSG was the BEST SHOW EVER. And now they think Heros is the BEST SHOW EVER.

This becomes rather annoying for some of us. Which is why I generally stay out of SFF.

For me, the fans of a show can almost ruin a show completely for me. I'm trying REALLY hard to not let Heros become another Firefly for me.

^ Then you should probably stay away from SF&F. ;) While I do think that Firefly was an extraordinary show that I absolutely loved, I just can't seriously consider it one of the best shows ever. Yes, it had a huge amount of potential, but that''s not enough. How on earth can it compare to shows like DS9 or Farscape that lasted for 4+ years. It just can't, I'm sorry.

The same goes for Heroes. Good show, maybe even great. But it just hasn't been around long enough. If it's this good for the next... three or so years, then I might consider mentioning it in the company of DS9 or 'scape. Until then, no way. :)
