Badass Digest says new writers for Trek 3; studio aiming for the 50th.

But Orci and Kurtzman might also still be writers, I guess? Or perhaps not -- the title of the article says one thing, the second paragraph another. Either way, this sounds like a creative decision and not a studio mandate.

Excellent sources have revealed to me that the new writers for Star Trek 3 have been found, and as expected Bad Robot is hiring from within the ranks of past collaborators. Continuing with the first two films' tradition of having writing teams, the script for Trek 3 will be written by duo Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz. You know them as the guys who wrote the first Thor and who have a writing credit on X-Men: First Class. They also worked as writers and producers on Fringe, making them part of the Bad Robot family. They also have some Gene Roddenberry experience thanks to their work on the schlocky TV show Andromeda.*

Don't get too excited about certain writers taking their hands off the property - Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci are still on as writers. I heard that they were instrumental in making the decision about going after Stentz and Miller. What their day-to-day involvement moving forward will be I couldn't say.

Keep in mind this isn't a done deal, so it's possible that someone else could end up getting the gig. And there's no guarantee they're the final writers on the project. But as of right now it's Stentz and Miller's job to lose. And since Paramount wants this movie out in 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, expect work to begin on it ASAP.

The idea that they'd promote from within their own ranks seems plausible.

There's also some rumormongering in there that Abrams might quit Star Wars.

I saw this on Dark Horizons, which included the link to that story. I haven't seen it yet on any other website that Abrams was quitting Episode VII and going back to direct Trek III (or XIII). Can anyone verify this huge rumor?

Standing by to get excited, or be disappointed...

Re: Badass Digest says new writers for Trek 3; studio aiming for the 5

Seems like a lot of hot air to me. Let me know when there's an actual announcement from someone with a shred of credibility.

Re: Badass Digest says new writers for Trek 3; studio aiming for the 5

Paramount snubs Faraci on a couple of their premiers and now he resorts to this.

Classy.

Re: Badass Digest says new writers for Trek 3; studio aiming for the 5

It's a shame that this probably isn't true. I'd much prefer a Miller/Stentz sequel than another Orci/Kurtzman one. :(

Re: Badass Digest says new writers for Trek 3; studio aiming for the 5

And would be absolutely dumb to ask for anyone else to a 3rd film when all involved did just fine on one and two. No disputing that.

take that site with a grain of salt
I'll believe it only when an official announcement is made.

that said, if they choose other writers it's quite possible they are only handed the boring task to write the final script but the story and main ideas are still Orci&Kurtman's work.
It wouldn't be the first time and it would make sense since the duo has other scripts to write.

Basically this.

Orci & Kurtzman would still get story and executive producing credits while someone else gets credit for writing the screenplay based off their story.

Re: Badass Digest says new writers for Trek 3; studio aiming for the 5

The Abrams quitting rumor is just based on the fact that he wanted to film in the States, so he wouldn't have to be away from his family. He has said nothing about quitting the movie, and Disney has officially shot the rumor down. I highly doubt that he would turn down this opportunity just avoid spending six months or so in the UK.

I do hope for a 2016 release for Star Trek 3. My reasoning could be wrong, but isn't 2017 the real 50th anniversary? :) I mean, if the 1st anniversary was one year after the debut, in 1967, then yeah....

Re: Badass Digest says new writers for Trek 3; studio aiming for the 5

All rumours aside, Paramount would probably try for a late 2016 release for the anniversary. Whether that has any bearing on the films story at all is another matter.

September 8, 1966 was when TOS debuted on network TV in the United States ("The Man Trap" was the episode). So, 2016 is the 50th anniversary.

Not sure what to think if new writers are brought in. It did seem some of the most common criticisms of the last two movies by movie critics and posters on this board alike was the weakness of the script compared to the rest of the production (even some who liked the movie tended to point to the script as the weak part).

Frankly, I didn't have that problem with the scripts, but I'd be a fool to say that doesn't mean they can't be made even better. If a new lot can punch the next script up, then more power to them.

Re: Badass Digest says new writers for Trek 3; studio aiming for the 5

I thought the writing was excellent. But I enjoy new as well. But I just want Trek XIII to be worthy of the 50th Anniversary. Big and epic.

Re: Badass Digest says new writers for Trek 3; studio aiming for the 5

I would love if the could come up with a story that could intersperse some TOS footage into the new film for the 50th anniversary. Even if it was just during the teaser setup at the beginning of the movie.

Totally fanwankish, but the only way I could see this happening would be a Spock/Spock mind meld. Have NO idea how to work that into a story in a sensible fashion, though (that's why I don't pretend I can write better movies than professionals )

Re: Badass Digest says new writers for Trek 3; studio aiming for the 5

As long as David S. Goyer stays away from Star Trek in any form, I'll be content.

They could use space shots of the Enterprise from TOS-R, modified to imply it was a small largely unmanned test ship for the class.
