Balanced Seasons?

I don't think anyone likes every single episode, and season 3 often gets a bad rap as being the "worse" season, but I have found that the ratio between episodes I like verses episodes I do not like is pretty consistent across each season.

Here is the ratio: episodes I like/number of episodes in a season.

Season 1: 24/30
Season 2: 20/26
Season 3: 19/24

I know this is all subjective, but I seem to feel the seasons are pretty balanced.

What is your ratio of episodes you like vs the number of episodes per season? Do you feel all the seasons are equal in quality?

Great post. My ratios are about the same as yours, which I think is pretty good for TOS. I also did a quick ratio check on the original Twilight Zone series. There are a few good episodes, lots of marginal ones and a few that stink to high heaven so TOS gets a good grade, in my opinion.

I agree with the Phillip J. Fry Ratio.

"79 episodes, about 30 good ones."

Since I've never seen them one after another in the proper order, my first impressions had nothing to do with which season the episode was in.

Either I like an episode or I don't. I don't really care which season it's from.

I'm firmly in the camp that overall Season 3 was the weakest in terms of script quality. Sure S1-2 had some bad episodes but several of those bad episodes are around the level of an ok S3 episode.

Wow. That's shockingly low. Even if one dislikes most of S3 it would be pretty hard for me to buy any real fan's list with less than 55 or 60 "good ones."

I've never counted, honestly. Maybe 1/2 to 2/3?

I really like the TOS movies (except TMP). I never get tired of watching them.

TNG and VOY are "my" Star Trek.

I find something to enjoy in any and every episode of TOS.

...except for "And the Children Shall Lead."

What? You didn't like seeing Melvin Belli in a dress, reading his lines from cue cards? :ack: Why didn't they just cast Jerry Lewis as the Gorgon?

Mine don't come out very balanced. On a simple thumbs up basis:

S1: 25/29, 86%
S2: 15/26, 58%
S3: 8/24, 33%

Still, that's 48 "good" (61%), quite a bit better than Fry's 30.

I can agree with that. There is not an episode I really hate. Even with "And the Children Shall Lead" I like the title of the episode, I like when Uhura see's herself old and when Gorgan deteriorates at the end.

You really don't like season 3 do you? What 8 episodes do you like?

The Enterprise Incident, Is There In Truth No Beauty, Spectre of the Gun, Day of the Dove, The Tholian Web, Wink of an Eye, Elaan of Troyius, Lights of Zetar. Most of the others I will still watch, probably largely from nostalgia, but I wouldn't call them "good."

Turnabout, Empath, Children Shall Lead, Plato's Stepchildren, Spock's Brain, LTBYLB, Mark of Gideon, Way to Eden I have to be really motivated to watch again.

But... they get ice cream! Finally, all those many stardates after Kevin Riley said nobody could have ice cream, they finally get some!

One thing I read a long time ago was that if a show (or episode, for that matter) had anything going for it at all, it would inspire people to write fanfic about it.

There is a lot of Spock/Zarabeth fanfic (based on "All Our Yesterdays"). Ann Crispin wrote two novels about that episode.

One of my own early fanfics was a parody of "Spock's Brain" (yes, I realize that episode was basically a parody in and of itself). Those dastardly women ran off with his ears!

Of the ones you like I don't care for Wink of an Eye. I love Lights of Zatar. Way to Eden is another favorite of mine.

Personally, I don't think in terms of good or bad. It's subjective anyway so I just think in terms of whether or not I like something.

There are a mixture of good and bad episodes in season 3, but I have to remember that TOS could have been cancelled after seasons 1 or 2. So, I'm glad S3 exists. I just wish there was a S4, S5, etc. etc.

It would have been great if they had the same number of seasons as TNG or VOY.

My criteria was, if I was watching the entire series do I have the urge to skip this episode.
S1: 28/29 - 96.5%
S2: 22/26 - 84.6%
S3: 20/24 - 83.3%

I would rate Season 3 Episode "The Empath" as the worst episode. It is a snoozefest! I can watch and enjoy pretty much every other episode, but it take effort to get through "The Empath."
