Bar and Grill 4: The Conversation Pit

I can't consider Heroes the "Best Show Ever" yet because the series is still very early and only time will be the true test on whether or not the show holds up. I don't even consider BSG the best show ever, and look at how that show has drindled to the point where I feel like even though I'm a fan, I'm in a minority in that I'm glad the series in ending next year. It's starting to feel like it's overstayed it's welcome. However, I do consider Heroes a great show, and the best show I'm currently watching. That may change when Doctor Who comes back, but that doesn't mean Heroes will be anything less.

Yeah I'm also glad BSG is ending after S3. I've more or less enjoyed all three seasons so far, but it feels like it's running out of steam.

As for the third season of Doctor Who (no spoilers for S3). Well... I do have to admit that I really miss Rose but so far I've quite liked all the episodes of this season. :)

That's not good, since I really liked Rose and Martha has big shoes to fill. Tennant was able to do it since I really liked Eccleston, who I hope comes back to Heroes next season, and Season 2 was great, more or less.

Everyone and their dog is trying to get me to watch Heroes, which makes me want to clam up as well. It's like a reflex.

When I heard about the new BSG, I wasn't interested in watching it. Then someone asked me if I was going to watch it now that Star Trek was over (ENT had just ended), even though I quit watching long before then. I said no. Then Jammer started to review it, I saw his comments, found out that Ron Moore was behind it -- I didn't know this before -- and that's what got me to start watching.

I don't know. "THIS IS THE BEST SHOW EVER!!! YOU HAVE TO SEE IT!!!!!" doesn't work with me. I need to read a review that tells me why I ought to watch it.

What I'll probably end up doing is renting the DVD's at Blockbuster, when they're available.

[...] the latest fad at TrekBBS.

I was really soured on Firefly for many months because of the attitude around here. I actively AVOIDED it, in fact, I was so annoyed with Browncoats and their attitude about the show. And I was most assuredly NOT the only one.
No, you weren't. I'm another. Some of the attitudes that prevailed around here have ensured I won't be giving that series another go. Ditto nBSG, even though a number of posters I like and respect a great deal are fans. (Having said that, the fact neither show interested me in the slightest is the main reason I don't want to revisit them, but the attitudes don't help.) And frankly, the attitude of some (departed) DS9 fans on this board helped put me off that series, too - though that "damage" has been undone by the cool people who contribute to these threads and people like PKTG who worked so hard to discourage that attitude.

I really, really don't care for being told I'm in some way deficient simply because I don't happen to share someone's opinion of a TV show. There are any number of actual, important things to get worked up about in life. TV shows aren't one of them, however good they are. If someone doesn't like a show I like, it in no way diminishes my enjoyment of that show. To each their own. ;)

^ I knew that Firefly was one of the two shows to which you were referring to earlier, but i wasn't completely sure about the second one (although I thought it might be BSG).

I think I was fortunate in a way, because I missed alot of the hype about BSG in SFF. The Browncoats had already soured me on the SFF forums, and when BSG started, I wasn't even posting in there anymore - or even reading those forums, because I was SOOOOOO sick and tired of the Browncoats.

So my opinions about BSG were not in the least bit influenced by the prevailing opinions in SFF.

My understanding is that alot of people in SFF liked the first two seasons better than the third. But my opinion is exactly opposite.

The first two seasons (and PARTICULARLY the first season) were so chock full of Baltar/Six wet dream silliness that I almost stopped watching.

Thankfully, things have improved. And while I agree with Bigfoot about how they probably need to wrap it up by the end of season 4, I quite enjoyed season 3. Especially the arc that occurred during the first few episodes of season 3, which are on-par, IMO, with the great scifi episodes of all time like Severed Dreams and Into the Lion's Den.

And as you know, that's saying alot because Severed Dreams is probably my favorite scifi episode of all time.

But anyway, I kinda got sidetracked. :p

My solution to the problem of fans ruining shows is to not go into SFF anymore. It might not work for everyone...and I do miss posting about shows I enjoy.

But I was so soured on Firefly it was unreal. And I don't want that to happen with other shows.

For me, it's a trade-off. A steep price to pay...but there it is.

Instead, I talk about the stuff I like in here. :D

Sounds like a plan.

Speaking of shows I like, does anyone else that posts in here watch Entourage? I absolutely love that show. Jeremy Piven is a god (and I mean that in a totally heterosexual way). ;)

Yeah, my irritation with the over-the-top elements of the BSG crowd is much more recent. I haven't grumbled about it much until now. :D

I don't think I could abandon SF&F altogether, but I ought to get back to talking about stuff in this thread. Even if you people do lapse into DS9-speak from time to time. :p :D

^ Well, I did used to go into the grading threads for BSG and Doctor Who. And generally speaking, the Doctor Who forum seems like a genuinely nice place, and I might post there more often once we start getting eps again over here in the colonies. Or OTHER colony, anyway. :p

In BSG a major character died this past season, and I went in to post about that as I am of the firm opinion that no one is ever really dead in scifi and the fan drama was surprising given that fact.

And I also went in to SFF proper specifically to post in the Dresden Files thread a couple of times because I like that show.

But other than that, I stay out of there.

Way too much hero worship (he! )for my taste. :p

And we try to keep the DS9-speak down in this thread...but I guess sometimes it slips out. Zebra/stripes. That sort of thing.

I spend most of my online time at Wordforge nowadays. But I still like to check in here occasionally.

How are y'all doing by the way? Vash, how's life? Been a while!

I'm one year away from being a fully licensed dentist!

Kind a funny that you mentioned root canals a few posts back... ;)

Oh, and just to keep this on topic, I finally finished my DS9 DVD collection and watched the whole series from beginning to end for really the first time.

It's so true that it only gets better and better each time!

Well, I'm very pleased that when you do come by, you swing in here and see us.

You are always very welcome here - you were very much a part of the 'good 'ole days' in this forum...and I am always happy to see folks from those times.

Please stop in to this thread whenever you can pull yourself away from Wordforge. I'm sure everyone would love to have you around again. :)

Thanks Vash!

Sorry, I'll always think of you as Vash.

;)

So, you watch BSG too, huh? Great show. Definitely some similarities to DS9.

^ It's okay. You can still call me that. A few people still do around here, and I know how it is. For so long name changes weren't allowed.

And yeah, I watch BSG. I like it alot, in fact. :)

I generally try to give all scifi shows at least a chance. Right now, I am watching BSG, Doctor Who, The 4400, Heros, The Dresden Files and both flavors of Stargate.

However, I'm really glad SG-1 is ending - it needs to end before it becomes the Friends of the scifi world.

And I think BSG can go out on a high note if they wrap things up in season 4. I will miss the show afterward...but I'd rather a show go out on top than overstay it's welcome and become lame.

^ Oh...and by the way (and totally off-topic), I want to personally extend my condolences to you on the passing of one of the Wordforge gang.

Sad day for you guys...and for us here who remember him. :(

^Thanks. He was gruff, but a good guy.

I'm pretty excited to see what RDM has cooking for BSG Season 4.

I actually only just watched the whole series from start to finish a few weeks ago.

I'd heard cool things about the season 3 finale and finally broke down and rented all three seasons to see what I was missing!

And now we have to wait, like forever, for the new season?!

the season finale was so satisfying, I actually had that damned song stuck in my head for days!

Ohh - don't bring up that song again! It's just now gotten out of mine :D

*adds Heroes to the list of shows I should be watching had I access to cable*

Thanks very much, guys. I really appreciate it.

It was a very tough day, but I made it...and hopefully tomorrow I will feel better about things.

But tonight?

Not so much. :(
